I spent a couple hours this morning performing what ought to have been a simple home-maintenance task. The light fixture on our front porch had gone faulty, and I needed to replace it. I’ve done enough wiring projects now that the electrical aspect of the job didn’t bother me. But the woodworking? That was frustrating.
As I fumbled with the jigsaw (“Drat! Another blade bent!”), I wished again that I practiced woodworking more often. I have several friends who do so, and the skills they’ve learned help them to save money around the house. My incompetence this morning gave me plenty of time to reflect on the value of productive hobbies.
Productive hobbies When I was younger, I spent most of my spare time reading comic books and playing video games. There’s nothing wrong with a little self-indulgence, but the older I get, the more I appreciate hobbies that provide practical skills. Productive pastimes are not only fulfilling, but they can also help save money. (Sometimes they can even generate a little income!)
Here are a few hobbies and pastimes that can help to save (or make) money:
Gardening. Kris and I aren’t yet finished with our year-long garden project, but already we know that it has saved us money. (Find out just how much when we post an update this Saturday.) Even if it did cost a little more, it’s fantastic to have fresh food just feet from the front door. You don’t need a lot of space to start a garden. Consider square-foot gardening or container gardening.
Photography. Cameras can be a money sink, but photography doesn’t have to be expensive. You can have a lot of fun with a cheap point-and-shoot digital camera. With practice, you may even be able to make money selling digital photos online. I know several people who do this (and I’ve done it myself).
Woodworking. Carpentry is another hobby that can consume a lot of cash. But if you have the space and the time, you can also develop skills that yield big dividends in the long run. If I’d taken the time to learn woodworking, I wouldn’t have to pay a contractor to do some of our remodeling projects. (And I wouldn’t have cut a four-inch hole this morning when I only needed a three-inch hole.)
Knitting. As with many hobbies, knitting can be expensive, but there are ways to make it less so. Nell at Octopus Knits has pattern companies and yarn folks giving her product (yarns & patterns) to try. Some of my friends have taken commissioned projects. Kris is learning to knit adorable little stuffed animals; she could sell them for $20 a pop.
Computer repair. Because I’ve always been a computer hobbyist, I’m able to troubleshoot computer problems instead of paying somebody to do it for me. Before I turned Mac, I also saved money by building my own machines. In fact, for a couple years, I supplemented my regular salary by helping friends and family with their computer problems.
Art. Last week, I pointed to the work of lillyella, whose art generates enough income through her Etsy store that she now does it full time. In the past, I’ve also mentioned Ayla, a teenager who sells her art glass at the local farmers market. Kris has a friend who is learning how to work with stained glass, but just for fun.
Cooking. My friend Laura has a group of friends that love to cook. They recently organized a cooking evening to provide freezer meals for each of them. They decided on six menus, assigned the shopping, borrowed a church’s kitchen, divided duties like cutting, slicing, dicing, mixing, frying, cleaning, split the costs and each went home with six different items for future use. But even learning to cook for your own family can save you a lot of money.
Baking. Baking is fun for its own sake, but it can also save you money with gifts. Who wouldn’t rather have a couple dozen home-baked cookies than another useless mug? Some people can even turn this skill into a career. My aunt turned a baking hobby into a business, creating cakes and catering weddings. She provided jobs for several other family members, too!
Canning. Though Kris has always enjoyed canning, this summer has been amazing. She’s discovered it’s a hobby she truly loves. She derives immense satisfaction from preserving her own food. “It’s comforting to walk into the pantry and know that I made all of this,” she said recently. “I know where the food came from, and I know that we’ll be eating it all winter.” Though the start-up costs are a little high, they repay a hobbyist in time.
Making music. My friend Michael has a musician friend who plays the piano and has been paid to play at private events. He has another friend with a great voice. This man loves to sing, and he and his friends hire themselves out as a quartet around Valentines Day and to sing Christmas carols during the holidays. (I’m always jealous of my musical friends. I know it’s hard work to become proficient, but it looks like such a fun way to stay entertained.)
Vehicle maintenance. I know little about cars. I wish I knew more. Knowing even basic vehicle maintenance can save you big bucks. I once knew a guy who performed nearly all his own auto work. He could buy a junker car, fix it up, and resell it at a nice profit. He wasn’t going to get rich doing this, but he enjoyed the hobby, and it kept him in money for his own vehicle.
Physical fitness. You’ll never get rich running road races, but there’s no question that a healthy body can save you money. Find a physical activity you enjoy: biking, running, hiking, dancing, yoga, weightlifting. Play a team sport. Regular exercise can be fun, but it will also save you money in the long run.
The possibilities are limitless. There are countless fun and interesting hobbies that can either save you money, or maybe help you earn a little on the side.
Quick tips You’ll notice that none of these hobbies involve collecting. I’m an inveterate collector myself (comics, books, notebooks, movie serials, music of the 1920s, …), so I know first-hand how expensive it can be. Some would argue that it’s a form of compulsive spending, and I can’t really disagree. Since I’ve begun focusing on hobbies that involve doing rather than getting, I’ve spent much less money.
For some hobbies, equipment can be prohibitively expensive. In these cases, you may be able to find used stuff on Freecycle or Craigslist, or you may be able to begin with low-end gear. (This isn’t always a good option. If you think you’re going to be doing a lot of running, you should buy a quality running shoe from an expert, and not settle for cheap sneakers, for example.)
In many cases, it’s possible to jump-start a hobby by taking a course at a community college or community school. I spent a year taking photography classes, for example. The instruction and experience were invaluable, and helped me develop the skills necessary to actually sell a couple photos.
My friend Michael likes woodworking but can’t afford (and doesn’t have space for) all of the equipment. When he needs to build something, he signs up for a community college woodworking course so that he can use industrial woodworking tools at a reasonable cost.
Further reading I’m a big fan of productive hobbies, and I’m not the only one! Here are some articles on the subject from around the web:
Don’t forget that hobbies are an excellent way to make gifts for less than it costs to buy them. Kris sometimes knits gifts for special occasions. Most years she gives some sort of home-made food to our friends for Christmas. I sometimes give photographs. One of the best birthday gifts I ever received was a batch of homemade chocolate chip cookies.
Not every apartment community will let you have a grill, but if they do, how do you pick the right one?
Grilling is a great way to prepare delicious and easy meals for everyone from big groups or just you and your roommate. However, you can only have a grill in your apartment if your lease allows it. So, after checking you have the green light, it’s time to think about what type of grill you want.
There are certain features to consider like size, portability, cost and whether you’ll use propane or charcoal. There are even electric grills if grill safety is a major concern.
Don’t stress over this decision though. These suggestions should get you thinking in the right direction, so you’ll be out grilling up something wonderful in no time.
Propane (gas) grills
Using a propane tank you can easily get at the grocery store, hardware store or even some gas stations, these grills are well-liked because of their ability to apply consistent heat. You can more easily maintain a constant temperature, and the grill will heat evenly.
1. Char-Broil Performance Series 2-Burner Grill
Designed for the busy chef, who doesn’t want a propane tank hanging out on their balcony, this grill comes complete with an underside cabinet for the gas and two metal side shelves. The shelves fold down when you’re not using them, but make a great place to keep grilling tools and that big platter to hold all the food while you’re cooking. Even with its compact size, you’ve got enough space on here to cook up to 16 burgers.
2. Fuego Element F21C
When you need a gas grill with a small footprint, this is your guy. About the width of the propane tank that’s hiding in its cabinet below, this grill gives you a smaller, rotund cooking surface. It may feel smaller than more traditionally styled gas grills, but you can still get enough food for four people on here. And, it looks really cool.
3. Weber Spirit II E-210
This grill is a favorite among many apartment dwellers. Its two burners provide enough surface area to cook a lot of food, and the two collapsable shelves provide extra prep space right beside the grill. With a tool holder and warming rack, it’s a complete package. The base model does not have a propane tank storage cabinet, but if you can pay a little more, you can hide it away underneath.
Charcoal grills
The biggest argument for those who are Team Charcoal, when it comes to grills, is taste. For them, the best grills for apartments, or anywhere, add that smoky flavor to all food prepared on them. It’s also easier to find charcoal grills that are small and compact, perfect for an apartment dweller who’s allowed to have one.
4. Weber Original Kettle Charcoal Grill
When you picture yourself grilling over hot coals, you most likely imagine yourself standing beside a kettle grill. This shape is indicative of some of the best grills for apartments whether you’re cooking on a balcony or up on the roof. It’s easy to move and doesn’t take up a lot of space. With a small drum, it’s also easy to clean.
5. Kamodo Joe Portable Charcoal Grill
Another grill with high portability, this little guy looks like a Big Green Egg, only it’s red. Made with cast iron accents, this grill has nice thick walls that help lock in smoke and keep your food moist while it cooks. Complete with its own stand, you can easily bring this grill out from the corner of your balcony to make it the centerpiece of your al fresco barbecue.
Another kettle grill, but with a hinged lid, this is a bit of an upgrade from the traditional design. The lid stays attached when you pop it open to check in your food. You don’t have to hold it while you flip those burgers or worry about setting it down while it’s hot. The TRU-Infrared technology helps prevents charcoal flare-ups and maintains an even heat.
Electric grills
For those who struggle with having a grill and following the rules on your lease, consider an electric option. You may need to run an extension cord out to your balcony, but there’s no charcoal flame or smoke to worry about and no flammable gas in use. Electric grills are also a healthier way to cook since they don’t produce carcinogens that can get into the food.
Another benefit is the variety of sizes this particular type of grill comes in. You can get a tiny one that sits on your counter or a larger set-up that will look great outdoors. They’re easy to use, heat up fast and often cost less, but the flavor will definitely be different.
7. Char-Broil TRU-Infrared Patio Bistro Electric Grill
Looking like any outdoor grill, with an easy-to-move base and rounded cook space, this fire-engine-red grill simply needs to get plugged into power. With a small footprint, this easy-to-clean electric grill has rust-resistant cooking grates and heating technology that makes for more evenly cooked food. Flipping open the lid, the only way to tell you’re not working with a traditional grill is to look under the grate. There, you’ll see a heating element that looks more like an electric stove burner than anything else.
How to decide which grill is right for you
Assuming you have no restrictions on what type of grill you use, it really all comes down to taste. Each type of grill will produce food with its own flavor. If you want food with a smokier flavor, charcoal has you covered. If you want moist food with deep grill marks, go for propane. Food cooked on gas grills will still have that outside char that only comes from this particular style of cooking.
If you want to cook outside, but it’s okay if what you eat tastes more like it came from the oven or stove, electric works. They’re also great for preparing a grilled meal indoors. You’ll still know you’re eating grilled food, but the fully developed flavor just won’t be there.
If you do have grilling restrictions, make sure you talk to your landlord. Even if you’re within the rules of the lease to use an electric grill, get approval for the type you want. Sometimes, landlords won’t allow electric grills that look too much like a traditional grill, at the risk of confusing other tenants into thinking they can have any kind of grill they want.
It’s grilling time
You’ve done your research and reviewed your lease. There’s nothing left to do but transform your balcony or rooftop into a happening outdoor party, complete with deliciously grilled food. Enjoy!

Getting ahead of holiday shopping can be a little overwhelming. The lists get long. The stores get crowded. Time gets short. And does Dad really need another pair of socks or a men’s nail trimming kit yet again? I don’t think so. So this year, I’m taking a more creative approach. Now that I’ve got a little one, he’s the gift-for-grandparents jackpot. Never being one to do much in the DIY department, when it comes to creating personal gifts, it can be hard to know where to start. Thankfully, the internet has given rise to professionals who can figure these things out for you.
Enter Mpix. Having just returned from our Hawaiian vacation, what better way to capture those memories than to get them off my phone and turned into something tangible? Mpix is a professional photography lab that’s been family owned and operated in the heart of the mid-west for 75 years. Now they offer their photography printing services to the masses in the form of cards, home decor, gifts and photobooks.
This is a DIY novice’s dream come true. I could quickly upload images to the Mpix secure photo gallery, select from a variety of pre-designed book layouts, et voila; grandparent holiday gift gold. It didn’t take me long to figure out their online editing tools. There were a couple of images that printed across the fold so you’ll want to triple check your placements. But with easy zoom and cropping, you can find the perfect spot for each image.
The best part? The books ship to you in 24-48 hours. I’ve never gotten a photo print product back that quickly. Perfect for my last-second tendencies.
With most of our lives being captured electronically these days, it’s interesting to think about our kids growing up without having pictures to flip through. But it’s by looking through photos and telling (and retelling and retelling) stories that help children cement their memories. Now that I know it’s so easy to create keepsakes like this, I think I might start my own photo album collection. No glue sticks necessary.

You dutifully filed your taxes by April 15th, and now you’re waiting for Uncle Sam to deposit that extra cash into your account. While it may seem like a license to splurge on that new pair of shoes or a trip to your city’s hottest new restaurant, do yourself a favor and think smart when it comes to your tax return refund.
How Many Americans Are Getting a Tax Refund?
According to The Motley Fool website, about half of all Americans will receive a refund in 2017. The highest percentage of those lucky guys and gals fall into the Millennial category, with 66% of those who filed seeing some cash coming back their way. Approximately half (49%) of the Generation X category of taxpayers will get a refund. Unsurprisingly, as your age category goes up, you’re less likely to see money back from the government: only 34% of Baby Boomers will get a refund.
How Do Most Americans Spend Their Refund?
While you might think a windfall from your return is a cause for most people to splurge, today’s economy says different. Bankrate.com, who’s been studying the tax return spending habits of Americans since 2010, says their research shows only 6% of U.S. adults who are getting some money back from the IRS are planning a vacation or shopping spree. Instead, the highest rate of Americans since the study began are planning on spending it on things they need, such as bills or food. Additionally, 34% plan to save or invest it, while 27% will use it to pay off some of their debt.
What Should I Do With My Tax Refund?
Here’s some unique ideas of what you can do with that tax refund, other than reworking your wardrobe:
Start an Emergency Fund. Unexpected car repairs, getting laid off from your job or even medical bills can jump out at any time. Having a cushion can be crucial.
Invest in Your Retirement. OK, we know it’s not the sexiest thing you can do with your money, but you’ll appreciate it in the long run.
Increase Your Education. Learn more about a hobby you love or more skills for the job you want to move into. Knowledge is power.
Donate to a Charity. Give some money to a cause you love. Even a small amount helps.
Upgrade Your Apartment. Need more space? How about just giving your current apartment a new look? That return can make that possible.
Change the Way You Eat. If you have a pantry full of ramen noodles and stale tortilla chips, now’s your chance to invest in the good stuff. Maybe even take a cooking class?
Pay Off Those Credit Cards. Start with the high interest ones and work your way down. Your monthly budget will appreciate it.
Take Some Time Off. Take unused vacation days and go somewhere you’ve always wanted to. You’ll be more rested and more productive upon your return.

Correction: Being a homeowner who wants to tear out and replace everything in the house is expensive.
But my home is also my hobby. It’s one of those expenses that falls into the “needs list” (shelter)and the “wants list” (my complete kitchen remodel). Living in aesthetically pleasing surroundings puts me at ease almost as much as a really mean massage, the kind where they throw elbows.
So, possibly you don’t identify with that. Possibly you totally understand where I’m coming from. Either way, I had a situation, and I needed a frugal solution.
Here’s the deal: My three ceiling fans were ugly as all get-out. And I had to look at one of them every morning when I woke up and every evening before I fell asleep — and all day long while I worked.
But I didn’t want to buy three new fans. For one thing, the fans I have are made by a good brand and they work well. They’re also in great condition. So I certainly didn’t want to replace three perfectly functional fans with cheaper models.
But I also didn’t want to spend the money on three high-quality fans purely for aesthetic reasons. For instance, I liked this fan from Restoration Hardware, but it was $329. So let’s do the math:
3 fans x $329 per fan = Not gonna happen!
I have a long list of house projects that I’d rather spend that money on, and ceiling fans aren’t at the top of that list. So I continued to glare at these fans, trying to figure out what to do with them. Leave them alone and just replace the fans later? Give them an Extreme Fan Makeover?
I decided that they couldn’t look any worse, so a makeover it was.
The Plan
Using the Restoration Hardware fan as a guide, I came up with a game plan to transform my ceiling fans.
I saw that the blades were lighter on the other side, so one thing I wanted to do was flip them to the lighter side. Then, to address the lights, I found a low-profile ceiling fan light kit at Lowe’s for $50, and paid for it with a Christmas gift card. (Thanks, Aunt Susan!) By the way, I recently saw simple light kits for as low as $20. Then I bought a can of Valspar Metallic spray paint ($6), and I was ready to get started.
(Note: I forgot to take a “before” picture of the ceiling fan I worked on, but since I have three of these bad boys, I snapped a pic of one of the other fans.)
How to give your ceiling fan an overhaul
If you’re interested in doing something similar, here’s how I executed the plan.
First, I cut the electricity to the master bedroom, cause I really didn’t want to end up like this guy. The expert at Lowe’s said, “Turn electricity off at the fuse box, check to make sure it’s off with a voltage tester, and flip the wall switch in the room to the off position. If in doubt, you can always hire an electrician.”
Next, I got a ladder and a husband. It doesn’t have to be a husband, but it helps to have a second pair of hands. Fans aren’t all that heavy, but they are unwieldy. Another tip from Lowe’s Fan Expert Guy: “If you can, remove the fan blades before taking down the fan unit and put them back on after reinstalling it. It makes it a lot easier to handle the fan.” Unfortunately, that wasn’t possible for us, so while my husband unscrewed the screws (I couldn’t reach!), I held onto the fan.
Although the fan base was no longer attached to the ceiling, the wires were still attached. So we disconnected those, being careful to not let the fan hang by the wires.
Then we took the fan into the garage and started figuring out how to take the entire thing apart. First, we removed the old light kit and set it aside. From there, we continued taking the fan apart until it was in a whole bunch of pieces. Don’t be intimidated by my handyman jargon, guys. The inside of the fan was full of dust (gross!) so we cleaned every piece and took the metal parts outside. I also opened the new light kit and took the metal rim outside.
We placed all of the metal parts on a large piece of cardboard, and I used painter’s tape and an old t-shirt to wrap parts like the motor and wires — things that should not be painted.
Then I spray-painted the metal pieces with two thin and even coats of Valspar Metallic in Brushed Nickel.
After the pieces were dry, we brought them back into the garage. We started to reassemble the fan, with the lighter side of the blades facing down and with the new light kit.
Then we carried the fan back into the master bedroom, and I held it up while my taller half locked it in place, hooked up the wires, and put the screws back in.
Then it was the moment of truth. We flipped the breaker, flipped the light switch, and violÃ! We had light, we had a fan. Thank goodness, too, because if it didn’t work, we probably would’ve had to take the stupid thing down again!
Being the interior design weirdo that I am, I’m still staring at my ceiling fan, but now it’s because I love it. I’m also especially happy that I was able to “upcycle” our fans, rather than throwing them in the dump and shelling out hundreds of dollars for new ones.
Renovating my house and doing these sorts of projects reminds me of the part in the documentary Helvetica when graphic designer Michael Bierut says, “…there was a time when it just felt so good to take something that was old and dusty and homemade and crappy looking and replace it with Helvetica. It just must have felt like you were scraping the crud off of filthy old things and kind of restoring them to shining beauty.” And all for $6 and one afternoon of time, I might add. (Ugh. Now I’ve also given myself away as both a typography and a documentary nerd.)
At any rate, obviously, I’ll be repeating this process with the other two fans. And I’ve got a few more house projects in the works, so let me know if you’d like to see more DIY ideas here at Get Rich Slowly!
Finally, I’d love to hear from you. What’s your favorite frugal home makeover project? Tell us about it in the comments!

50 best ways to make quick money in one day
Making money quickly is possible with some time and effort.
There are a lot of ways to make quick money in one day. In fact, many ideas center around how to make money online for beginners.
Here are 50 of the best methods that you can use to make some extra cash.
1. Work on freelance projects
Working on freelance projects can help you make quick money in one day by providing you with one-off jobs that can benefit from your skill set.
With the percentage of freelance workers in the workforce climbing steadily, there are many online marketplaces that make it easy to connect with businesses and individuals who need your services.
Sites like Upwork, Fiverr, and Toptal allow you to create a profile and showcase your work, making it easy for you to set your own rates and decide on the length of the project.
Additionally, the more experience you get, the more you can charge and the higher your demand will be, potentially leading to full-time work.
2. Sell items on consignment
Selling items on consignment can help you make quick money by providing an easy, fast way to earn a profit from gently used items.
With consignment shops, you can take your clothes, electronics, jewelry, musical instruments, or even your car to be sold without having to take an active role.
For a cut of the profits, your items will be placed in front of buyers, allowing you to make quick cash.
3. Take on odd jobs
If you’re looking for ways to make money quickly, odd jobs are a great way to do so.
Think of day laborer types of jobs. You can use an app like TaskRabbit to find work in your area.
Some of the common odd jobs you can consider include:
Gardening – you can offer to do gardening work such as weeding, planting, mowing, and trimming.
Furniture Assembly – if you have experience in assembling furniture, you can offer your services to people who need help.
Cleaning – you can offer cleaning services to keep homes and offices tidy.
Painting – you can offer your painting services to those who need help with their walls.
General Handyman Work – if you are good with your hands and have experience in repairing and fixing things, you can offer your services to people who need help.
Moving Gig – people are always looking for help with moving.
4. Trade Options
If done correctly, trading in options can help you make quick money and generate substantial returns in a relatively short period of time.
However, trading options come from experience and should not be taken as a get-rich scheme. Personally, I trade options for a living.
You can make quick money trading options if you know what you’re doing. The key is to identify when the market is going to move in a certain direction and then make the right trades to capitalize on the profits.
Here is the one and only investing course I recommend.
5. Become a rideshare driver
Becoming a rideshare driver can be an easy and convenient way to make money quickly.
All you need to get started is a valid license, active insurance coverage, and an approved vehicle. With Uber and Lyft, you can set your own hours and receive a base rate plus tips and distance or time-based bonuses.
From one of our rideshare drivers, we learned some tricks of the trade such as working in peak hours or in areas with popular nightlife scenes or active airports.
6. Offer house cleaning services
Nowadays, people don’t want to learn their own house, so starting a house cleaning service is a great way to make quick money.
With countless opportunities available online or on local job boards, you can easily find a job that works for you. There are even ways to market yourself so potential customers can find you!
If you have a background in cleaning and don’t mind physical labor, you can make up to $25 an hour or more.
Becoming a housecleaner is a great way to make extra money on the side and you can even make up to $200+ per weekend.
With a bit of effort, you could have a great side-hustle in no time!
7. Rent out your parking spot
If you live in a busy area and have a spot that’s in high demand, you can easily rent out the space for a premium price.
This can be especially profitable if you live near an event center and can offer parking to visitors who don’t want to pay a premium to park in a lot or parking structure. You can put your parking spot to work with services like Just Park or Neighbor.com and earn up to $300 per month.
Renting out your parking spot offers a great way to make extra money while utilizing unused resources or space.
8. Proofread documents
Whether you are a stay-at-home parent, a teacher looking for extra income during summer vacation, or someone with a passion for grammar and punctuation, you can make up to $65,000 a year by proofreading documents.
Make sure to take a Free Training Course: Caitlin Pyle offers a free workshop on how to use the most popular proofreading tool and how to become a work-from-home proofreader.
With some hard work and dedication, you can start earning quick money as a proofreader. Good luck!
9. Walk dogs
Walking dogs can be a great way to make some quick money.
Apps like Rover provide pet owners with a platform to find dog walkers in their area and pay for their services.
A dog walker can make $15-18 per 30 minute walk, with occasional bonuses for boarding or pet-sitting. This is a simple way to get your exercise and make cash.
10. Take an online survey
Companies and websites are always looking for consumer feedback in order to improve their products and services, and offer incentives such as cash, rewards, and gift cards for filling out surveys that can take as little as a few minutes.
Popular survey sites like Survey Junkie and Swagbucks offer these incentives, enabling individuals to make a few quid in just a few minutes of form filling.
Most surveys will only take a few minutes, so you will have to do a bunch to add up to serious cash for your feedback.
Here are the top legit survey platforms:
11. Sell your old junk
Are you looking for an easy way to make some extra money? Why not start by looking around your house and attic/basement for things you no longer use?
You can turn those things into cash by selling them online or having a yard sale.
With a little effort, you can easily make hundreds of dollars by selling your old stuff. It’s a great way to declutter your home and make some extra cash in the process.
Make sure to list your items with attractive descriptions and photos to draw in potential buyers.
12. House sitting
House sitting is a great way to make quick money. It allows you to watch someone’s home while they are away and take care of tasks such as feeding pets, watering plants, and taking out the trash.
You can usually make between $25 to $50 per day depending on the market demand in your area. It’s easy to start, with most sites having a minimum age requirement and a sign-up process that takes only minutes. Payment is typically made when the job is completed.
More importantly, beyond making good money, you are able to housesit in beautiful locations that you may not be able to do otherwise. Personally, this is something I want to start doing.

Most babysitters earn way more than minimum wage making this a great gig.

I have a confession to make. Now that we’re finally out of debt (except the mortgage), my wife and I decided to celebrate and go out shopping. We both got the urge to just drop our budget and go spend crazy for just one day, so we each took one of the credit cards and and went our separate ways.
My wife went to Macy’s. There was this purse that my wife has been looking at recently for $600 that she just had to have. She bought it. And she bought several new outfits for work, summer, spring and next fall.. Total damage, $4000.
I went to Best Buy. I have been eyeing this 60″ Plasma screen TV for the past year – and I finally just broke down and bought it. You only live once, right? And my birthday is coming up next month! Price tag – $4000.
I also decided that I wanted a Blu-Ray player now as well since the whole High-Def format war is over. And while I was at it, I also got a new Nintendo Wii to hook up to my huge new TV. There’s another $700.
So for the night we ended up spending almost $9000 dollars, and it felt so good.. We don’t have the money, but I’m tired of all this penny pinching, budgeting and responsible living. Why not go out and spend a little of your hard earned money on some luxuries once in a while, right? Sometimes it feels good to spend money you don’t have on things you don’t need!
That’s my new motto – if it feels good – spend!
* April Fools! We didn’t really go out and spend 9 grand on things we don’t need. We may feel like it sometimes, but we’re committed to wiser spending. Have you ever felt like doing something like this though?
It’s that time again, where we take a hard look at a mortgage program floating around the web.
Today, we’ll look at the so-called “Easy Orange” mortgage from ING Direct, a Dutch mortgage lender doing business on our shores (how dare they!).
They call “Easy Orange” the “mortgage for savers,” apparently because the associated mortgage rate is priced below comparable loan products.
Easy Orange mortgages come in the form of either a 5-year or 10-year fixed rate loan.
They’re still based on a 30-year amortization, meaning they’re balloon mortgages, with a final payment due after the five or 10 years are up.
Short Term Mortgages
That’s right, they’re due after just five or 10 years.
The big distinction is that ING offers a “rate renewal feature,” which allows borrowers to relock their rate for another term, for the cost of one mortgage payment (2 biweekly payments).
There’s a catch though – they may not always offer rate renewals, and interest rates and costs can change (go up). They probably won’t get any lower…
In other words, you may have to pony up the money for the “final payment,” which will likely be huge, or refinance elsewhere, assuming you don’t sell before the relatively short term is up.
Oh, and the Easy Orange forces you to make biweekly mortgage payments, though they’re free of charge.
So you’ll be making a mortgage payment every two weeks, which is the standard monthly payment cut in half. This makes for 13 full payments a year instead of 12.
Easy Orange Requirements:
– 20% down payment (or home equity if refinancing) – Must be owner occupied property (primary residence) – No vacation homes or investment properties – No manufactured homes, condotels, properties greater than 10 acres – Minimum credit score of 700 – Max loan amount of $750,000
Easy Orange Benefits:
– No application fees – No mortgage points – Biweekly payments – Free 60-day rate guarantee on purchases, 45 days for refinances – Apply online – Guaranteed closing costs (they won’t change from time of application) – Close online or over the phone at no extra charge – Pay electronically
Final Word
While the Easy Orange could save you some money in the short term via the lower mortgage rate associated with the loan program, it carries some serious risk if ING doesn’t offer a rate renewal, or if you’re unable to sell or refinance once the term is up.
Even if they do offer a rate renewal, it may be significantly higher than your previous rate.
They currently offer an interest rate of 2.990% (3.050% APR) on the 5-year product, which may be slightly lower (half point or so) than other adjustable-rate mortgages out there that adjust after five years.
But you’re faced with a decision after five years with Easy Orange, while other ARMs allow you to stay with the loan program, just at the fully indexed rate, which could be higher or lower.
Easy Orange also requires you to make biweekly mortgage payments, which is great if you want to actually pay off your mortgage early, but somewhat counterintuitive if your loan will be reset every five years.
In the end, it may not be worth the risk for the slight reward afforded via the Easy Orange mortgage, but it’s certainly a unique way of going about getting a mortgage.

Big money on the way
So now that you’ve got your rebate on the way, you may find yourself with an extra cash that you can use to buy that new TV, save for retirement or use to pay down debt. If you’re not sure of when you’ll be getting your payment, check out our post titled, “Economic Stimulus Rebate: When will you get your rebate?”
My wife just got out of the hospital after a 3 week stay for a blood clot in her left leg. It was a major health scare and we’re just thankful that she made it through alive. Because of her long hospital stay, however, we will have to deplete part of our emergency fund to pay all the bills. Luckily we had good insurance and we’ll only end up paying about $2000 of a total bill that will probably be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars. For us, finding a way to spend the $1200 economic stimulus rebate will be easy. We’ll be just sending the check directly to the hospitals.
7 ways to use your economic stimulus rebate
Besides medical emergencies, what are some good positive ways to use your economic Stimulus rebate besides just spending it on a big flat screen TV?
Pay down debt: This can be a great way to snowflake your way out of debt, although its more of a large snowball. Pay down your smallest debts and work your way up!
Bulk up your emergency fund: Take the money you’ve received and put it in a high-yield savings account to begin building (or continue growing) your emergency fund. In uncertain economic times like these it’s a good idea to plan ahead and make sure you’re ready in case you lose your job, have health issues (we know about this one) and
If you haven’t already, start a Roth IRA: Use the money to purchase a long term investment. The earlier you start saving for retirement, the better!
Pay for a needed home upgrade or repair: Use the money to replace your old crumbling driveway or to update your kitchen countertops. Try to use the money on things where you’ll see a return on your money when you sell, things that will improve your home’s value.
Donate your rebate: We all have good intentions of donating to our favorite causes, or giving more to the church we attend. We have good intentions but rarely have the money to follow through. Take the rebate that you received and send it to your favorite good cause! Not only will you be helping out a good cause, but you’ll get a great feeling from it as well!
Go on a mini-vacation: Everyone gets stressed out and sometimes a few days off is just what you need. Instead of spending your whole rebate on a vacation to Hawaii or a cruise in the Caribbean, take a mini-vacation for the weekend to a resort nearby, or stay in a fancy hotel for a couple of days. Take the rest of the money and save it, pay down debt or invest.
Make an extra mortgage payment: Make an extra payment on your mortgage and get it paid off sooner. The more of these you can make, the more years you can cut off the life of the loan.
What positive ways will you use your rebate?
So there are a few ideas of some positive things you can do with your economic stimulus rebate. Let me know in the comments what some of your ideas are as well and I’ll update the post with your suggestions as the bottom. If you’ve posted about this topic on your own blog, let me know and I’ll add you to the “related links” below as well!
