Located in Central California just two hours away from both Los Angeles and the Sequoia National Park lives Bakersfield, CA, in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley. Named one of the 12 Most Affordable Places to Live in California in 2024, Bakersfield offers small-town charm alongside a rich agricultural landscape, making it the perfect spot for both fresh produce and strong community spirit. With year round sunshine, Bakersfield is a truly ideal place to live – especially those who love the outdoors. However, if you’re unsure what activities to do in Bakersfield this fall, we’ve compiled a list for you to have the perfect autumn day. So, whether you’ve lived in Bakersfield your whole life, just signed the lease on a rental home, or are considering moving into an apartment in Bakersfield, you’re sure to find something in this article to pique your interest.
In our opinion, the best way to start your fall day is with brunch! One of our favorite Bakersfield’s spots is none other than Huevo House. This locally owned joint crafts both American and Mexican favorites with the freshest of ingredients. Not only do they serve up delicious food, but their “vibrant and quirky atmosphere is perfect for friends, families and colleagues to connect over a delicious meal,” they note. They especially pride themselves on “exceptional service and celebrating the spirit of Bakersfield and its wonderful community.”
For the main part of the day, we’ve put together four fabulous ideas for your autumnal afternoon. Whether your vibe is a quintessential fall activity, more creative and sentimental, or chill and boozy, we’ve got you covered.
Pick a pumpkin
A farm is an ideal way to spend an autumnal afternoon, and Bakersfield has several to choose from! When you think of fall, you often think of picking pumpkins, fresh apple cider, and corn mazes, which is why we recommend stopping by a local farm to get your fall fix.
Our first farm recommendation is The Big Red Barn (Murray Family Farms) located to the southwest of Bakersfield. This place offers tractor rides, a sunflower maze (if you’ve already been-there-done-that with the corn one), a farmers market, opportunities to meet friendly farm animals (along with rare birds and their collection of roosters), and more.
Another great option is Cherry Acres for their exceptional pumpkin patch and other fall favorites. Right on the outskirts of Bakersfield, this year the farm is hosting special events like a spooky paint night, goat yoga, and harvest pageant just to name a few.
Whether you’re looking for a cute date night, fun family outing, or just want to experience the fall vibes by yourself, we’d be remiss to not recommend such a classic autumn activity.
Smile for the camera
For a more unique fall activity, how about a photoshoot? Bakersfield is home to several amazing photographers, but Aspen Dawn Photo is truly the best. Photographer Aspen Rader specializes in storytelling and candid family photography as she values authentic emotion over a “perfect post.” Fall in Bakersfield makes the perfect photoshoot backdrop given the colorful changing leaves (well as much as they do, it’s still California), so why not get dressed up and have some fun? These photos can be used for your future holiday cards, posted on social media to announce and celebrate the move, or to hang up on the walls of your new home in Bakersfield. After all, “moving to a new place is a huge step in your journey and deserves to be remembered,” says Aspen.

Have a spooky adventure
If you’re looking for a spookier activity, we suggest Scare Valley for the ultimate Halloween adventure. They offer a plethora of activities such as hayrides, bounce houses, and even have a pumpkin patch. Each year they unveil a brand-new themed haunted house attraction that is both safe and thrilling! Perfect for all ages, Scare Valley is the perfect way to celebrate Halloween this season.
Taste local wine
If haunted attractions aren’t your speed and autumn means wine for you, look no further than San Rucci Winery. Their focus is on Italian inspired wines made from California grown grapes, and they work with some of the best local vineyards. As Bakersfield’s first and only urban winery, we especially recommend grabbing your friends, 21+ family members, or heading solo for a wine tasting. “At our tasting room, we offer wine tastings along with wines by the glass and bottles to go, wine centric events, and private event rentals of the winery,” describes winemaker Anthony Merz.

Regardless of the activity you chose, it’s time for an afternoon treat! Of course you could always pop by a cafe to caffeinate up, but at least look at our two options below.
Scream for ice cream
Fall in California still means warm weather which also means ice cream. Sweet Fix Creamery has some of the best in Bakersfield with their scoops of handcrafted and all-natural ice cream. They pride themselves on making the treat in small batches with both grass-grazed dairy and real, fresh, and locally sourced ingredients. At Sweet Fix, “we elevate classic ice cream flavors and create unique flavors inspired by our community and our own curiosities,” explains co-owner Kate Nykamp. So, not only do they make a delicious dessert, but they are also “community-centered and aspire to bring people together with our delicious ice cream,” notes Kate. If you’re looking for a sweet little treat, this spot is a Bakersfield’s must.
Sip a cold brew
If your idea of a treat is an alcoholic bevy, Temblor Brewing Co. is your place. This locally owned microbrewery, gastropub, and event venue serves up high quality craft beer, cocktails, and food daily. They also host exciting weekly events like comedy shows, game nights, and trivia which are all great ways to connect with the local community. Madi Caballero, Temblor’s marketing and events director, especially recommends following their social for news on upcoming beers, food specials, and of course the latest events.
After your snack break, we suggest taking a walk before dinner! There are several cute areas in Bakersfield to check out, but if you can’t decide we’ve outlined our two favorites for you to peruse.
Roam Downtown Bakersfield
If you’re unsure where to go, downtown Bakersfield is a classic. Known for its historic architecture and vibrant arts scene, it’s a great place to explore around before dinner. Whether you’ve walked through several times or this is your first, it’s always a good time taking in the rich history alongside the museums, cafes, and new boutiques. We recommend starting at the famous Fox Theatre and going from there.
Wander around River Walk
For more outdoors-y individuals, River Walk is for sure your spot! Between the walking trail near Kern River or just a stroll through The Park at River Walk, this spot is the perfect place to talk, sight see, and just enjoy a beautiful California fall.
After your walk, you’ve likely worked up an appetite, so it’s time for dinner. May we suggest Italian cuisine? Because we know a great spot… and it’s Luigi’s Restaurant and Delicatessen! This family-owned and operated establishment has been open for over 114 years due to their incredible food and friendly ambiance. “Known for being the place ‘Where Friends Meet’, the restaurant provides a welcoming atmosphere that reflects its long-standing local heritage,” says social media manager Giovanna Sacco.
