As many GRS readers know, last year I quit my job to become a full-time freelancer. The hardest thing about moving on was leaving coworkers like Roger White, a magazine editor and author of the funniest interoffice e-mails ever. Roger and I teamed up to bring you his story about a recent experience paying for an auto repair, along with tactical advice about how to dispute your mechanic bill.
Roger
Our little family was tooling along this year, struggling to stay within our monthly budget while juggling life’s big-ticket items—you know: braces, countless teenage daughter items, summer camp fees times number of children squared, etc., etc.—when the two most feared words in all of suburbia’s lexicon knocked us flat.
Car repair.
Funny thing is, it all started with just a broken brake light. I’m sitting in my wife’s car at a stop light, waiting to turn right, when a smiling woman pulls up next to me and says, “Hey, your right rear light is out. Better get it fixed, ’cause the cops will stop you for that.”
Instant adrenaline panic overdrive. The cops! Where?
Ever since I was a teenager, having a cop stop me for any reason has always struck fear deep in my heart, even when I was doing absolutely nothing wrong. Readers of a certain age will remember the CSNY lyric: “Like looking in my mirror and seeing a police car!”
So the wife and I promptly hightailed it over to our nearest franchise fix-it shop, thinking that a broken rear light costs, what, five bucks maybe?
Hah. The franchise fix-it shop guys saw us coming a mile away. I should have known. I can’t think of any other scenario where I feel so much like a life-sized walking all-day sucker than talking with the mechanic man. I’m thinking I’m not alone on this.
I believe that auto repair types begin sizing you up for the big squeeze the minute you walk in the door.
“Hello, sir, I see you and your wife have a Honda V6.”
“Uh, yes.”
“Does your model have the actuated re-inverter or self-regulating?”
“What?” Off guard, I blurt, “Actuated, I think. Really, we just need a brake light…”
“Uh oh. Actuated.”
(The other guy behind the counter sadly shakes his head at this point. The choreography is keen and well-executed, I must say.)
Still, I play along, because I don’t know enough about cars to bluff them, and they know that I don’t know. Furthermore, I know that they know I don’t know. You know?
Dang, I should have said self-regulating. We’re already off on the wrong foot.
“Well, it may be self-regulating, I’m not sure.”
“No, you said actuated.”
“Is that going to be a problem?” I ask.
“Depends. What are you in for?”
“Busted rear light.”
“Hmmmm.”
More head shaking. Some computer clacking, looking in reference manuals.
We left the car with the fix-it shop crew, said three quick Hail Marios to the Great Grease Gods, hoped and prayed for the best, and went about our day. I tried Googling “re-inverter,” but all I got was something about how to design a death-ray gun. When we got the call that the car was ready, we swallowed our gum, put on our all-day sucker heads, and made our way back to the garage. A different guy behind the counter gave us a bill that was a good 25% over the estimate. On the bill was a hefty item—I kid you not—that was labeled “service fee,” on top of labor, parts, tax, recycling charges, oil disposal fee, and all the rest.
My wife, always the braver of us, questioned this item, noting that the estimate was much less than the sum before us.
“This is way over what you said,” Sue said right out loud, turning all heads in the shop. I cringed. In a western movie, this was one of those moments where the piano player stopped playing and the saloon grew deathly silent. “What is this service charge?”
I expected another stern, condescending talking-to about how variable fluctuations in the world of auto parts derivatives combined with the situation in Libya, hourly swings in crude oil prices, and our particular vehicle’s unfortunate re-inverter configuration all coalesced in the time it took to repair our rear brake light to necessitate an additional service charge. But the guy looked at the bill, looked at my wife, and said, “Huh. Don’t know what that is. I’ll take it off.”
Booiiiinnng. That was the sound of my brain leaping out of my skull and bouncing on the floor. How many people, I wondered as I chased my brain across the floor, pay this “service charge” without a second thought?
April
Repairs are one of the costs that come with car ownership, but it sure is confusing when you don’t speak the lingo. When I go to the repair shop, I’m on the phone with my dad the whole time, repeating everything the mechanic says to my father, then repeating everything my dad says to the mechanic. I should just hand the mechanic my phone and cut myself out of the equation.
Like Roger, I probably wouldn’t dispute my bill, either. I know how anti-GRS that sounds, but I’m being honest. I hate making a scene, and I’m likely to assume it’s my own ignorance about cars that’s the problem, not the service charge.
Obviously, Sue is the one who’s got it right. If a charge looks wrong, you should ask about it. This doesn’t necessarily mean the shop is trying to cheat you — mechanics are human and they can make honest mistakes. How do you make sure you’re being billed fairly? I did some digging and found the following advice for those of us who aren’t so mechanically inclined:
Check to see if your car is under warranty. If it is, you’ll need to take it to the dealer or an authorized repair facility.
Find a good auto shop. Ask coworkers, friends, and neighbors where they take their vehicles for repairs. Is the shop affiliated with AAA or does it have technicians certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE)? Do you like the look of the place (clean, organized, etc.)?
Ask for a written estimate before the work starts. It’s not uncommon for the actual bill to be 10-20% higher, or more if the mechanic finds that the problem is more complicated.
Ask for the mechanic to review your bill with you. It might seem tedious, but it can save you money, as Roger found out. Mistakes happen all of the time. Compare the charges with your estimate.
If you have a bad feeling about the work performed, dispute your bill carefully. If you can’t find a resolution, ask for the old parts (should you need evidence) and take your dispute, in writing, through the chain of command. If necessary, you might turn to the Better Business Bureau or, as a last resort, legal action.
Finally, if you’re happy with the service you receive, become a regular, preferably at a local body shop. From Edmunds.com:
“The one-on-one relationship between driver and mechanic that smaller repair shops foster can really help consumers have confidence in both the work that’s performed and in the vehicle itself. Local mechanics are more willing to help you understand how your car performs and what it needs. You can ask to look under the hood or the chassis with your local mechanic, and perhaps learn something about what goes where or why a service needs to be performed.”
In other words, you might feel a little less clueless each time you bring in your car.

Meanwhile, back at the franchise fix-it shop…
“By the way,” says the mechanic, “you need new struts. They’re bleeding onto your brakes. That’s about $600 without tax.”
Flush with new confidence instilled by wifey, I took my turn. “Oh, no you don’t. I know how you guys operate. Struts. No such thing as struts, I bet.”
I got some looks of approval from some of the other guy customers as we walked out of the shop. I think they were looks of approval, anyway. I had a bit of difficulty getting my all-day sucker-head in the car, but we drove away with a bit of salvaged pride. Struts, indeed.
“Hey, what’s that noise, hon?”

What we didn’t like about it
When using the Plant Pots Set of 3 Pack 10 inch, we noticed a few aspects that could be improved. Firstly, the imitation wine barrel design was a bit too artificial, making it look a bit cheap and not as realistic as we would have liked. Additionally, the plastic material was not as durable as we had hoped, and we noticed some cracking after just a few weeks of use. While the drainage holes and saucer were appreciated, we felt that the overall quality of the pots could be improved.
To make the Plant Pots Set of 3 Pack 10 inch even better, we suggest using a more realistic and natural-looking design that is more in line with the aesthetic of a real wine barrel. Additionally, using a more durable material would help to prevent cracking and ensure that the pots last for a longer period of time. What we didn’t like about it
When it comes to the HC Companies 20 Inch Eclipse Round Planter with Saucer, we were disappointed by the lack of drainage holes. Without proper drainage, excess water can accumulate at the bottom of the pot, potentially drowning your plants or causing root rot. While the saucer is a nice addition, it doesn’t necessarily solve the drainage problem. Additionally, the plastic material of the pot can feel flimsy and cheap. We recommend looking for a planter with adequate drainage and a sturdier construction.

Firstly, the set is not made from the most durable materials, which can make it susceptible to damage over time. Additionally, the planter tray isn’t waterproof, which can lead to water damage on surfaces it’s placed on. Lastly, the planters themselves are on the smaller side, which may not be sufficient for those who want to grow larger herbs or plants. The 2.5″ diameter and 9″ height may be disappointing for those expecting a larger plant to fill a space. Additionally, the instructions for care were not very detailed, which could be problematic for those who are new to caring for orchids. We recommend providing more detailed instructions or a care guide to ensure the longevity of the plant. Overall, while the plant itself is lovely, we suggest that those looking for a larger indoor plant explore other options.
Buyers Guide

FAQ
Q: How do I choose the right planter for my plants?
A: When choosing a planter, consider the following three criteria: size, material, and drainage. First, make sure the planter is the appropriate size for your plant, allowing enough room for it to grow. Second, choose a material that will suit your plant’s needs – for example, terracotta is great for plants that require a dry soil environment. Finally, ensure the planter has adequate drainage holes to prevent water buildup, which can harm your plants.
Q: Can I use any type of planter for indoor plants?
A: While many types of planters can be used for indoor plants, it’s important to choose one that’s appropriate for your plant’s specific needs. Consider the amount of light and humidity in the room, as well as your plant’s size and watering requirements.
Q: What are some benefits of using self-watering planters?
A: Self-watering planters can be a great option for those who don’t have the time or ability to water their plants regularly. These planters have a built-in reservoir that provides water to the plant as needed, allowing for longer periods between watering. Additionally, self-watering planters can help prevent overwatering, which can be damaging to your plants.
Q: Are there any eco-friendly options for planters?
A: Yes! There are many eco-friendly options for planters, such as those made from recycled materials or natural fibers. Additionally, you can consider repurposing items such as old teapots or mason jars to use as planters.
Q: How can I choose a planter that will complement my home decor?
A: When choosing a planter, consider the style of your home and the aesthetic you’re going for. If you have a modern, minimalist home, a simple white ceramic planter may be a good option. If you prefer a more bohemian look, a woven basket planter could be a great choice. Ultimately, choose a planter that you love and that will bring joy to your space.

A major way to use denim in interior design is as an upholstery fabric for a big furniture piece like a sofa, chair, or headboard. In addition to being durable, denim has various options in terms of colors, thickness, and elasticity, and the fabric is a unique way to make a statement. Bull Denim is 100% cotton and a common type used for home décor upholstery. If you’re looking for a noncommittal and more flexible option, try denim as a cover instead.
To use denim tastefully on your couch, opt for a very dark color and a modern frame. These details can transform it from looking like an amateur DIY project to a luxury piece, especially with a more elegant theme. Instead of remembering your old jeans when you look at the sofa, it’ll feel more natural in the space. Note that not all denim materials are easy to clean or good for moisture exposure, so consider your climate and the amount of use your furniture piece is going to get.
While money may not be everything, there’s no denying that having plenty of money gives you more options, and offers access to lifestyles that are out of reach for those with more limited resources. But what if you don’t have a lot of money? Can you still look like you do? The answer is yes. In this article, we’ll delve into some ways people look rich even if they aren’t.
1. Luxury Accessories
Wearing simple clothes made with good quality is one way of appearing better off than you are. Lots of name-brand or quality clothes can be found second-hand, on thrifting websites, or marked down when they’re out of season. Another option is to have luxury and name brand accessories: you could save up for an expensive watch, sunglasses, or purse. Just a few accessories can elevate your whole outfit and give the impression of wealth even if the rest of your appearance is unremarkable.
One Redditor commented, “Overrated expensive clothes. Mark Zuckerberg wears a t-shirt and jeans on an ordinary day.”
2. Pointless Loans
Taking Taking loans to look rich is the worst and most dangerous way to look rich because it can lead you to financial trouble, can easily land you in jail, and the stress of loads or credit card debt can cause health problems such as stress, anxiety, and depression. Taking out loans to fund a lavish lifestyle can create the illusion of wealth and furnish you with some expensive personal property, but it’s a risky strategy that can lead to debt and financial instability.
3. Expensive Groceries
While some people may believe that buying groceries at expensive stores is a way to look rich, it’s not a recommended approach. Despite the premium products offered by high-end grocery stores, they come with higher price tags that can quickly strain your budget. Instead, with a little practice and skill, you can learn to make great foods with the same ingredients at a cheaper price, using food from regular grocery stores and just one or two expensive ingredients. Prioritizing budget and health needs, shopping smartly, and seeking out deals and discounts where possible are better strategies for achieving financial stability and good nutrition.
One Redditor said, “I have a friend who is thousands of dollars in debt and she will only shop at expensive grocery stores, buy organic foods, and only buy name-brand foods/ items. She refuses to listen to me when I tell her to buy store brands and shop at places like Aldi/ TJ.”
4. Expensive Restaurants
Going to expensive restaurants is a common way for people to create the impression of wealth, and it makes sense because expensive restaurants have luxurious surroundings and high class wait staff in addition to the good food. But despite all that, expensive restaurants get very pricey, very quickly. While some people may associate fine dining with affluence, others may see it as an indulgent and unnecessary expense.
Cooking at home can also be a more cost-effective and healthier option, as it allows for greater control over ingredients and portion sizes. Or simply dine out less often, and use the money you’ve saved by cooking for yourself to afford the occasional dinner at a fancier place.
5. Luxury Cars
Driving luxury cars that you can’t afford in order to look rich is not a wise or sustainable way to manage your finances. It may create a false impression of wealth or status, but ultimately, cars are a depreciating asset and you’ll be paying for maintenance no matter which vehicle you own. Instead of focusing on material possessions and trying to impress others, prioritize financial responsibility and drive something which won’t cost you more than you can afford. If you are considering taking on significant debt to maintain the appearance of wealth, it’s important to reconsider your priorities and focus on building a strong financial foundation for yourself.
6. Expensive Tech
Technology has become an integral part of daily life and using expensive gadgets and devices is a popular way to create an impression of wealth. However, it’s crucial to understand that unless you have a way to pay for your expensive phone, computer, etc., it’s really not sustainable nor healthy for showcasing your financial status. Buying pricey technology may give you a temporary ego boost, it’s not an authentic way to display one’s wealth.
7. Excessive Gambling
Using excessive gambling as a means to appear wealthy is both impractical and generally harmful. Gambling can be an enjoyable form of entertainment, but it should be practiced in moderation and with responsible limits. When gambling becomes excessive, it can result in financial difficulties and addiction. This behavior does not genuinely showcase one’s wealth, instead, it can lead to significant financial losses and a damaged reputation. Additionally, it can impact personal relationships, work productivity, and overall mental and emotional well-being.
8. Upscale Neighborhood
Living in an expensive neighborhood is a widespread trend, but it is not a sustainable or healthy if you’re just doing it to appear well off. Buying a house you can’t afford is a very risky situation, and it’s tough to get out of. It’s crucial to make wise financial decisions based on personal needs and priorities. While living in an upscale neighborhood can provide a social status and prestige, it should not be the sole basis for one’s self-worth.
9. Good Haircut
Beyond just buying expensive products, something as simple as having a really well-styled haircut and good personal grooming can make you appear better off than you are. Get to know a good hair stylist, and then practice styling your hair at home until you’re able to do it well. Keeping your personal appearance clean, simple and elegant can go a long ways towards helping people perceive you as well-off.
10. Presenting Yourself with Poise
And last but not least something as simple as having good poise when you meet people, interact with coworkers, and talk with new friends can help others to perceive you as having more money than you do. Having good posture and acting with quiet confidence tends to make people think you are a confident person, and can even give people the idea that you have plenty of money. Practice walking with good posture, and having open, friendly mannerisms when you converse with others. Your poise and confidence will have people believe that you’ve never wanted for anything a day in your life.

‘Tis the season of cold weather, hot chocolate, carols and Christmas. The holidays are upon us, and it’s time to pick the best type of Christmas tree for you. Whether you’re a before-or-after-Thanksgiving holiday decorator, picking the right tree for your apartment can make the holiday season truly magical.
A few things to consider first: Do you have overactive cats? How often can you water it? Are you going out of town for the holidays? Do you like heavy ornaments or minimally decorated trees? How much will you spend on the perfect tree? How much space do you have?
Take this quiz to find out what Christmas tree you should pick up this holiday.
What’s your decorating style in your apartment?
What movie describes your holidays best?
What does your Christmas day look like?
What lifestyle best describes you right now?
When does the Christmas season really start?
What’s your favorite Christmas song?
What Is the Best Type of Christmas Tree for Me?
Artificial Christmas tree
Not everyone’s family is ready to take care of a real-life tree, and that’s OK! An artificial Christmas tree allows you to start earlier in the season without worrying about shedding or disposing of the tree. An artificial tree is excellent for those who travel out of state for the holidays and want to keep the house decorated. Splurge on one of the pre-lit ones: You won’t regret it.
Fraser fir tree
The ultimate Christmas tree! The fraser fir brings the fragrance and greenery we all connect back to the holidays. It’s bright and green yet soft enough for young kids and pets to be around it. The fraser fir is one of the sturdiest trees, perfect for the ornaments you hold so dearly. The shape is classic, a triangle with enough branch gaps for lights and big ornaments. If you follow many Christmas traditions but are looking for durability through the season, this quintessential tree is for you.
Colorado blue spruce
If you’re looking for the most stunning Christmas tree, look no further than the Colorado blue spruce. The tree’s foliage changes from a blueish-gray to a silver blue depending on the light. It’s almost as if they are covered in snow. Hang white and gold ornaments from its very strong branches to let the tree’s color sing. It’s also a favorite because of its light shedding. However, make sure the tree is out of reach of children, pets and clumsy folks. The needles are very sharp, so it’s best to wear gloves while decorating them.
Balsam fir
The balsam fir is another classic pick. You’ll often see this one as part of garlands, wreaths and other holiday decorations that incorporate greenery. That’s thanks to its soft, flat needles and branches that work great at staying flat. Balsam fir trees are native to the north of the U.S. Also, if tree fragrance is a must on your list, the balsam fir won’t disappoint. This one requires a bit more care than other varieties as it needs to be kept away from any heating source or drying environment (hard in the winter!), as it will dry out quickly and not make it to Christmas. They can retain their needles for up to four weeks if cared for correctly.
White fir
The gorgeous white fir tree is adorned with white and blue-green needles. Since you’re headed out into the travel craziness of the holidays, this Christmas tree is the best fit for you. White fir trees tolerate neglect, so don’t fret if you cannot water them. This tree has the prettiest pyramid shape, great needle retention and a strong fragrance. As opposed to other pines, this tree has a lovely lemon smell when you crush its needles in your hand — it would go great with a garland of dried oranges and light ornaments as its needles grow upwards on the branch. Get to the tree lot early in the season, as these are the first ones to go.
Eastern white pine
Eastern white pine trees are very tall, with long, thin needles that grow up to five inches in length. This is one of the largest pine trees in the market, so make sure you have space for it. Get a wreath or two to pair up with the tree. They aren’t the sturdiest trees, so keep your decor to a minimum or use garlands or felt ornaments. Let the beautiful, feathery branches take the stage! If you aim for a minimal yet captivating look with your Christmas tree, the eastern white pine is it.
Scotch pine
Whenever you see a Christmas tree farm, most likely it’s a field of bright green Scotch pine trees. These trees are often harvested by permit, so you can cut them down yourself. You’re a DIY-er, and what better feeling than cutting your own Christmas joy. Just make sure to wear gloves when handling it, as this tree’s needles are as sharp as actual needles. But the good news is that even when the Scotch pine is drying, it won’t drop any needles, so you can keep your space clean. They are very sturdy, so they will safely hold your heirloom ornaments in their branches. Make sure you pick the best ones, as you won’t have much room between branches.
Noble fir
The noble fir makes a statement. This is the tree for your tall ceilings — think cathedral, office lobby or foyer of your home. Noble firs come with blue-green needles, sturdy branches and even cones. Think a 12-foot, full-bodied Christmas tree for the season. In nature, these giants can reach almost 300 feet tall. Due to its stature, the noble fir doesn’t need many ornaments to stand out. Pair it with some fresh noble fir wreaths and simple twinkle lights.
The world as we know it has completely changed in just a matter of days. This has resulted in many of us learning a new skill set to effectively work from home or how to socially distance ourselves. As citizens of the United States, we are all in this together (just as Ashley Tisdale’s TikTok says!).
For the population of Americans who have been working from
home for years, please skip to part two of this post. For those of us who are
new to this concept, I wanted to share tips that I have gotten from some of my
favorite bloggers, as this is my first time working from home. Here are a few
of my favorite take-aways:
Working from home tips:
Keep your routine.
Yes, you are not going into your office
anymore, however, you should keep your routine of you 8-hour day. If you
normally begin your day in the office at 9am stick to that time and begin
working at 9am. This will help keep some normalcy in your routine that your
body is already accustomed to. Try to also wake up and go to bed at the same
time.
Dedicate a separate place for eating, working, and sleeping.
This may sound easier than you think.
However, think back to your high school or even college when you would relax in
your room, do homework in your room, eat in your room, etc. My bet is that you
were not very productive when doing homework, or maybe even had trouble
sleeping. This is why separating the areas is important. Also, you still
technically are “going to work” this way!
Get ready every day.
When I was younger, my mom always said “look
good, feel good, do good.” What she meant by this was that when you dress up
you feel better about yourself and in return you have a positive &
productive day. This is something that I live by. Try to take note of what
clothes make you feel the most productive and replicate that!
Dani Austin states “business on the top, party on the bottom”.
When you are working from home, team meetings
are done through video or audio. If you don’t want to completely get ready for
the day, just get ready “on the top” and keep your sweatpants or leggings on.
Plan your days.
Keeping yourself organized will help in the long run. Also, creating list of to-dos and crossing off the things that you have done will allow you to share your productivity easily with co-workers when asked. If you need a source to stay organized, Trello is a great place to start!
General everyday tips:
We have been hearing through multiple sources, “don’t go out
unless you need to”, but as social beings, this is easier said than done. Here
are a few tips that I have found to be helpful.
Stay or become active daily.
With gyms being closed and the weather getting nicer, use this time to look at the world as your gym. Get outside and breathe the fresh air. You can track your activity and donate to those less fortunate by downloading “Charity Miles” on your phone. This will allow you to track your daily activity and donate to a charity of your choice. “Fresh air will do you good.”
Support your local small businesses.
Yes, Starbucks may be your favorite coffee
and it sure is delicious, however, that mom and pop shop down the road from a
franchise is going to suffer a little more than larger corporations. Your mom
and pop coffee shop will appreciate you taking the time to support their
business.
Read a book.
Easier for those who love to read, however,
if you have always wanted to get into reading this is a perfect time. Start
small and set a daily goal for yourself.
Learn something new.
Listen to podcasts, sign up for Skill Share, or simply put time into something that you have always wanted to do or learn. Before you know it, you will be a pro.
Spring Cleaning.
You have been given the perfect opportunity
to use time to spring clean your home. Get rid of things that you no longer
need or want.
While this change is going to take time to get used to,
remember to reach out to friends and family that you cannot be around at the
moment. Only time will tell if the actions we are taking now are going to be
beneficial in the future. However, to keep us sane, I hope everyone found these
tips helpful. Stay positive and be kind to others, we will get through these
times.
Extras:
Think about the content you are consuming.
Upbeat music. Playlist suggestion here!
Watch your favorite feel good movies & TV shows.
Thank medical professionals.
They go to work every day to save lives. We
can all stay home to help them out.
Be kind to everyone.
Everyone had their lives turned upside down
in different ways. Seniors in high school and college, those that had to put
off large life events, it is different for everyone.
Stay healthy and safe everyone.

We’re kicking off the week with a peek at our soon-to-be living room! I’m pleased to report construction on our house is picking up. Drywall is about to go in – which means our vision will finally start coming to life. The progress definitely has me dreaming of the final product and how I’m going to furnish it. This week I’m getting pointers on our living room from one of my all time faves – Justina Blakaney. I know this girl can stretch my aesthetic and convince me to consider some decor pieces that are outside my typical modernist comfort zone.
To refresh, here’s what the living room looked like when we found it. Stunning right?! Ha! Those floors are vinyl, the chandelier plastic, the fireplace faux and the ceiling raspberry pink! Good stuff.
But the bones of the room are spectacular. The crown molding, the high ceilings and all the natural light gave us a lot to work with. We decided to simply improve upon them by making the space conducive to modern living. This is our new layout:
I wanted the living room to feel open, warm and serve as the hub of the house, so we actually removed a couple of walls, connecting the space to both the kitchen and the den. The new layout creates a fantastic flow. Now it’s just a matter of creating a design that only builds upon that inviting feeling. I know Justina has the perfect pointers to do just that!
Justina’s Designer Take: For this room, I took what I know of Erin’s clean, modern and sophisticated aesthetic, sprinkled in a few pieces from the African continent and some elements that scream the 60’s. The color palette is controlled focusing on earth tones and whites–and of course I had to add in a bit of green because that’s my jungalow vibe :D. For Erin and her growing family, I see a home that is equal parts comfy and chic with a down-to-earth quality to it–because that’s how I see Erin!

While I tend to beeline straight for the mid-century modern, Justina offers a great reminder to look out for those unique pieces that will inject some unexpected character into your room. I’m loving the idea of mixing and matching genres and time periods to create a truly collected comfortable space. It really does pay to hold out for that truly perfect piece. While it can be tough for me to be patient, when it comes to designing our house the treasure hunt is going to be half the fun!

I used to be guilty of spending money on the life I thought I lived, rather than the life I was actually living. To illustrate what I mean, consider the following past expenditures:
Snowboarding apparel, for my first and only snowboarding trip to date.
Evening dresses from Bluefly.com. Yes, they were purchased at a big discount, but I had nowhere to wear them!
A mountain bike. I was so dedicated to riding, for about three months.
Last week I read an article on the Psychology Today blog titled “What You Do Every Day Matters More Than What You Do Once In a While.” Written by Gretchen Rubin, author of The Happiness Project, the main point of the article is that people are happiest when they make decisions based on their daily life, not the life they lead every once in awhile. From the article:
In his fascinating book, House Lust, Daniel McGinn notes that market researchers use the term maximum-use imperative to describe the fact that people will often buy something to accommodate a use that they need only rarely…Along the same lines, I’ve noticed that when making decisions, I tend to give too much thought to what I do once in a while and not enough weight to what I do every day. For example, I wear running shoes 29 days out of 30 days a month, yet I have three pairs of black flats and only one pair of running shoes.
Maximum-use imperative doesn’t just affect happiness, though, it also affects your bottom line.
Buying For Someone Else’s Life
It struck me that spending money on the things I used to do once in awhile was a large part of why I wasn’t saving money, or at least spending on the things that really mattered, and yes, that led to a lot of unhappiness.
For example, as mentioned earlier, I used to buy clothing for someone else’s lifestyle. I had clothes for snowboarding, cocktail parties, and mountain biking. I had several winter coats and countless pairs of gloves, and I live in Texas. Who knows how much I spent over the years, buying new apparel every time a new hobby interested me or picking up a little black dress without so much as an event on my calendar? Not only was the money wasted, but it also chipped away at my happiness. I had a closet full of clothes and nothing to actually wear. I also had to look at the result of my spending habits every morning when I got dressed, which only made me feel bad.
Then one day I’d had enough. I started cleaning out my closet and pared it down so much that my husband and I now use the same small closet — a huge accomplishment if you knew me 10 years ago! (If you’re interested, you can read more on my process and how I’ve maintained a streamlined wardrobe in a previous GRS post.) I’m not perfect in this regard, but I do ask myself if I’ll really wear something before I buy it, and I walk away more often than not, which surprisingly feels pretty good.
House Rich, Lifestyle Poor
Another example of maximum-use imperative is the person who buys too much house so he can host the entire family during the holidays. This isn’t far-fetched; I know more than one person who has done it. It’s a lovely sentiment to want your entire family under one roof, and a gracious thing to offer to host them, but if you’re a family of three and you buy enough house to accommodate 15-plus people, that’s a huge expense you’ll pay all because of a few days during the holiday season. The mortgage payments will be higher, not to mention taxes, interest, insurance, utilities, and then the time (or money) spent to clean a larger house.
Instead, if you think about your family’s daily needs and go with a smaller house, you’ll have more options, which might include the following:
Moving somewhere more central (paying for location instead of square footage)
Paying off your mortgage faster
Buying a smaller house and using the extra money to travel
Saving the money you’d spend on a larger house for long-term goals, retirement, and other investments
On a day-to-day basis, one of those options will probably make you much happier. Then, during those few days of the year when family is in town, you can find a way to make things work. Better to structure your life and your spending around the other 362 days of the year.
Invest in Your Real Life
I just returned from a trip to Italy and Spain, and I was tempted more than once by a great sweater or scarf that I saw in a shop window. One of my travel companions said, “You’re here, just get it so you won’t think about it later.” I thought about it for a second, and then I remembered that I have more than enough sweaters and scarves and decided I’d rather spend the money on tickets to a museum or a round of churros and chocolate, or maybe just save it toward the next trip.
As Rubin writes, “…we’re happiest when our decisions most closely match our natures and our values,” and that’s definitely applicable to our spending decisions. Instead of spending money on the things you use once in awhile, ask yourself how often you’ll need something before you buy it. Then invest in your day-to-day life, not your fantasy life.
If you’re putting in the effort of researching companies, deciphering ESG scores and choosing investments, you probably want to know what your dollars are actually doing.
I’ve long wished for an app that would tell you exactly how many polar bears you’re saving with X number of dollars in ESG investments. Unfortunately, ESG statistics and impact reports don’t deal in polar bears.
Measuring ESG’s output of good is tricky. “Good” is not necessarily a concept we all agree on. Plus, to show how a company is doing, ESG uses numerical scores that are not easily deciphered.
Here’s one example: A major energy drink manufacturer had an ESG score of 0. The company massively reduced the amount of forced labor in its supply chain thanks to shareholder interventions, says Andrew Behar, CEO of As You Sow, a nonprofit working to increase corporate environmental and social responsibility.
Reducing forced labor was overwhelmingly better for the brand, and the return on investment outweighed the cost of implementing new practices. Much of the focus of making this change was on improving the company’s ESG score (which went from 0 to 26 out of 100), but the result was a significant reduction in forced labor.
Greenwashing and ESG
How do you assign a number to positive impact? There are a few ways, such as pounds of carbon prevented from entering the atmosphere, or dollars donated to charity, but even those numbers can be misleading. Those misleading, or sometimes entirely false, claims are called greenwashing.
Many automated financial advisers, or robo-advisers, now offer impact portfolios. Those portfolios are typically made up of exchange-traded funds built along certain themes, such as investing in clean energy. A few say they donate to charities. But several of these funds haven’t donated a dollar.
ESG is a grading system that can be used to combat greenwashing by providing quantitative data. But since the term “ESG” isn’t regulated, that can cause even more confusion.
“We did a report where we noticed that there were 90 mutual funds with ESG in their name, and 60 of them got a D or an F on ESG from us,” says Behar. “So we did an analysis of their prospectuses. The bottom line is that the prospectus language is in no way correlated to the holdings, and no way correlated to the [fund] name.”
What are your impact dollars doing?
If you’re trying to figure out what the overall good output is from ESG, you may be searching for a long time. Those numbers don’t exist (at least not yet). What does exist are examples of individual companies slowly making change over time.
A single company decreasing the amount of forced labor in its supply chain due to ESG and shareholder advocacy is indisputably good — and that’s not the only example out there.
ESG guidelines, and the people who use them, have led to large-scale reductions in pesticide use, increased sustainability programs and increased diversity within company workforces.
Many of those companies also saw increases to their bottom lines alongside the ESG-inspired changes they made. So, yes, ESG does actually create serious, measurable good.
And while you may not be able to get a dollar-to-net-impact metric just yet, that doesn’t mean that ESG isn’t worth investing in. ESG innovations are popping up all the time that help everyday investors make better choices.
Some exchange-traded funds now have a feature that automatically removes companies that fall outside of the bounds of set ESG levels, says Alexandra Mihailescu Cichon, chief commercial officer of RepRisk, an ESG data science company.
Don’t lose hope
Amid what can feel like trickery and highly targeted marketing, what are well-intentioned investors to do? Keep the faith.
“I think we’re in a stage where we’re in a bit of a transition between the era of commitments and pledges,” Cichon says. “And now we’ve moved on to the next era, which is more about execution of all of these commitments. And then, as part of that execution, that is really about measuring that impact and seeing whether it actually effects the change.”
This era of change has come about because investors have demanded more from the companies they invest in. Despite the greenwashing and politics, the landscape and popularity of ESG investments have changed dramatically. Massive amounts of money have poured into sustainable investments over the last few years.
This, more than anything, has sent a clear message that investors are fed up with business practices that do more harm than good. And the outrage at the lack of transparency surrounding those practices reinforces that investors will continue to hold businesses accountable until they start seeing real change. And maybe even save some polar bears.
