1. The X-Files

The X-Files is a science fiction television series that originally aired from 1993 to 2002. The show revolves around two FBI agents, Fox Mulder and Dana Scully, who investigate cases involving paranormal phenomena, extraterrestrial life, and government conspiracies.

“I went absolutely crazy for the crossovers with the other TGIF shows and when popstars (Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, Nsync, etc) did a guest shoot,” one person stated.

“Yeah those were fun to watch,” another commenter added.

Starring Will Smith, the American NBC sitcom is one of those 90s shows that people couldn’t get enough of. The show aired from 1990 until 1996, with six seasons and 148 episodes. It follows the misadventures of Will as he adjusts to his new life and clashes with his prim and proper relatives, including his Uncle Phil (James Avery) and Aunt Vivian (Janet Hubert/Daphne Maxwell Reid). Will’s cousins, Carlton (Alfonso Ribeiro), Hilary (Karyn Parsons), and Ashley (Tatyana M. Ali), also feature prominently in the series.

9. Married… With Children

10. Frasier

This neighborhood resale market returns this weekend for the first of three summer events. There will also be live music and potato-based pastries from Downstate Donuts. The market is pet-friendly and there is a $5 suggested donation for admission.

The Chapman at Sea Story

From Tasha: Chapman at Sea is a collaboration between myself, Tasha and my husband, Joe. The whole thing began with a vintage army duffle and the need for some surfboard bags. I inherited the duffle from my grandfather. He was an old army guy with a great collection of vintage military goods. I’d had the duffle for a long time. I always took it on my travels, it holds all of our dive and beach stuff while at home. And despite it being really old, it never wears out. It’s made from a heavy duty canvas that just keeps looking better the more it’s used. So when I went to make board bags I’ve always been into fabric and texture! I thought it would be really cool if they had the same utilitarian style and age just as well as my grandfather’s duffle bag.

Our board bags turned out really well and we enjoyed making them so we took the whole thing online. My artistic eye I was an illustrator prior! and Joe’s real life marine experience he’s a commercial diver! came together to make a super high quality bag. And people liked them! Beach bags were the next product we came out with and then leashes.

Tales to Live By

The obvious reason we named our company Chapman by the Sea is that Chapman is our last name and we live by the sea, but that’s not exactly where the name came from… I’ve often noticed that there are a lot of Chapmans involved in sea-faring activities- there are nautical textbooks written by Chapmans and near us, in Fort Lauderdale, there’s even a Chapman School of Seamanship! It seems like past Chapmans have had a lot to do with the ocean and since the company all started to fill a need we had in our own lives – the surfboard bags – and that [out to sea mentality] is pretty much how it continues. If there’s something we need, we look into making it, making it better, making it stylish.

We’re always on the lookout for new ways to use the classic materials we work with! It’s also very important to me that nothing go to waste – especially the leather. I want to use the animal product as respectfully as possible and not discard loads of it. The leashes are a perfect example for that because they allow us to use the smaller pieces of leather that are left over from the large bags. These little bits could easily be tossed out, but instead we put them into accenting the leashes- creating something beautiful with them!

Designing an Exclusive Piece

We started with our basic leash design and thought about what we could do to customize it further- make it special and unique. There were several versions we came up with, some more elaborate than others, but after a lot of input from the Apartment 34 crew we decided on a design that spoke most to the Apartment 34 brand – a classic style with some lovely upgraded materials and details, of course! All of our leashes have leather accents, but this one uses a gorgeous soft lambskin. And the lambskin is THE perfect shade of grey to compliment the white rope and brass hardware – nautical for sure, but with a modern, elegant twist. The oversized, hand wrapped tassel is the ultimate showstopper.

The labor market is moderating gracefully, but conditions remain too hot for the Fed’s liking. Job gains were relatively solid yet again in June, with total nonfarm payroll employment reaching 209,000 jobs, compared to 339,000 in May, according to data released Friday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. 

This increase is slightly under the average monthly gain of 341,000 jobs over the past 12 months.

The unemployment rate changed little at 3.6%, compared to 3.7% in May, with the total number of unemployed persons falling to 6 million. The unemployment rate has remained between 3.4% and 3.7% since March 2022.

“The incoming economic data has been filled with conflicting signals,” said Mortgage Bankers Association SVP and Chief Economist Mike Fratantoni in a statement. “Manufacturing activity remains quite weak, while consumer spending has held up somewhat better, and new home construction and sales have picked up. Our forecast is for a slowdown in economic activity in the second half of 2023, with a recovery in early 2024. The June employment report reinforces that forecast.”

While job growth and wage growth are trending down, both are still well above the pace that would be consistent with the Federal Reserve’s inflation target, Fratantoni noted.

“We now expect that the FOMC will raise the federal funds target another 25 basis points at its July meeting.”

The lion’s share of the job growth in June came from gains in the government sector (+60,000 jobs), health care sector (up 41,000 jobs), the social assistance sector (up 24,000 jobs), and the construction sector (up 23,000 jobs).

Employment in the construction industry has increased by an average of 15,000 per month thus far this year, compared with an average of 22,000 per month in 2022. In June, employment in residential specialty trade contractors continued to trend up (+10,000).

Employment in the professional and business services sector and in the leisure and hospitality sector changed little in June.

“The construction industry is very interest-rate sensitive, so many expected job growth to crater. Yet, new-home construction has been supported by the lack of existing-home inventory,” said First American Deputy Chief Economist Odeta Kushi in a statement. 

“In the June jobs report, residential building construction employment is up 0.8% year over year, while non-residential is up by 4.8%. Residential building employment is up 11% compared with pre-pandemic, while non-residential building is up 1.8%. Both were up on a month-over-month basis. The fastest monthly growth came from residential specialty trade contractors. This sub-sector comprises establishments whose primary activity is performing specific activities, such as pouring concrete, site preparation, plumbing, painting and electrical work.”

With existing homeowners disincentivized to sell and few homes on the market, consumers may decide to renovate their own home instead of trading up with a new-home purchase, increasing demand for construction workers, economists said.

The number of residential building construction jobs came down from the recent peak in January of this year, but not by much, noted Kushi. 

“Residential construction is defying expectations and it’s because the housing market continues to face a housing shortage.”

June’s job report showed the lowest monthly job change since a decline in December 2020, according to Lisa Sturtevant, chief economist at Bright MLS. 

“The Federal Reserve has raised interest rates 10 times and it is possible that we are finally seeing the intended slowdown in the economy… Today’s employment report does not provide a clear indication as to what the Federal Reserve will do at its next meeting but the expectation is still for a rate increase when the Federal Open Market Committee convenes again. The modest slowdown in the labor market could give the Fed renewed confidence in its ability to bring the economy in for a soft landing.”
