Becoming disabled can potentially lead to a reduced income, along with an increase in costs. This kind of disability insurance goes into effect if you can’t work for an extended time due to an injury or a disability. These plans give the policyholder a portion of their lost income—typically 60% to 80% of their monthly salary.

You may be able to purchase insurance through your employer, or you can buy a policy on your own. To make a claim, however, you’ll have to acquire a policy before a disability happens and make all premium payments to keep it in force.

Step 2: Apply for disability benefits

Beyond private disability insurance, some federal and state resources are available to help supplement the income of those affected by a disability. These include Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and Veterans’ benefits.

One of the most common types of financial help for disabled adults is SSDI. This benefit compensates individuals for lost income due to a disability that has greatly reduced their ability to work—or has required them to stop working entirely.

In 2024, eligible persons may receive up to $3,822 per month—although the exact amount is based on work history. You might be eligible for SSDI if:

You have a disability (including blindness).
You have worked for at least five of the last 10 years.

Supplemental Security Income

Another common financial resource for people with disabilities is SSI. This federal program provides monthly income for people with disabilities and older adults with little to no income or resources.

Currently, individuals can receive up to $943 a month and couples can receive up to $1,415 from SSI. The monthly amount a person receives is determined by factors such as other income, living situation, assets, and more.

Some states offer additional payments for residents with disabilities that won’t impact their SSI eligibility. These state supplements are meant to cover the necessities of daily living, like food and shelter. Check if your state offers SSI supplements.

Veterans’ benefits

IIf you’re a Veteran, you might be eligible for Veterans Affairs (VA) disability compensation. This is a monthly, tax-free payment for Veterans who suffer service-related illnesses or injuries—affecting either their physical or mental health. In some cases, preexisting conditions are also covered if the Veteran’s service made the condition worse.

Households that include an adult with a disability require, on average, 28% more income to maintain the same standard of living as those that don’t.

What to know when applying for disability benefits

You can apply for disability benefits like SSDI and SSI as soon as you become disabled. Note that you can apply for both programs at the same time—eligibility for one won’t affect eligibility for the other—but only about 10% of beneficiaries qualify to receive both.

However, you’ll have to wait six months to receive SSDI benefits, and this waiting period starts the first full month after your disability began, as determined by the Social Security Administration. For SSI benefits, you’ll begin receiving payments the first full month after you apply or after your eligibility is approved, whichever is later.

To apply for either or both programs, you’ll need to complete an application for disability benefits and an Adult Disability Report. You can submit both forms online or during an interview with a Social Security Administration representative. Your interview may take place either in person at your local Social Security office or by phone.

Ultimately, if you are unable to work or need to reduce your hours because of a disability, you may need to reassess your budget and spending. And if you’re coming up short, some programs can help fill in the gaps, like:

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF): This federal, time-limited program provides financial support for families. Each state manages its own arm of the program and determines the specific benefits and eligibility requirements.
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP): This federal nutrition assistance program provides benefits for families, enabling them to make eligible food purchases in authorized stores.

While making less money can be discouraging, having a disability doesn’t mean you need to resign yourself to living with a low income or no income forever.

“People with disabilities have the same talent and ambitions as everyone else,” Foley says. “A disability doesn’t mean you can’t retrain for a new or even better job and build whatever financial future you want to have.”

Step 4: Navigate insurance coverage

It’s crucial to have health insurance, especially when you’re dealing with a disability. But if you can’t continue working, or continue working enough to keep your current coverage, you’ll need to find an alternative to employer-provided insurance.

If you’re eligible for SSDI payments, you’ll also gain access to health insurance coverage under Medicare. However, there is a two-year waiting period before this coverage kicks in.

One solution: You may be able to get Medicaid coverage while you wait. The purpose of Medicaid is to offer health insurance coverage to low-income Americans—a group that currently includes more than 10 million adults and children with disabilities.

Medicaid benefits

Medicaid is a joint federal and state program, which means each state runs its own Medicaid program. States determine the type, amount, and duration of Medicaid benefits that eligible residents can receive.

However, there are certain mandatory benefits that all states must provide, such as:

Inpatient and outpatient hospital services
Physician services
Laboratory and X-ray services
Home health services

Common home alterations include:

Installing ramps and lifts
Widening doorways
Adding accessible showers and toilets
Lowering counters and sinks

If you need assistance financing these renovations, some federal and local programs may be available, including those that provide grants or low-interest loans for rural homeowners and grants for Veterans. Check with your state to see what local programs exist and if you qualify.

Step 7: Learn about available tax breaks

Taxpayers can claim many income exclusions, deductions, and credits, but some are particularly helpful for people with disabilities and their families.

Income exclusions

Income exclusions are what they sound like—money that’s not included in the IRS calculation of your taxable income. Below are two disability income exclusions to familiarize yourself with.

Social Security benefits: If SSDI payments were the only income you received during the year, your benefits are generally not taxable. If you received other income, part of your benefits may be taxable. SSI payments, however, are exempt.
Military and government disability pensions: Certain military and government disability pensions or disability benefits you receive from the Department of Veterans Affairs are not taxable.

Tax deductions

Tax deductions decrease your taxable income, lowering your overall tax liability. If you’ve been affected by a disability, you may be allowed to deduct expenses like these (within some limits):

Impairment-related outlays to help make your work environment more accessible

But the day may come when you need to know how to stop automatic payments on a debit card. This could involve changing your account settings, revoking authorization, or contacting your bank.

Canceling your automatic payments with certain vendors and financial institutions can occasionally be a hassle. And sometimes, if you’re not paying attention, months can go by without you realizing that recurring fees are still being deducted from your account.

Here, you’ll learn four effective ways to stop automatic payments when the time comes to do so.

Federal law grants you the right to cancel an automatic debit card payment, or stop ACH payments, even if you previously permitted them. There are generally no fees or penalties for canceling an automatic payment preference.

1. Turning Off Automatic Payments in Your Account

These days, most utility companies and vendors invite you to automate your finances. When you create an online account, they will encourage you to sign up for automatic payments. This makes it more likely that they will receive your money in a timely fashion and it may allow them to cut down on monthly billing efforts. It also can make it easier for you to stop an automatic payment.

Your automatic payments can usually be set up and terminated simply by switching an option in your settings. Sign in with your username and password and select “opt out of automatic payments” in your personal account. This action is typically performed in the “billing and payment” section in the site menu. If you need help, a customer service representative can often guide you via online chat or over the phone.

Once you’ve turned off your automatic payment feature, it might be wise to document the event. Take a picture of a confirmation message and note the date.

If you’ve been saving money in a certificate of deposit (CD), great job! CDs can be a safe and smart way to see your money grow, especially when interest rates are high. But CDs don’t lock your money away forever—and that’s a good thing. When your CD reaches its maturity date, you’ll need to decide what to do next with the money you’ve invested.

Do CDs automatically renew? In many cases, yes. However, you generally have to choose one of three options when CDs mature. You can:

Renew the full amount of the CD for the same term.
Renew the CD but change the amount of money invested and/or its term length.
Close the CD and withdraw the money.

Considerations before and at CD maturity

Your money goals

What are you saving for? Is it a short-term goal, like a vacation or a down payment on a car? Or a longer-term goal, like retirement or your child’s college fund? If you need the money sooner rather than later, you might want to renew the CD for a shorter term or close it. If your goal is further in the future, renewing for a longer term could help you earn more interest.

Your timeline for needing access to the funds

CDs are best for money you know you won’t need immediately, since most have early withdrawal penalties. If there’s a chance you’ll need the money before the CD matures, consider a shorter-term CD or a different type of account like a money market.

With Discover® non-individual retirement account (IRA) CDs, you can opt to have your interest paid out monthly to give you some access to funds during the CD’s lifetime.¹ You can also change your interest payment settings at any time.

Tip: Build a CD ladder for more flexibility: If you’re attracted to the higher interest rates CDs offer but prefer being able to access some of your money periodically, a CD ladder strategy might help.

To build a ladder, you split your money among two or more CDs with different maturity dates. For example, you could open 1-year, 2-year, and 3-year CDs at the same time. When each CD matures, you can withdraw the money if it’s needed or renew the CD to continue earning interest. This gives you the option to access some of your money periodically while keeping the rest saved at higher interest rates.

How CDs compare to other savings options

CDs typically offer fixed interest rates—unlike the variable rates offered by most traditional savings, checking, and money market accounts. In exchange for this fixed rate, you agree to leave your money in the CD for the full term.

Savings and money market accounts allow you to withdraw money at any time, but their interest rates are not guaranteed. However, CDs may offer a higher interest rate than these other types of accounts. Consider comparing rates across different types of savings products, and keep in mind that different CD terms may have different rates.

It’s also worth comparing CDs to other investment options like stocks or bonds. With CDs, you know exactly how much interest you’ll earn, and your principal is protected up to Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) limits.

Earn guaranteed returns with a fixed-rate CD

Investments like stocks have the potential for higher returns but a greater risk of losing money. Diversification across asset classes is often a smart decision—but the right way to allocate your savings and investments will depend on your risk tolerance and time horizon.

With these considerations in mind, determine what works best for you. Keep in mind that the renewal policies below are specific to Discover non-IRA CDs. Other banks might handle renewals differently, so check your bank’s specific policies.

Option 1: Renew the full amount of the CD for the same term

If you do nothing when your CD matures, Discover will automatically renew it for you after a 9-day grace period. The new CD will have the same term as the old one. So if your CD was for 1 year, the new one will also be for a 1-year term.

The interest rate on the new CD will reflect Discover’s current rate for that term on the day the CD matures. This rate might be higher or lower than the rate you had before. If you want to simply renew the CD for the same amount of money and length of time, you don’t have to actively do anything.

However, if you’d like provide instructions online or via the mobile app, you can do so starting 30 days before the maturity date and your CD will be renewed on the maturity date. Please note that if you contact Discover via phone or through the Secure Message Center to renew your CD for the same amount and term, the agent will simply allow the CD to auto-renew as scheduled.

Remember, the new interest rate is not locked in until the maturity date of the CD you had previously, even if you give instructions before that time. Your new rate will reflect what’s available on the day the CD matures for your selected term.

Option 2: Renew the CD but change the amount of money invested and/or its term length

You can choose to renew your CD but make changes by updating the amount of money you put in and/or the length of the new term. For example, you could add more money to the CD to help it grow faster. Or you could select a different term that offers a higher interest rate.

To update your CD terms, you can provide Discover with instructions starting 30 days before the CD’s maturity date. You also can make changes during a grace period of up to 9 days after the maturity date. If you give instructions before the CD matures, Discover will make the changes on the maturity date, and the CD maturity grace period will no longer apply.

To set renewal instructions for your CD on the Discover mobile app:

Log in and select your CD.
Tap View Account Details at the bottom.
Select Maturity Instructions, then Modify and Renew.
Follow the steps to make changes.

To set your renewal instructions online:

Log in to the Discover banking website and select your CD.
Click Account Settings, then Edit next to Maturity Instructions.
Follow the steps to make changes.

You can also add or receive funds online via an internal transfer (between Discover accounts) or an ACH transfer from a linked external account. If you want to add to or take money from the CD by check or wire transfer, contact Discover by phone or secure message.

Option 3: Close the CD and withdraw the money

When your CD matures, you can choose to close it and withdraw all of the funds.

In order to cash out a CD at maturity, contact Discover by phone or secure message. Tell us that you want to close your CD and specify how you want to withdraw the money. There are several options for how to withdraw money from a CD account. You can transfer it to another eligible Discover deposit account or linked external account. You can also get your money sent to you by check or wire transfer.

Penalty for early CD withdrawal

Can you close a CD early? Technically, yes. But if you close a CD before its maturity date, you’ll probably pay a penalty. So it’s best to wait until the CD matures to close it—unless you really need the money sooner.

Tip: If you close your Discover CD before its maturity date, you may face an early withdrawal penalty. Discover’s CD early withdrawal penalty structure is as follows (see the account agreement for more details)²:

For CDs with terms of less than 1 year: 3 months’ simple interest
For CDs with terms of 1 year to less than 4 years: 6 months’ simple interest
For CDs with terms of 4 years to less than 5 years: 9 months’ simple interest
For CDs with terms of 5 years to less than 7 years: 18 months’ simple interest
For CDs with terms of 7 years to 10 years: 24 months’ simple interest

If you pay your credit card balance in full each month, then your card’s ongoing interest rate (aka its annual percentage rate, or APR) is irrelevant, since you’ll never owe any interest.

But if you tend to carry a balance from month to month, knowing where your interest rate stands is key to saving money, especially if you’re revolving several balances.

Credit card APRs can change periodically based on a variety of factors, such as the general state of the economy and your own creditworthiness, so it’s not always easy to keep up with. (A credit card issuer has the right to change a card’s interest rate on future purchases, but it must generally notify you 45 days in advance.)

But here’s why it’s helpful to be aware of the figure and how to use it to your advantage.

You can use it to recognize better options

Understanding your credit card’s interest rate can help you in spotting better ones. Locate your credit card’s APR on the card’s statement or by logging into the account online or in the app.

For context, the average interest rate for credit card accounts assessed interest charges as of August 2024 was 23.37%, according to data from the Federal Reserve. That kind of interest can get costly in a hurry, although rates will vary widely depending on the type of card.

Rewards credit cards and store credit cards, for instance, tend to have higher interest rates, so they’re ideal only for those who can pay off the balance in full every month, ensuring that interest charges don’t eat into the value of any rewards or perks the card offers.

If your interest rate is significantly higher than average, or simply too high for your liking, you may have a few options, depending on your credit:

Consolidate debt

Consolidation options, such as a balance transfer credit card or a personal loan, can bring down the cost of your debt. The ideal offer for a balance transfer credit card is a 0% intro APR promotion for a lengthy window of time, giving you breathing room to chip away at the debt without incurring interest charges. It’s important to factor in the cost of any balance transfer fee to determine if it will save money compared to the interest charges you’re expected to pay over time. If you have debt across several credit cards, a personal loan can consolidate balances into a single lower-interest fixed payment.

These kinds of options will typically require good credit (typically FICO scores of 690 or higher) to get the most affordable rates. Another option for those with less-than-ideal credit is to see whether you qualify for a debt management plan at a nonprofit credit counseling agency. These plans consolidate eligible debts into a single fixed payment at a lower rate, usually regardless of your credit scores.

“In our latest analysis, the interest rates have gone from an average of 28% down to 7.3%, so that can actually give people the opportunity to handle that,” says Andy Manthei, a former financial counselor and currently a change cultivator through new partnerships and advocacy for marginalized communities at GreenPath, a nonprofit credit counseling agency.

Regardless of which option you choose, avoid adding new purchases to your credit card while you’re paying down debt. Switch to a payment method like cash or debit to make more progress toward your goals.

Negotiate a lower APR

Debt consolidation will save more money on hefty balances that require a long term to pay down. For lower short-term balances that can be paid off relatively quickly, though, consider calling your credit card issuer to see whether negotiating a lower interest rate is possible.

It can help to have an account that is in good standing, and you may have to talk to several people before making progress, but it may be worth it if saves you money. Also consider this option if your credit scores have increased since you last received the card, Manthei says.

Alternately, if a financial hardship might get in the way of making payments, ask your issuer whether it offers a hardship plan. This option could lower your interest rate for a short window, depending on the terms the issuer offers. The types of hardships that might qualify include circumstances beyond your control: a pay cut, unemployment, a serious illness, a family emergency or a natural disaster, among others.

Switch to a card with a lower APR

Once you’ve paid down existing debt, contemplate whether you want to return to spending with credit cards at all. The key is knowing yourself and whether you can manage cards differently the next time around. If you know you’re still likely to carry a balance over time — even though it’s not ideal — explore low-interest credit cards that can prevent your bill from becoming too expensive.

Some credit card issuers offer pre-qualification options that not only help you determine your odds of approval, but in some cases may even show you your “offer” — including your APR and/or credit limit — before you officially apply, meaning there won’t be any impact on your credit scores unless you decide to accept.

“You could even look at local credit unions or banks … and see what is their range of rates,” Manthei says.

Credit unions require a membership to join based on different criteria like where you live or work, but joining one could be worth the extra steps. Federal law caps the interest rates on most loans and credit cards at federally chartered credit unions. As of this writing, interest rates on those products don’t exceed 18%.

Our Verdict

Keep in mind that for most of these deals the bonus points won’t be available for a few weeks, and it’s not worth buying unless you can manage the risk of something going wrong with the bonus points posting a few weeks down the line. There have been times when people have had issues logging in; therefore, I’d recommend screenshotting and copying the gift card info immediately. I’d also recommend using up the Pepper points as soon as possible just in case something goes wrong with the company.

Sleep environment is key

While there are many factors that can impact your child’s quality of sleep, two essential elements to the perfect sleep environment are a calm and peaceful space for them to rest at night and during nap times. Child sleep expert Charmian Mead from The Sleeping Baby Routine shares more information about how to set up a nursery room for sleep below:

“To encourage independent and positive sleep habits, it’s essential to create a calm and peaceful sleep environment for your newborn, baby, or toddler. As your baby grows they require a slightly different approach and adjustment to their environment but regardless of age, light, temperature, and calm are key to indicate sleep. Your baby’s or toddler’s room should be a sanctuary, a safe, comfortable place to settle. While an infant’s overall routine hugely influences their sleep, the sleep environment is the finishing touch that provides the security they need to relax and rest.”

We all want our children to have positive sleep experiences. So when planning out how to set up a nursery room, being mindful of the above advice can aid in ensuring that your child has consistent, restful sleep while in your home!

Be mindful of temperature and darkness

As Charmian noted above, room temperature and lighting (or lack of lighting) play a crucial role in optimizing your child’s sleep. Maintaining an appropriate temperature in your child’s nursery is important for their comfort and safety, however, it is sometimes easier said than done – especially during colder months. Katie from Slumber & Sprout suggests “the use of sleeping bags / sleepsuits for little ones who aren’t yet in a bed because they are a great way to ensure that you have dressed your little one appropriately for sleeping. A comfortable room temperature is between 19-22 degrees Celsius. In the winter we recommend that you warm the room with a safe heater and keep the heater a safe distance from the sleep space to avoid overheating.”

Xan Coffman, founder and certified infant and toddler sleep expert at My Baby Sleepology also shared some great insights on the effect of proper lighting for your child’s nursery, stating that “Creating the perfect sleep environment for your baby is key to fostering restful nights and naps. Start by keeping the room dark with blackout curtains to block any outside light, helping your baby understand that it’s time for sleep and to elevate their natural levels of melatonin.

White noise machines or a gentle fan can work wonders by masking household sounds and creating a soothing atmosphere.”

Consider using white noise machines

As Xan mentioned above, white noise machines can be a game changer for child sleep. They help drown out household noises and create a consistent sound environment that can comfort babies. Katie from Slumber & Sprout also provided great information on the best techniques for noise control:

“We recommend the use of continuous white noise throughout the entire night and for all naps. Babies are used to noise. The womb is as loud as a vacuum cleaner, so to a baby, the sound of white noise is very soothing. We recommend using it at safe volumes of no louder than 50Db and positioned at least 2 meters away from your baby’s sleep space. You can download an app called “dB Meter” to test the dB level. As babies get older, the use of white noise is soothing but it’s also helpful in filtering out any noise disturbances (creaky floorboards, morning work alarms, dogs barking, traffic, etc.).”

Look for machines with adjustable volume settings and various sound options, such as ocean waves or gentle rain. You should also consider soundproofing options to promote a peaceful environment. Rugs and fabric wall hangings can be used to absorb sound, and door sweeps and weather stripping to block outside noise.

Safe bedding and mattress selection

Choosing the right bedding is vital to creating the perfect sleeping environment for your child. The team at Rockabye Rockies shared that “For babies ages 0-12 months old a safe sleep environment is critical for their safety and wellbeing. A crib with a firm mattress and no pillows, bumpers, stuffed animals, or cords nearby will prevent strangulation and suffocation.” With infants being especially vulnerable to safety concerns that arise with certain types of sleeping environments, ensure that you remain mindful and hyper-vigilant when creating their nursery!

Seemingly small factors can make a significant difference in your baby’s sleep. Dr. Summer Hartman from Newborn Sleep Company expresses that “Designing a newborn’s nursery with the perfect sleep environment is important for healthy development. To create a peaceful atmosphere, opt for soft, neutral colors, and a red night light and invest in a comfortable crib mattress.

I recommend Newton Mattress, Swaddle (Miracle Blanket), and using brown noise machines to mask external sounds. Consider placing the crib away from windows and doors to minimize disturbances. Using a firm, flat mattress that fits snugly in the crib to prevent any gaps and sticking with fitted sheets made of breathable materials creates a safe environment for your child. We also suggest reading reviews and choosing reputable brands that prioritize the safety of your little one.”

Use night lights to help your child sleep

As several of our stellar experts have mentioned above, investing in noise machines and night lights can make a big difference in figuring out how to set up a nursery room for your child’s sleep. “For older children ages 2+, I recommend adding a low voltage red or orange-hued nightlight to their bedroom. Developmentally, their imagination begins to introduce ideas like ghosts in the corner and monsters in the closet, so allowing them to see around the room after lights out can help alleviate these fears,” shared the team at Rockabye Rockies.

Khadijah from My Night Light elaborated on the use of night lights, adding that “Fear of the dark is one of the main reasons children often feel anxious at bedtime, especially when transitioning to sleeping on their own.

Creating a comforting atmosphere, including a warm light, can foster positive sleep experiences. Sleep specialists recommend using red light at night because it doesn’t disrupt sleep hormones like bright, blue-white lights can. Establish a sleep routine

While the room environment cannot be discounted when exploring how to set up a nursery room to optimize your child’s sleep, consistency is also vital. Establishing a sleep routine that follows the same steps each night is key to signaling to your baby that it’s time to wind down.

Dr. Aubrie, founder of Sleepfull Baby suggests that you “avoid screens, bright lights, and overstimulation before bed, and try to stick to a regular, early bedtime. Including a consistent bedtime routine is also essential in establishing healthy sleep habits over time. A warm bath, a gentle massage, stories, or lullabies are all you need to help signal that it’s time to sleep. The perfect sleep environment is safe, cozy, and promotes restorative sleep.”

“On the 7 pm to 7 am Sleeping Baby Routine, the ideal sleep setup evolves as your child moves from newborn to toddler.

0-3 months: Create a quiet, dark bedroom, and use a sleep position in which you swaddle your infant and tuck them into a Moses basket or crib with a cellular blanket. Ensure that the room temperature is 18-21 degrees Celsius.

4-8 months: Maintain a quiet and blacked-out bedroom, alter their sleeping position to a sleeping bag in a cot, and keep the room temperature between 18-21 degrees Celsius.

8 months – 2 years: Ensure a quiet room and draw the curtains. Place your child in a sleeping bag and comforter to settle for the night. It’s recommended to introduce a nightlight or wake-up clock at 2 years of age.”

How to use Pay With Rewards

To use the Pay With Rewards redemption option, you must first enroll an eligible Discover card online or in the Discover app. Then, at checkout, follow these steps:
