The average American has four credit cards, according to Experian, the credit reporting agency. However, travel rewards enthusiasts may differ slightly from the average American regarding credit cards and may carry more than four cards. But if you’re new to points and miles or just taking it slowly, you may not have a wallet full of credit cards.

Whether you’re above, below or on average regarding the number of credit cards you hold, you probably don’t bring them all with you while traveling. But have you ever thought about how many you should bring and what types?

Let’s dive into why it’s important to travel with at least two cards and some best practices for your backup card, whether you’re traveling within the United States or internationally.

Card network issues

There are four major credit card networks in the United States: Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover. Credit card networks facilitate transactions between a merchant and an issuer. Some, such as American Express and Discover, are both a network and an issuer. On the other hand, Visa and Mastercard are only networks and have various issuers. If you have a Visa credit card, it will be issued by a bank, such as Chase or Bank of America, whereby a Mastercard credit card could be issued by Citi or Wells Fargo.

Visa and Mastercard credit cards tend to be widely accepted in the United States and abroad; American Express and Discover are less so, especially abroad. Suppose your primary or everyday spending card at home is an Amex or Discover. In that case, bringing a Visa or Mastercard while traveling is a good idea if you encounter merchants that do not accept Amex or Discover. And in the rare instance that a network suffers an outage and you can’t make any purchases, you’ll be able to switch to a backup card on another network.

Bank or issuer problems

You may also need another card in cases where your primary card is lost, stolen, declined or locked due to a fraud alert. If possible, your backup should be a card from a bank different from your primary card.

Worst-case scenario, if a bank or issuer flags your accounts for suspicious activity and locks all of your accounts while traveling, you can switch to a card from a different bank. But if all of your cards are from the same bank, you’ll be out of luck until you’re able to clear up the issue with your account, which could get problematic if you’re in the middle of a transaction, in a time crunch, or unable to contact your bank.

Keep a backup card in the hotel room safe

In some cases, like if your card is declined or locked, it would be helpful to have a second card with you at all times to still be able to complete your transaction. However, the general advice is to keep your backup card somewhere secure, like in your hotel room safe. If your wallet is lost or stolen and all of your cards are in it, you’ll wish you had set aside at least one card for safekeeping.

Some travelers even go as far as keeping a second, or decoy, wallet. Some carry a decoy wallet with a small amount of cash, and some closed or expired credit cards to fool a mugger or pickpocketer if an unfortunate incident occurs. Others use a second wallet to carry around just the card they need for the day, while the main wallet and other cards remain safe in the hotel room.

With the growing acceptance of mobile payment methods (such as Apple Pay and Google Pay), even internationally, you may also want to add multiple cards to your mobile wallet. You or a merchant may still prefer to use the physical card, but at least you’ll know the mobile wallet option is there in a pinch.

Sure, but if any are lost or stolen, it could be a big headache as you’ll make many phone calls to cancel cards. And who wants to spend their vacation doing that? Suze Orman set off quite a stir a few months ago in a New York Times interview. Although some folks were all atwitter to find out she was gay, what really had people in the personal finance world talking was the fact that the most successful personal finance writer in the country had the bulk of her $25 million portfolio in conservative municipal bonds, with only about $1 million invested in the stock market.

My buddy Chuck Jaffe, a MarketWatch columnist and not exactly a Suze fan, had a particularly good time that little factoid. Chuck has often criticized Suze’s advice as too conservative, and her lack of personal exposure to the stock market confirmed his suspicions that she was out of touch with the needs of everyday people. “In short,” he thundered, “the person being trusted as everyone’s financial adviser has a portfolio that few people could live with.”

I think Suze should be allowed to invest any way she wants to, but the whole kerfluffle points up an irony of personal finance columnizing: the more successful we pundits are, the less our lives resemble those of the majority of our readers.

I was thinking about that when J.D. asked if I’d be willing to write a little exposé for his site on how well I follow my own advice.

“I always wonder just how personal finance gurus lead their lives,” J.D. wrote in an email. “Do they really follow the advice they give? Are they frugal? Do they put their money in index funds? Do they drive older cars? I think this is a question many people have. I also think it’s one reason they read Get Rich Slowly: I quite clearly do follow my own advice, or try to.”

So do I — mostly. At J.D.’s request, I’m pulling back the curtain a bit to show you where I walk my talk, and where I’m full of (well-meaning) hot air.

Am I frugal? Congenitally. Most of the time.

I grew up in a middle-class family with a dad who worked as an electric journeyman at the local power plant and a stay-at-home mom who had the Depression-era baby’s classic aversion to debt. We had a garden, we canned, we rinsed and reused baggies. My mom went back to work to help pay my college tuition, while I worked two to four part-time jobs each semester to make ends meet. I graduated without student loan or credit card debt.

I’ve never been much of a shopper, and was taught to pay credit card balances in full every month. (I have carried credit card debt a couple of times in my life — for cash flow reasons, not because we couldn’t pay the whole bill.) Since my early 20s, when I started working as a daily newspaper reporter, I’ve saved 15% to 20% — and sometimes more — of my income. Most of it goes into retirement funds and the majority of those are invested in stock mutual funds.

But a lot of the things I used to do to save money I now do mostly to save the environment: things like turning off lights, using a programmable thermostat, walking or biking instead of driving the car.

And now that I travel a lot, I’ve developed an appreciation for luxuries that would have been unthinkable in my salad days: things like membership to an airline lounge and occasionally paying for a first-class ticket, when I can’t qualify for an upgrade with frequent flyer miles. Flying coach these days reminds me way too much of riding the Greyhound bus during college, and I’m lucky enough to be able to afford an alternative.

Do I put my money in index funds? Yes. Mostly.

I’m a confirmed believer that people who think they’re going to beat the market probably are deluding themselves. I know I would be; I’m way too busy to monitor individual stocks or actively-managed mutual funds.

But a recent review of our portfolio showed that while most of our money is in broad-market index funds, we’re still hanging on to a few actively-managed funds I bought before I’d become firmly convinced of the futilely of trying to predict market-beaters. Like the cobbler’s children with no shoes, my portfolio’s overdue for a clean-up and rebalancing. Thanks, J.D., for goading me into it.

Do I drive an older car? Oh, boy. Do I.

I’m the proud driver of a 1993 SUV with—ta-da—250,000 miles on it. I inherited it from my husband, who upgraded to a later-model Volvo. (The man actually cares what he drives, unlike me.) I’d eventually like to replace it with a more fuel-efficient car, but at this point I drive so few miles that it doesn’t make sense to replace it. Besides that, I’m oddly curious to see how long the old beast will hold out.

I’ve also learned a lot about money over the years by making mistakes. I bought “retirement property” when I was in my 20s (anybody want 14 acres in Alaska, 80 miles from the nearest road?). After years of railing about the insanity of the dot-com boom, I sunk $2,000 into a tech fund in — get this — March 2000, about a week before the bubble started to burst. And the last time we bought a house, I forgot (yes, forgot) about closing costs, and had to sell off some investments at the last minute to cover closing costs. (Fortunately, the stock market cooperated with me for once — you’re not supposed to keep short-term money, like down payments and closing costs, in stock or stock mutual fund investments lest they take a dive right when you need the money.)

But yeah, overall I’ve followed my own advice. I’ve avoided toxic debt including credit card debt; put a pile away for retirement; and invested a ton of money over the years in fun and experiences. I’ve traveled around the world, earned my pilot’s license, threw some great parties, took two sabbaticals to care for my dying mother, and am in the process of raising a wonderful daughter (who may turn out to be our more expensive experience yet, but is soooo worth it). I firmly believe that managing money well helps you live life well, and that’s the message I hope to communicate to readers — regardless of where they happen to be on the road to financial health.

A couple of readers have mentioned that they’re nervous about the stock market’s recent volatility. I’ve read similar concerns on other blogs and financial news sites. People are worried that the stock market’s performance over the last month portends an impending bear market, and they don’t know what to do.

Reading these concerns reminded me of Why Smart People Make Big Money Mistakes, which I reviewed last week. In the book, the authors discuss panic selling as a common financial pitfall. When people suffer from loss aversion, short-term losses cause them to sell investments prematurely, which can lead to greater pain:

One of the most obvious and important areas in which loss aversion skews judgment is in investing. In the short term, being especially sensitive to losses contributes to the panic selling that accompanies stock market crashes. The Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbles (along with stock prices and mutual fund shares in general), and the pain of these losses makes many investors overreact: the injured want to stop the bleeding. The problem, of course, is that pulling your money out of the stock market on such a willy-nilly basis leaves you vulnerable to a different sort of pain — the pangs you’ll feel when stock prices rise while you’re licking your wounds.

But what can you do if being in the market makes you nervous? You don’t want to lose your money — what happens if the market continues to fall? If you feel trepidation about stocks, assess your risk tolerance. There are several online tools that can help you with this:

If your risk tolerance is low, then the stock market may not be right for you. Perhaps you should consider less volatile investments until you’ve researched the market’s historic performance.

If you have a decent tolerance for risk and still feel nervous, pay less attention to market news. Again, Why Smart People Make Big Money Mistakes offers excellent advice:

Pay less attention to your investments. Horrors! How can we think such heresy. Don’t worry, we’re not advocating turning a totally blind eye to your hard-earned savings, mostly because nobody would listen: a recent American Stock Exchange study indicated that nearly 40 percent of young, middle-class investors check their investment returns once a week! And that’s simply too often. The more frequently you check your investments, the more you’ll notice — and feel the urge to react to — the ups and downs that are an inevitable part of the stock and bond markets. For most investors — frankly, for all investors who don’t trade professionally — a yearly review of your portfolio is frequent enough to make necessary adjustments in your allocation of assets.

One strategy for minimizing fears is to buy and hold low-cost stock market index funds. Reduce the effect of market fluctuations by making systematic regular investments. This is what I intend to do when I’ve eliminated my debt — I’ll schedule a regular monthly purchase of QQQQ (or similar index fund), automate the process, and forget about it.

In The Little Book of Common Sense Investing, John C. Bogle, the great pioneer of index funds, warns against attaching too much meaning to what he terms the “expectations market”, the guessing that investors — amateur and professional — make when trying to predict the market’s direction. When we begin to focus on the short-term noise, we’re speculating and not investing. Bogle writes:

There are bumps along the way in [investment returns]. Sometimes, as in the Great Depression of the early 1930s, these bumps are large. But we get over them. So, if you stand back from [a chart of stock market returns since 1900], the trend of business fundamentals looks almost like a straight line sloping gently upward, and those periodic bumps are barely visible.

The entire text of Common Sense Investing is a treatise on the virtues of index funds. Bogle states that “the case for the success of indexing in the past is compelling and unarguable”. He believes overall market returns may be lower in the coming decade, but that this actually makes index funds (with their low costs) more attractive, not less attractive.

If the road to investment success is filled with dangerous turns and and giant potholes, never forget that simple arithmetic can enable you to moderate those turns and avoid those potholes. So do your best to diversify to the nth degree; minimize your investment expenses; and focus your emotions where they cannot wreak the kind of havoc that most people experience in their investment programs. Rely on your own common sense. Emphasize all-stock-market index funds. Carefully consider your risk tolerance and the portion of your investments you allocate to equities. Then stay the course.

In other words: your best choice is to invest in low-cost index funds that mirror market performance, even during rough patches. If you are risk averse, then shift some of your portfolio to bond-market index funds. Maintain your investment strategy, no matter which way the market is moving.

Benjamin Graham once wrote: “The investor with a portfolio of sound stocks should expect their prices to fluctuate and should neither be concerned by sizable declines nor become excited by sizable advances.” It’s not the short-term that matters; it’s the long-term that’s important.

A record 135,431 default notices were sent to California homeowners during the first quarter of the year, up 80 percent from the fourth quarter and 19 percent from the same period a year ago, according to DataQuick.

The company attributed the sharp rise in delinquencies to the ongoing recession along with the delay caused by legislation aimed at stalling foreclosure activity.

“The nastiest batch of California home loans appears to have been made in mid to late 2006 and the foreclosure process is working its way through those,” said John Walsh, DataQuick president, in a release.

“Back then different risk factors were getting piled on top of each other. Adjustable-rate mortgages can be good loans. So can low- down-payment loans, interest-only loans, stated-income loans, etcetera. But if you combine these elements into one loan, it’s toxic.”

Aint that the truth…throw in falling home prices and you’ve got a mortgage crisis on your hands, a big one at that.

The median origination month for last quarter’s defaulted loans was July 2006, just four months later than the median origination month for defaulted loans a year earlier, suggesting it was a period of particularly poor underwriting.

“Of the 3.7 million home loans made in 2004, less than 1 percent have since resulted in a lender filing a default notice. Of the 3.7 million loans originated in 2005, 4.9 percent have triggered a default notice so far. Of the 3 million in 2006, 8.5 percent have so far resulted in default. A particularly toxic period appears to have been August through November 2006 which had more than a 9 percent default rate.”

The mortgage lenders with the highest default rates were ResMAE Mortgage (69.9 percent default rate), Master Financial (64.6 percent), and Ownit Mortgage Solutions (63.6 percent).

Of the top lenders, Indymac fared worst with a default rate of 18.9 percent, followed by World Savings at 8 percent and Countrywide at 7.7 percent.

For first mortgages, California homeowners were a median five months behind on mortgage payments when a notice of default was filed, owing a median $12,926 on a median $346,400 mortgage.

For home equity loans and lines of credit, borrowers owed a median $4,229 on a median $63,600 credit line.

A total of 43,620 homes were actually lost to foreclosure during the first quarter, down 5.5 percent from 46,183 in the prior quarter and 7.6 percent from 47,221 during the first quarter of 2008, thanks in part to various moratoria.

Mortgages were most likely to go into default in Riverside, Merced and San Joaquin counties, and least likely in the counties of Marin, San Francisco, and San Mateo.

Foreclosure resales accounted for 58.1 percent of all California resale activity last quarter, up from 33.1 percent a year ago.

From co-living and affordability fixes to helping solve social issues faced by a large segment of society, today’s innovators are rethinking the way we work, play, and live. Here’s a look at a few smart startups that are taking a broader approach for addressing our needs through communal thinking.

Despite a digital movement that’s grown up through social networking, globalization, and an ever increasingly interconnected world, real community has slipped through our grasp these last few decades.
The millennial generation, along with the younger cohort who about to enter the workforce in the era of smartphones and laptops, they’re ironically the loneliest and most disconnected group in history. Taking the trend a step farther, this story at urbanNext predicts that
“by the fourth decade of the 21st century, 70 percent of the world’s population will be urbanized.” The report goes on to frame the larger problem that will arise out of the ever-increasing cost of affordable living space. In the years to come billions of people around the world will grapple with how to find and pay for a place to live.

This digital age has cause us to redefine much of what we considered conventional wisdom. The desire for home ownership, long thought of as the “American Dream,” is one of these conventional ideas. It’s high time we reconsidered our individual and collective dreams in order to create a healthy and sustainable future for us all.
