About Tuolumne County
Tuolumne County was named for the tribal word talmalamne, which means “people who live in caves” the county is one of the original 27 of California. The county was founded in 1850 and is known for its role in the California Gold Rush. Numerous Chinese prospectors who came in search of fortune resided in the area. Today, the township of Chinese Camp is named after those prospectors. At one point, over 5,000 natives of China lived in Chinese camps.
Residents back then established several Chinese temples, some of which still stand today. Chinese culture’s influence is on full display with the local elementary school designed in the style of a Chinese Pagoda.
With cool winters and hot summers, Tuolumne County has no shortage of activities. Sonora, the county seat of Tuolumne, is located incredibly close to Yosemite National Park. In addition to the natural exploration that comes with the national park, incredible hiking, climbing, biking, and rafting can be done at Yosemite. Sonora is also close to Railtown 1897 State Historic Park, a heritage railway.
