One of the rights afforded to us under the Fair Credit Reporting Act is the ability to challenge information on our credit reports with which we do not agree. I addressed several methods of disputing credit entries in this Mint article.
The credit dispute process is free and normally takes less than a month. There is some confusion, however, about the impact a credit dispute can have on your credit scores. In this post, we’ll cover what happens when you dispute a credit report, how a credit dispute impacts your credit score, what is disputable, and how you can do so.
When Can I Dispute a Credit Report?
When you file a dispute with the credit reporting agencies, they are required by the Fair Credit Reporting Act to show that the item is “in dispute.” They accomplish this by placing the code “XB” on the offensive credit entry.
The XB code is what’s referred to in my world as a “Compliance Condition Code.” When it’s placed in your credit report, it reads as “Consumer disputes, investigation in process” or some derivative of that wording.
Essentially, it means that the credit bureaus received your dispute and are actively investigating the information.
The Impact of “XB”
When the XB code is present on an account, a public record, or a collection, credit scoring systems treat it differently than they would if the account was not actively in dispute.
This is where the confusion comes from. The FICO score will not allow an item that is actively being disputed to harm your score. How does it accomplish this?
FICO will not consider an item with the XB code present for either its Payment History or Debt related measurements. So, if you have a credit card account with late payments and you’re disputing those late payments, the FICO score will choose not to consider those late payments. And, if you have a credit card account with a large balance and you’re disputing the balance, the FICO score will not consider the balance.
So, does disputing a credit report hurt your score? No. The act of disputing items on your credit report does not hurt your score. However, the outcome of the dispute could cause your score to adjust. If the “negative” item is verified to be correct, for example, your score might take a dip. Note: this dip is not because the dispute was proven inaccurate, but because the XB code is taken off. Alternatively, if the disputed item is proven to be inaccurate, this could raise your credit score.
The fact that the FICO score is temporarily ignoring these items can cause your scores to be higher. Having said that, the score improvement is temporary and can’t be used to “game” the system.
What happens if the disputed item is found to be accurate?
If the item has been verified as accurate, then the credit bureaus are no longer investigating it. That means the credit bureaus will remove the “in dispute” label by removing the XB code.
Once the XB code is gone, then the item is fair game in the eyes of FICO because it has been verified and is, arguably, accurate.
This process isn’t news, and lenders also know about it, which is why you can’t just go and dispute everything that’s bad on your credit reports, have your FICO scores shoot through the roof, and then go apply for a loan.
Most lenders, especially mortgage lenders, require that all items DO NOT have the “in dispute” label before they process an application to closing. They realize the score that has been calculated is likely not the consumer’s most accurate score because the model is ignoring certain aspects of the credit report.
And FICO isn’t the only scoring system that has this specialized treatment of items that are currently being investigated. If you check your credit score using the VantageScore model, you may run into a similar situation.
According to Sarah Davies, Vice President of Analytics and Product Management at VantageScore Solutions, “While an account is documented as ‘Account information disputed by consumer under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (XB)’, it is temporarily excluded from consideration by the VantageScore model.”
What if the item is still being disputed?
If you were not successful getting the offensive credit entry removed or changed, then you can still have it shown as being “in dispute” for as long as it remains on your credit reports. But, that is not the same as an item that’s in dispute AND being investigated.
That is to say, lenders will still likely consider the item when evaluating your credit score since the XB code has been removed.
If you still disagree with an item you can have a label added to your credit reports showing as much. But, that’s not going to cause the score to reflect that label for Payment History and Debt measurements.
How to Dispute a Charge on Your Credit Report
If, after reviewing what happens when you dispute a credit report, you decide it could be the right course of action for you, here’s how you can get the ball rolling.
Step One: Obtain a recent copy of your credit report
In order to dispute an item on your credit report, you’ll need to prove to the powers that be that your credit report is inaccurate. To do so, you’ll want to have a copy of your credit report handy. Consumers are entitled to one free credit report each year from each of the three main credit reporting agencies, which you can access through AnnualCreditReport.com. Or if you’re a Mint user, you can easily view your credit score in the Mint app whenever you please!
Once you’ve got your credit report in front of you, pull out that red pen of yours and notate any items on the report that are inaccurate or with which you do not agree.
- There is incorrect personal information on your credit report, such as your name or Social Security Number
- There is a negative item that is beyond the statute of limitations for reporting
- The report shows that you carry a debt balance which you have already settled
- There is duplicate information shown on your credit report
- You have a duplicate credit report or mixed information for yourself and another person
- There are fraudulent items on your report, like a new credit card or loan that you did not open or apply for
Step Three: Decide which credit dispute method to use
File a report with the credit bureau: This is the most common method consumers use to dispute credit reports. Each of the credit reporting bureaus—Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion—have dispute forms on their website which you can fill out.
Here’s where you can find them:
If the error appears across each of the credit bureaus’ reports, you’ll need to file a separate report for each. Each of the credit dispute processes vary slightly, but in general, you’ll need to include the dispute form with an explanation of the error(s) as well as a copy of your report with the same error(s) notated.
Report the error to the furnisher: Another method you can use to dispute a debt on your credit report is to go directly to the source—the lender, bank, credit card company, or collection agency that misreported information. When you dispute the item, the furnisher will then be required to report the dispute to each of the credit bureaus, making your job a little easier.

I want to start my Fetch Rewards review with some basic information about the company and app. Fetch Rewards is based out of Madison, Wisconsin, and this shopping app has helped millions of people save money with the tap of a button as you simply scan physical and digital receipts.
Every month, over 11,000,000 people use Fetch Rewards. It is super easy to use Fetch and receive free gift cards.
I keep saying it’s simple because it really is! Every time you shop or dine out, you can scan your receipt into the Fetch Rewards app.
You can scan receipts from any grocery store, clothing store, pet store, home improvement store, club store, restaurant, gas station, and more. Basically, anywhere you shop, you can snap a picture of the receipt and scan it into Fetch.
You can even use your digital receipts from online purchases such as Amazon, Target, Instacart, and more by connecting your online accounts.
If you have a receipt, then you can scan it!
You earn points when you submit your receipts, and Fetch pays you in points that you can redeem for gift cards.

How does Fetch Rewards work?
Here’s how Fetch Rewards works:
- Sign up and download Fetch Rewards by creating an account or connecting a Google or Facebook account account, and then make a password for your account.
- Go shopping like you normally do.
- Scan your first receipt and earn points. To do this, you simply go to your Fetch Rewards app and click on the orange circle at the bottom of your screen that says “Snap.” You then take a picture of your receipt. If you have a digital receipt, you can just tap on the blue circle instead.
- Redeem your points for gift cards, make charitable donations, enter sweepstakes, and more.
I have personally used Fetch to prepare for my Fetch Rewards review, and I can promise you it’s just that simple!
How much can you earn with Fetch Rewards?
The amount you can earn on Fetch Rewards really depends on your spending, whether you are completing the Fetch Special Offers, and so on.
Because I am writing this Fetch Rewards review, I wanted to use the app for a while to give you the best review possible, and I was able to earn around $56 in free gift cards in 2-3 months by simply spending how I normally do. I didn’t put any additional effort in the app other than just scanning my shopping receipts.
As you can see, Fetch Rewards clearly won’t make you rich, but you can easily make a little extra money shopping like you normally do.
I also don’t think that I spent more than 20 minutes total in the Fetch app. It’s easy to use and only takes like 10 seconds to scan a receipt. You don’t have to do anything else.
What stores can I use for Fetch Rewards?
The great thing about Fetch Rewards is that you can use any retailer or store where you buy groceries, from big box stores, to mom and pop stores, to drug stores, convenience stores, hardware stores, liquor stores, gas stations, club stores (such as Costco), and more.
With any receipt I get, I scan it into the Fetch Rewards app. It takes less than a minute, and you earn points with every scan – so easy!
Plus, you don’t have to jump through any hoops to get points. You don’t need to pre-select the offers in the Fetch Rewards app or scan barcodes, plus there are no surveys or ads. Simply go shopping at your favorite retailers just like usual.
You simply scan your receipt after you are done shopping and earn points.
How many receipts can I scan on Fetch a day?
Fetch Rewards allows you to submit 35 receipts within a 7-day period. Electronic receipts that are processed on your account do not count toward the 35 receipt limit.
Other things to know about using Fetch Rewards:
- Fetch Rewards works for stores located in the United States and Puerto Rico.
- You have 14 days to scan your receipts to earn points.
- When you scan your receipts, your receipt must include the store name, the items that you bought, the date of your purchase, the store’s address, and the total amount that you spent. All of that information is included on your receipt.
- If you scan a receipt with a participating item from the Special Offers tab, then you will get bonus points.
- If you have a long receipt, you simply just snap more pictures to make sure that your whole receipt is included.
- You should never make fake receipts or scan the same receipt twice in order to try and get more points. This violates Fetch’s terms of service. Always be honest!
Does Fetch Rewards take gas receipts?
Yes, you can scan your gas receipts with Fetch Rewards.
If you’re looking to earn even more from your gas station purchases, then I recommend Upside.
Upside is an app that helps you find gas stations, groceries, and restaurants where you can earn cash back. You simply sign up for a free account, and then look at the Upside app to find places near you.
You can earn up to $0.25/gallon cash back at gas stations, up to 30% back on grocery purchases, and up to 45% back at restaurants.

What receipts give you the most points on Fetch?
There are several main ways that you can earn points on Fetch Rewards, such as:
- Scanning receipts. When you purchase something, whether it be online or in-person, you can take a picture of your receipt with your cell phone and earn points. Every time you scan a receipt in the app, you will receive a minimum of 25 points.
- Complete special offers. When you are logged into your Fetch Rewards account, you can see what products will give you the most points. As you can see in the image above, you simply just go to the Fetch Rewards App and go to the Discover tab. There, you will see what items will earn you the most points and extra points. Special offers can give you anywhere from 250 points to even over 5,000 points. New special offers are added almost every day too, so even if you don’t see something today, there may be something that interests you tomorrow. Now, you don’t have to look at the Discover page if you don’t want to – it’s simply just another way to earn more points. You can just use Fetch Rewards and scan your receipts without ever doing anything else in the Fetch Rewards app.
- Refer friends and family. Sometimes, you can receive around 2,000 to 4,000 points by referring a new user. You can simply head to the Refer A Friend tab in the Fetch Rewards app to find your referral code.
- Joining the Huggies Rewards+ Club. If you use Huggies diapers, you can earn up to 50,000 points by simply purchasing certain Huggies items, such as Huggies Diapers or Huggies Little Movers. Plus, you can get Huggies special offers points as well which are quite high as well.
- Save on prescriptions. With Fetch, you can also save on your prescriptions. GoodRx is a free prescription price comparison tool that anyone can use. Simply head to your “Me” tab and click on GoodRx. You can then show this card when paying for prescriptions. You’ll get 10,000 points on your first prescription purchase, and then 1,500 points for future purchases and refills.
For me, I mainly just scan my receipts and refer others to Fetch Rewards. But if I wanted to earn more, there are several other great ways to increase the amount of rewards points that I can earn.
How many points equal a dollar on Fetch?
On average, 1,000 points equals $1 in rewards.
10,000 points is equivalent to around $10.
How do I redeem a free gift card from Fetch Rewards?
To redeem a Fetch reward, you will simply go to your Fetch account, and look at the bottom of the app. Look for the Rewards tab and tap on that.
Here, you will see what you can use your points on, such as:
- Gift cards up to $50
- Sweepstakes entries
- Charitable organizations
- Fetch merchandise, such as t-shirts
Then, you click on the button that shows how many points you want to use.
Next, you click on the orange button that says “Get My Reward” at the bottom.
You will then be asked to confirm that this is what you would like to do. It typically takes around three days to process your redemption request.
Once your reward is ready, you will get a notification. You can then go to your Rewards tab, then click on “My Rewards” to find your reward. Here, you will see your gift card code so that you can redeem your gift card at the company that you have chosen.
What’s the Fetch bonus code?
Fetch Rewards does not currently have an active bonus code. But, once they do, I will update this and let you know.
What is the catch with Fetch Rewards? How does Fetch Rewards make money? What does Fetch Rewards do with your receipts?
These are all great questions, and they are definitely things I want to cover in this Fetch Rewards review.
Fetch Rewards is so easy to use, but what’s in it for them? Why do they give out rewards and free gift cards just for scanning your receipts?
Fetch Rewards is paying you for the data they get from your receipt. They don’t see your name or other private or personal information. Instead, they are observing trends in shopper behavior. They then use this information to help their partners better understand their customer’s shopping habits.
Fetch Rewards also makes money by finding good deals for those who are signed up for Fetch Rewards. The Special Offers section in the Fetch Rewards app is an area where companies pay to be featured in this list, sort of like an advertisement. Companies know that they can get a lot of people looking at their company in the Fetch Rewards app, so they pay Fetch Rewards for this advertisement.
Is Fetch Rewards safe?
Yes, Fetch Rewards is safe to use.
They go through many steps to protect your personal information, and all of the data that they collect is anonymized and aggregated with everyone else’s, so your personal information is never shown.
Also, your receipts only show the last five digits of your credit card number, so you don’t have to worry about that being shared either because Fetch can’t see it.
Do my Fetch Rewards points expire?
If your Fetch Rewards account is not used for 90 days, then your points will expire. Your account will receive inactive status if you haven’t submitted any receipts or redeemed any rewards in a 90-day period.
This means that you just simply need to scan a receipt or redeem your Fetch points so your points never expire. If you get in the habit of scanning your receipts every time you shop, you shouldn’t have a problem with expiring points.
It’s very easy to stay active as pretty much everyone spends money in a 90-day period.
Is Ibotta or Fetch better?
Fetch Rewards and Ibotta are very similar.
Fetch Rewards is a little easier to use than Ibotta because all you need to do is scan your receipt into the Fetch Rewards app, and then you are done. With Ibotta, it’s more like clipping coupons and takes a little more time, but you may be able to earn a little more with Ibotta.
The great thing is that you can use the same exact grocery receipt for both Fetch and Ibotta. So if you have the time, you can try using both to earn even more rewards and free gift cards. This will allow you to increase your earnings by doing very little extra work.

With Ibotta, you simply create an Ibotta account, unlock rebates and rewards, go shopping, verify your purchases, and then get cash.
You can redeem rebates from over hundreds of stores, such as Walmart, Target, Kroger, Publix, Walgreens, Home Depot, Old Navy, Chewy, and more.
You can also earn cash back online and in-store with Ibotta.
Ibotta is one of the easiest money making apps because you’re making money shopping like you normally do. They pay in cash or gift cards to Amazon, Starbucks, and other stores.

If you’ve been looking for a new home in Utah’s current market, you know pickings are slim. Most buyers know what a few gallons of paint can do. But if you’re willing to take on a couple of additional projects, you can turn that ugly duckling house into an affordable dream. Here’s a few ugly features that aren’t too tough to take on.
Something underfoot. Floors. Buyers and sellers frequently have different tastes in what’s under their feet. If the seller replaces the carpet before the home is listed, expect a portion of the cost to be factored into the price (listings that say “all new carpet” are going to cost you more). You’re also unlikely to get top-of-the-line carpet if the seller replaces it simply to list. If you’re not scared of living temporarily with threadbare, stained carpet, request a drop in price in the form of a flooring allowance when you make your initial offer. You may also give the entire room a lift by replacing skinny baseboards with the clean lines of the more modern 5” style. Baseboards are easy to replace and cost around $1.50-$3.00 per foot at home improvement stores.
Fireplace blues. A fireplace is a focal point. But an old-school fireplace with brass trim, mauve tile, ugly rock, or beige brick is an eyesore to just about everyone. Few sellers update the fireplace before putting the home on the market. If they do, they’ve probably updated the entire house as well and are asking a justifiably premium price. But a fireplace eyesore can be easily fixed after move-in with paint (1 gallon: $35), new mantle ($150 and up), or even new tile (DIY for ~ $100, depending on the tile chosen and how much you’re replacing). Be sure to determine if your choice of materials is rated for high heat before starting.
Chained in. A fenced-in backyard is a huge plus even when the fence is not quite your style. Chain link is and looks cheap, but it’s also easily covered. Plants, just as fast-growing bamboo, grape vines, or Virginia Creeper look great year-round. If you need complete cover ASAP, look at privacy netting in decorative patterns (around $2.50 per linear foot). You may also find someone who’s looking to unload scrap fencing or barn wood at a very low price—both make great, rustic fencing options that can be strapped to an existing chain link fence for an all-new look.
Old-school appliances. Regardless of what the listing states, retro doesn’t apply to avocado green appliances or cream-colored dishwashers with fake wood grain trim. But here’s the deal: if those appliances are still in the home you buy, you can bet they’re workhorses, just not pretty. If a seller spends the cash to update the appliances just to sell the house, you probably won’t get top of the line or even the appliances that you may want—and you’ll pay a premium. There are numerous ways to solve unattractive-but-working appliances, however. Search yard sale sites (like KSL Classifieds or local Facebook groups) for people who are remodeling. When people purchase brand new homes they often opt not to keep the builder-selected appliances. Keep your eyes peeled for individuals selling all new appliances—or even entire kitchens!
Dismal driveway. No one ever bought a home because of the driveway… but a cracked one in desperate need of repair drastically reduces curb appeal and brings the listing price of the home down. As a buyer, you’ll benefit from the lower price and you don’t even need to do the driveway repair work yourself. A professional will break up and haul away the old driveway and pour a new driveway all for a couple grand (depending on square footage).
Remember, those nice-looking renovated homes will not only cost you more, but chances are you’d choose different appliances, carpet or flooring for yourself. Buy the house that’s located where you want to live and that has the views and schools you want, then take the time to make the needed updates and repairs as you can afford them.

Last month, my boyfriend and I took a weekend trip to Seattle to celebrate our anniversary. We got a great deal on a hotel using a discount app. We’d stayed at this hotel before, and the view was gorgeous. The price was also reasonable and the room was clean. We checked in, unloaded our bags and pulled back the curtains, preparing to take in Seattle’s beautiful skyline, which we’d flown a thousand miles to see.
Lo and behold, the parking lot. A man getting into his car looked up at us, startled.
“Eh,” I said. “We didn’t come here to hang out at the hotel.”
“Yeah, but I want a view,” Brian said, drawing the curtains. “The parking lot? C’mon.”
He vowed to talk to someone at the front desk and see how much it would cost to get a better room. We were surprised when the hotel receptionist said it would be no problem to upgrade us free of charge. There was no hesitation. It was the easiest upgrade I’ve ever gotten. We went up to our new room, opened the curtains and took in a nice nighttime view of the Space Needle.
This experience reminded me of just how effective speaking up can be. I’ve always struggled with speaking up for myself. But the more I see how speaking up can get you discounts, upgrades, necessary help, jobs, etc., the more I’m trying to master it.
Why speaking up was hard for me
Embarrassment
I grew up learning to be very independent and self-sufficient, and it took me a while to understand the cliché: the squeaky wheel gets the grease.
That cliche began to make the most sense when I entered the working world. My outspoken co-workers would get the projects I wanted just because they made sure it was known that they wanted those projects. Luckily, my boss was nurturing. She recognized my meekness and encouraged me to speak up when I wanted something. I realized I was embarrassed to ask for things. I felt like if I had the guts to ask for a project, it meant I was full of myself, and that was embarrassing to me. (Weird, I know. I guess I had an odd cultural upbringing.) When I had to ask for help in school, I always felt it meant I wasn’t smart and couldn’t handle things on my own. As an adult, that embarrassment turned into feeling like I was just being a nuisance.
Lack of confidence
It took me a while to ask for a raise or promotion on my own. I felt like, if I deserved something, it would just come to me. Silly, right? Another example: When I was a financial mess, I got into problems with overdraft fees. It was totally my fault, but the bank definitely preyed on my financial irresponsibility, charging me $35 per transaction, and sneakily posting withdrawals before deposits that were made early that same day. A friend told me I could call and have the fees removed, but I resigned myself to the belief that I deserved to pay them because, y’know, bank fees are all about personal conviction and morals and stuff.
Laziness
It hurts to confess this, but when I was a financial mess, I also stupidly fell for a free credit score scam. The company charged my card an unauthorized $14.99 fee. After researching the scam online, I knew if I called my credit card company and told them the issue, the fee would most likely be removed. But at the time, I told myself, “Eh, it’s just 15 bucks.” Then I asked my lazy self, “If someone paid you $15 to have a five-minute phone call right now, would you do it?” I answered yes, and I picked up the phone.
Speaking up in action
It’s still hard sometimes, but I’ve learned to speak up for myself a lot more these days. And it’s been really effective in saving me money, or even helping me to earn more money. The other day, I randomly called my cell phone provider about lowering my bill. I saw a better, cheaper plan online. The only catch — there was some crazy $150 fee for activating this plan. It would take seven months before I would even start seeing savings. So I called and half-jokingly asked, “I don’t have to pay that, right?”
The customer service rep said, “Sure, we can waive that.”
Well, that was easy! By just asking, I was able to lower my phone bill by $15 a month.
“Just asking” is one of the simplest but most effective money hacks I’ve come across. And the more I see how effective it can be, the less shy I become about speaking up. But, of course, there are a few things to keep in mind for better results:
Be nice
Pretty simple. I think people are more apt to offer help when someone is kind. Sure, customers who raise hell might get what they want, and being too nice can certainly work against you. But I’ve been nasty to customer service reps, and then I’ve been patient and kind to them. I’ve learned that, most of the time, nice usually trumps nasty. Since making it a point to be nicer and more understanding, I’ve found that my customer service calls are quicker and more effective.
Get personal
I’ve found that it usually helps, when asking for something, to remind people that you’re human. When arguing for a raise, I reminded my boss that my financial situation was suffering due to inflation — rent increases and the like. When calling my Internet company about their price hikes, I reminded them that I don’t have the money to pay for such a huge increase. “Times are tough,” I told the rep.
She sighed, “Yeah, I understand.”
It took some work, but I was able to get an even better deal on my Internet because of some special promo or whatever they had going on.
Be persistent
Sometimes, however, it ain’t easy. While I wouldn’t be annoyingly persistent in asking for something like a free room upgrade, I was annoyingly persistent with those aforementioned bank fees (especially when they once were at $300). When I finally decided to call, I asked to talk to a manager, and it took nearly an hour of my time and a lot of headache in arguing my case for waiving the fees, but in the end, “just asking” won.
Of course, there’s a difference between asking for something appropriate and then asking for a handout. And this is kind of what I struggle with. Blatantly asking for a free flight upgrade, for example, seems so embarrassing, yet I still want to try it, because others have said it works. And then I’ve met people who aren’t afraid to “just ask” for damn near everything, to the point that their irreverence borders on cheapskate. When I’m asking for help or for a discount or something, I try to imagine how the other party feels when I’m speaking up — will they feel put out or taken advantage of? If so, then I think twice about asking.
But I’m not quite sure where to draw that line, so what do you think? Speaking up works, but where’s the boundary between being outspoken and just being cheap?

The first step to finding out what you should do for a living is to identify your skills and interests.
- What are you good at?
- What do you enjoy doing?
Once you have a better idea of your strengths and passions, you can start researching your options.

When you’re looking for work, it’s important to remember that there are many different ways of making a living. You can be an artist or designer in your own home studio, or run your own business. The key is to figure out what your interests are, and then find a way to use those skills in the work you love doing.
The goal of this article is not just to help you find a job that pays the bills, but to help you find work that is satisfying, meaningful, and fun.

Do what you love and the money will follow.
If you do something that you love, you will never have to work a day in your life. If you do what you love, and are good at it, people will pay for that service or product.
Do what makes YOU happy. If you’re not happy, no one else will be either.
Don’t let anyone tell you what to do with your life. You should never have to justify your decisions or choices to anyone. You are the only one who has to live with your decisions and choices.
Do what you want, not what other people want for you or think that you should do. Period.
#2 – Identify What Interests You & Makes You Tick
There are a variety of ways you can go about finding out what interests you. You can read books and articles on different topics, talk to people with various careers, or take online quizzes and assessments – like this what should I do for a living quiz.
The first step to finding the right career for you is to identify what interests you intellectually.
- What fascinates you?
- What makes you feel like you are not working?
- How do you want to spend your free time?
Once you know what fascinates you, the next step is to figure out how you can turn this into a career. Then, pursue your career interests relentlessly so you can reach your full potential.
#3 – Uncover your Strengths
Identifying your strengths is the key to finding opportunities that will be a good fit for you and enable you to reach your full potential.
Here are some things to take note of:
- Pay attention to what you enjoy doing.
- Notice when you feel most energized and engaged.
- Consider what you do well naturally.
- Reflect on feedback you’ve received from others.
- Ask yourself how you can use your strengths more often in your current role or situation.

#4 – Match Your Values With Your Interests
Your values are the things that are most important to you in life. They guide your decisions and actions. They direct you to live a life that is meaningful to you.
There are many ways to identify your values. One way is to think about what is most important to you in different areas of your life, such as your relationships, work, leisure activities, and so on. Another way is to think about what you would like people to say about you when you are no longer here. What do you want them to remember about you?
Once you have identified your values, it can be helpful to write them down or share them with someone who will support and encourage you in living according to them.

When you know what is important to you (values) and what makes you happy and excited (interests), it becomes much easier to make decisions about how to spend your time and energy.
For example, let’s say one of your values is “family” and one of your interests is “cooking”. You could combine these by cooking meals for your family members or friends. Not only would this be enjoyable for you (because it aligns with your interest in cooking), but it would also be meaningful because it would be an act of love and care for those closest to you (which aligns with the value of family).
#5 – Consider your Lifestyle
Are you okay living below your means? Or do you prefer to flash your cash?
If you tend to spend money frivolously or struggle with saving money, then you need to be a high-worth earner. If you are okay living stingy, then a modest salary will probably work for you.
Keep in mind your lifestyle and what would be the best fit for you.
Consider if the hours are flexible, if you’d have time for hobbies and other interests, and how the commute looks. Sometimes rethinking your opportunities can give you a better perspective on what’s truly important to you.
Other Questions to Ponder:
- Do you want a job that will consume most of your time?
- Do you want a job where you can have a good work-life balance?
- Are you okay with being tied to one location or have the flexibility to move around?
- Are you willing to travel for work? If so, how often and how far?
- What are your salary expectations? Are you looking for health benefits, paid vacation, or other perks?

#6 – Spend Time Doing your Research
The best way to find a career you love is to first figure out what it is that you’re passionate about. What are the things that make you excited to get out of bed in the morning? Once you know what your passions are, research careers that align with those interests.
This just doesn’t happen overnight.
In fact, I recently went back to something of interest to me years ago because it would provide the time freedom I desired.

Oh, I cannot tell you how important this step is!
You have heard a similar story… my son dreamed of being an engineer and we planned to send him to engineering school. After his internship, the thought of being an engineer sucked the life out of him. Glad we learned this lesson before we spend money on his college education.
That is why I believe schools like this are so important to get real-life experience doing what you think you want to do for a living.
Consider internships or volunteer work to get your foot in the door.
Gaining experience can help you learn more about a particular field or company, and whether or not it’s the right fit for you.
#10 – Be open to change
Here are some things to keep in mind with change.

I fix up a lot of houses whether they are my personal house, my rental properties or my fix and flips. When I repair a house I don’t mean I do the work myself; I have a contractor do it for me. The most difficult part about fixing up a home is finding a great contractor and estimating how much the repairs will be. Estimating the costs to repair a house is not easy to do, but this article will give an idea of what repairs will cost. Repair costs will vary based on the quality of products used, how much labor costs are in your area and the contractor you use.
Update on 2021 repair prices!
I wrote this article before Covid hit the world. You might assume that Covid would decrease the prices of repairs but the opposite has happened. Repair costs have skyrocketed. Many manufacturing companies that produced materials shut down or reduced production while at the same time people were staying home and completing remodeling projects! The price of lumber, insulation, windows, doors, etc has gone much higher.
I am hoping that the market corrects itself soon but you can take most of the prices I list here and add 20 to 40 percent thanks to the increase in costs.
Why buy something that needs work?
Almost all the houses I buy need work and some need a lot of work. I would love to buy houses that are in great condition, but I want to buy houses that are a great deal. To get a great deal you usually have to buy houses that need some type of repairs, because there are fewer buyers who will buy those homes. When a house needs a lot of repairs, most buyers may not be able to get a loan on that house. The fewer buyers for a house the better deal you can get. It also takes cash to make repairs on a house, which further reduces the number of people who can buy houses that need work. Many people don’t want to hassle with making repairs or finding a contractor to make the repairs, which further reduces the buyers for homes that need work.
Even if you buy a house that is in great shape it will need work at some point. The fixtures may become outdated, the interior or exterior may need paint and things eventually break.

How much does it cost to paint?
When I fix up a house I always paint the house and replace the floor coverings, unless those items were just done. The cost to paint a house has increased a lot in the last few years because the cost of paint has increased and labor has increased as well. My costs to paint the interior of a house are about $1.50 to $2.00 a square foot. For a 1,500 square foot house, it costs about $2,200 to paint the interior. That includes painting the trim white and the walls a different color like beige or gray.
The exterior of a house costs more to paint because the paint is more expensive, more prep work is needed and the weather has to be nice. Painting the exterior of a house can run $3.00 a square foot or more depending on the complexity and condition of the house. If a home has peeling paint it will cost much more to scrape and prepare the surface for new paint. If a house has lead-based paint, the costs can be much more due to the preparation and clean up work needed to dispose of the old paint. Your contractor or painter must be certified to remove lead-based paint or they can face huge fines from the government.
How much does flooring cost?
When I replace the flooring I almost always use carpet for the living areas and vinyl or tile for the kitchens and bathrooms. If a house has hardwood I will re-finish the hardwood, but I don’t add or replace hardwood because of the cost. It will cost three times as much as carpet to install hardwood floors. For me to replace the carpet in a 1,500 square foot house it will cost about $3,000 to $3,500 installed. Vinyl or tile will cost another $500 to $1,000 for the kitchen and baths. These costs are for middle of the road materials that look nice and will last, but do not cost a fortune.
If a house already has hardwood I will do my best to re-finish it, because refinishing is cheaper than installing new carpet. I also like the look of hardwood floors and buyers love them. I can re-finish a 1,500 square foot house that is mostly hardwood for about $2,000.
We will also use laminate or vinyl plank flooring now that the quality has improved and it lasts if installed correctly.
How much are light fixtures?
Another great update to a house is replacing the light and plumbing fixtures. A house with brand new lights, door handles, and faucets that all match, can transform a home. I like to use antique bronze, but we have also used brushed nickel. Light fixtures are as cheap as 2 for $20 for a basic bedroom and bathroom lights. A nice chandelier can be bought for under $150 as well as a nice ceiling fan. Door handles are $20 or less depending on the style and faucets run from $35 to $150. For an entire house, you can replace the lights, door handles and faucets for about $1,200 installed.
How much are appliances?
Another way to make a house look great is by adding new appliances. We put stainless steel appliances in our houses; I can get a stove for $500 to $600, a dishwasher for $300 and microwave for $250. I usually do not buy a fridge for my flips and for my rentals I may buy used appliances off Craigslist. Appliances make a huge difference in the look of a kitchen even if the cabinets are dated.
How much are cosmetic repairs?
If you do all the work mentioned above and the rest of your home is in decent shape, it will make a huge difference in the look and feel. I almost always do all the repairs I discussed on every fix and flip. With my rentals, I usually do most of those repairs, but if a house is in decent condition I can get away with less. Here are the total costs for a cosmetic upgrade on a 1,500 square foot house:
New interior paint: $2,200
New floor coverings: $4,500
New fixtures: $1,200
New appliances: $1,300
Total cost: $9,200
When you fix up a home it almost always costs more than you think so be prepared to spend more than what you calculate. It is very rare that I ever spend less than $10,000 on any house that I fix up because there are usually many little things that need to be repaired as well. Drywall holes, outlet covers, landscaping, and many more things will increase the costs. It is also rare that I do not have more major repairs to complete.

How much are major repairs?
The repairs on my flips and rentals vary from basic cosmetics to a massive remodel. Here are other common repairs we make on houses and the cost.
- Kitchens: It is not as expensive as you might think to replace a kitchen. I can replace a basic kitchen including cabinets, countertops and sink for $2,500 in materials or less. After adding the labor you can replace a kitchen for well under $5,000.
- Baths: Baths can be gut jobs or a simple vanity replacement. For a full gut job, I can usually get the job done for less than $3,000. To replace a vanity, toilet and bath surround it can be done for less than $1,000.
- Roof: I have a great roofer who will replace the roof on a 1,500 square foot house for around $6,000.
- Electrical: Electric repairs can vary a great deal based on what needs to be done. Minor repairs can be a couple of hundred dollars or major rewiring jobs can be $5,000. It is important to get any electrical concerns checked out to see how serious they are.
- Plumbing: Plumbing is similar to electrical. A minor job can be very cheap, but to re-plumb, a house can cost $5,000 or more.
- Sewer: Sewer lines can be very expensive to replace. Luckily I have never had to replace one, but to replace a line can be $3,000 to $10,000.
- Foundation: Most foundation repairs are not fun to deal with. There are many issues from settling, water leakage, grading issues or structural problems. If you have water problems in the basement or crawl space it could be a major foundation issue that is $10,000 or more or a simple grading issue that some dirt work will fix.
- Windows: We end up replacing a lot of windows because we buy older houses all the time. For basic vinyl windows, I am usually charged about $300 a window by my contractors for material and install.
- Doors: We also replace a lot of interior doors. Six-panel white doors make a home look very nice. Doors are usually $100 to $150 per door installed.
- Stucco and siding: I rarely replace the siding on a home, but I have on occasion. I am putting brand new stucco on a fix and flip that is costing about $8,500 for a 1,250 square foot house. Replacing wood siding is cheaper, but you then have to paint the wood siding. You can still re-side and paint a house for less than stucco in most cases.
- Drywall/Sheetrock: With old houses, I see a lot of plaster and bad drywall. Brand new drywall makes an old house look so much better than uneven crumbling plaster. On a recent flip, a drywall specialist charged about $3,000 to do the walls and ceilings in three rooms that totaled about 500 square feet.
- Furnace/hot water heater: I had a brand new forced air furnace system installed for about $5,000 this year. To replace just the furnace is about $2,500 and a hot water heater about $800.

How much do I spend when I repair a house?
On my most recent fix and flip that is about to be put up for sale, I spent about $18,000 on the remodel. That included interior and exterior paint, new carpet, new doors, new trim, some electrical work, some new drywall, trash out, landscaping work and many little fixes. On a flip that is about to have the work started, I will spend over $50,000 on the repairs. That house needs new plumbing, new electric, new paint everywhere, siding work, new windows, new doors, new drywall, new baths, new kitchen, new floors, new fixtures, new trim and more.
Where do I buy materials to fix up my houses?
I shop at Home Depot for most materials including fixtures, doors, windows, door handles, kitchens, baths, and all the little stuff. I have a pro account with Home Depot, which gets me huge discounts on the materials we buy for flips and rentals.
Conclusion
Repairing a house does not cost $50,000 or $100,000 for basic cosmetic repairs. I see kitchen remodels on television that cost $50,000 and I can’t believe my eyes and ears! Even if you use high-end materials like granite counters and custom cabinets you should not spend $50,000 on a kitchen unless it is in a million-dollar home. Repairs can add up quickly on remodels and I always expect about $5,000 more in costs that I plan to spend due to unknowns. Find a great contractor, make sure that contractor does their work and shop around for the best prices to keep your costs down. Remember these costs are what I pay to fix up homes in my area. If you live in an expensive town, your costs may be significantly higher.

One time during the early 1970s, Stephen King opened an atlas at random on his kitchen table and decided that he and his wife would travel to whatever location it opens to.
The atlas happened to open to a page about Boulder, Colorado, and that’s how the story of The Shining began. Or so the legend goes.
King and his wife Tabitha checked into The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, on October 30th, 1974.
Having recently written Carrie and Salem’s Lot, two novels set in the writer’s home state of Maine, King needed a change of scenery to get his inspiration going.
And boy, did he get it going at The Stanley Hotel. The hotel’s on-site pet cemetery served as inspiration for another successful King novel. I don’t think we need to tell you the name of that one; you get the gist.
The couple arrived at the Stanley right at the close of the tourist season, as all the other guests were checking out.
The writer and his wife were the only guests at the hotel that night, as they checked into room 217, which was allegedly haunted.
That obviously didn’t deter King, but the eeriness of the massive hotel on the edge of the Rocky Mountains ultimately did.
The pair had dinner in the hotel’s grand hall, all by themselves, after which King took an evening tour of the grounds and ended up at the hotel bar, where he was served by a bartender named Grady.
That night, King had a nightmare that his young son was being chased by a firehose around the hotel corridors, and woke up in a sweat.
The experience at The Stanley Hotel reportedly sparked the inspiration for The Shining, which King first envisioned while staying there as a guest.
The Shining couldn’t have come at a better time for the Stanley, which had lost its appeal to tourists and was beginning to fall into neglect. It didn’t exactly help that it always closed during the winter, as the heavy snow would make getting there nearly impossible.
The success of The Shining sparked new interest in the hotel, and guests soon started flocking to Estes Park, all trying to check into room 217. Even now, that room is booked solid, and it’s basically impossible to find it available on Halloween.
Before we go further into the history of the Stanley, let’s clear up something that many of you might be wondering. You’ve surely noticed that the Overlook hotel in Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining, starring Jack Nicholson, looks nothing like the Colorado hotel.
That’s because the production crew chose a more accessible and convenient location to film the exterior shots for the movie. Kubrick’s Overlook is actually the Timberline Lodge at Mt. Hood in Oregon.
Stephen King wasn’t exactly thrilled by Kubrick’s portrayal of Jack Torrance and his eponymous novel, to put it nicely.
Consequently, in 1997, a King-approved take on the story was released, in the form of a three-part miniseries dubbed Stephen King’s The Shining.
The miniseries used the Stanley Hotel for all exterior shots, and even some interior scenes, honoring the place where The Shining first took shape.
The history of the Stanley Hotel, otherwise known as the Overlook
The picturesque, Colonial Revival hotel in Estes Park, just 5 miles from the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park, is widely known around the world today, thanks to the horror novel that it inspired.
But not that many people knew about it before The Shining. That might have had something to do with its secluded location and the fact that it stays closed during the winter months.
However, back in the early 1900s, the Stanley was buzzing with activity. Let’s go back to the beginning.
In 1903, Freelan Oscar Stanley, owner of the Stanley Motor Carriage Company, which made the fastest-then vehicle on earth — the Stanley Steamer — was struck down with tuberculosis.
Doctors didn’t have much hope that he would survive the disease, but advised him that the cool air of the Rocky Mountains might help alleviate his symptoms.
They, however, didn’t really think it would help much, and were convinced the next time they would see Stanley was at his funeral.
Imagine their surprise when they learned that Stanley was recovering nicely after spending time in the mountains. The businessman became enamored with the mountain views and the clean air, so much so that he would return to Estes Park every summer from then on.
He ended up building himself a home in the Rockies, and began construction on The Stanley Hotel in 1907.
The Stanley was built according to F.O. Stanley’s specifications, with the help of Denver-based architect Theilman Robert Weiger.
The 142-key hotel opened on July 4th, 1909, and quickly became a hotspot for upper-class guests and a health retreat for those suffering from tuberculosis.
The hotel, located at 333 Wonderview Avenue, with its breathtaking views of Lake Estes and the Rockies (particularly Long’s Peak) is now a national landmark.
The Stanley Hotel Historic District incorporates 11 structures, including: the main hotel, a concert hall, a carriage house, a manager’s cottage, a gate house, as well as The Lodge — a smaller bed-and-breakfast originally named Stanley Manor.
Today, the Stanley offers both historic rooms at the main hotel, apartment-style residences for extended stays called Aspire, and one- to three-bedroom condominiums dubbed Residences.
It also incorporates more than 14,000 square feet of sophisticated meeting and event space, and a number of indoor and outdoor wedding venues.
A unique feature of the Stanley is that it doesn’t have — or need — air conditioning; the hotel is naturally cooled by the mountain breeze, and it has been built to make the best of that breeze in order to ventilate the property.
The hotel also offers something for those seeking a ‘paranormal thrill.’
It features a variety of rooms with allegedly high paranormal activity, including room 217 (now called the Stephen King Suite), and rooms 401, 407 and 428, which are said to be haunted by ghosts.
There are a lot of horror fans out there, so obviously these rooms are highly requested and almost never available.
Another fun fact is that The Stanley Hotel served as a filming location for a movie on the complete opposite end of the spectrum, the 1994 comedy Dumb and Dumber, starring Jim Carrey, which was filmed on location.
The Stanley re-imagined by Stephen King
‘Some of the most beautiful resort hotels in the world are located in Colorado, but the hotel in these pages is based on none of them. The Overlook and the people associated with it exist wholly in the author’s imagination.’ – The Shining by Stephen King
While it might be true that the Overlook hotel is a feat of imagination, the similarities between the fictional hotel and the Stanley are pretty obvious.
Here’s what hotel manager Stuart Ullman tells Jack Torrance about the history of the Overlook in the first pages of the novel:
‘The Overlook was built in the years 1907 to 1909. The closest town is Sidewinder, forty miles easy of here over roads that are closed from sometime in late October or November until sometime in April. A man named Robert Townley Watson built it, the grandfather of our present maintenance man. Vanderbilts have stayed here, and Rockefellers, and Astors, and Du Ponts. Four Presidents have stayed in the Presidential Suite. Wilson, Harding, Roosevelt, and Nixon.’ To this description, Jack replies: ‘I wouldn’t be too proud of Harding and Nixon.’
In King’s novel, the Overlook hotel is inhabited by dark forces lying in wait every winter for human minds to invade and control.
Both Jack Torrance and his predecessor, Grady, become victims of these dark forces, which Ullman describes as ‘cabin fever.’
The isolation and silent enormity of the hotel take a toll on Jack’s already fragile mind, and the dark forces of the Overlook turn him against his own family.
In the novel, Jack’s clouded, drunken trance-like state makes him forget all about the hotel’s boiler, which ends up exploding and burning it to the ground.
Jack’s wife Wendy, his son Danny and Dick Halloran are the only survivors, and the hotel is soon being reconstructed.
In Kubrick’s interpretation, the plot is a bit different. Jack chases his son with an axe through the hotel’s on-site maze, but eventually becomes lost and trapped as Danny escapes with his mother. Jack Torrence ends up freezing to death inside the hedge maze.
The immense popularity and success of Kubrick’s adaptation led managers at the Stanley Hotel to build their very own hedge maze on the grounds, thus creating yet another attraction for fans of the novel and the movie.
Whether you’re a die-hard Stephen King fan, a Stanley Kubrick fan, a horror aficionado, or just enamoured with the Rocky Mountains, you’ll feel right at home at the Stanley Hotel.
The unrivalled view alone is enough to make you want to return every year, just as Oscar Stanley did.

Few questions are as unwelcome or unanswerable (at least in my house) as “What’s for dinner?” Every few months, I make futile attempts to meal plan or grocery shop smarter. I spread out cookbooks, I write down recipes, I make shopping lists, and then everything disappears (it seems) and I am back to my usual chaotic “It’s 4:45 and what are we going to eat again?!”
In these moments, I am much more likely to order pizza or stop by for a supermarket rotisserie chicken. Not only are these choices probably not as healthy as what we could make at home, but they are also more expensive. And at the moment, we need to cut our eating out/convenience food spending as much as possible.
I am no domestic diva, as you have already discovered. But there are plenty of people of who are. And some of them don’t even require googling. Take my mother-in-law, for example. She raised eight children on a tight budget, and I think she came up with a genius idea. Listen to this: She served the same seven meals every week. For instance, Monday was always spaghetti night, Tuesday was always chicken potpie, and so on. It meant her shopping list was the same every single week. Of course, it also means that my husband was burned out on repetition, so we definitely can’t adopt the same policy in our house. But I do think it’s a great idea.
Meal planning options
1. Emergency meals. This is the only kind of meal planning I have done successfully. And it’s not really meal planning at all, but more of a quick, one-time fix to prevent ordering pizza. Basically, post 5-10 meals inside a cupboard door that can be prepared in 30 minutes or less (I say 30 minutes because that’s how long a round trip to pick up prepared food would take in my neck of the woods). These meals should be simple and be composed of items that are shelf-stable or produce that lasts longer like carrots, onions, or frozen vegetables. In addition, always make sure you have that certain list of shelf-stable items present in your pantry. When you feel rushed or overwhelmed, check out the list.
Since we buy half a beef at a time, we always have plenty of ground beef in our freezer. I can quickly thaw ground beef, so it can be part of several of our staple meals. My kids actually prefer casseroles, one-dish skillets, and soups to slabs of meat (which is what my farmer husband prefers), so those meals make up most of our emergency meals. Never underestimate what you can create with a can of beans, diced tomatoes, pasta, or spaghetti sauce.
One of my favorite emergency meals relies on the same basic ingredients. However, by switching up the spices, cheese, and bean type, you can make the meal Mexican- or Italian-style. It’s different enough that it satisfies my husband’s need for variety.
Other emergency meal examples include spaghetti or other types of pasta, soups, and breakfast foods like eggs, pancakes, waffles, and baked oatmeal.
2. Independent menu planning. This is where I fail every time I try, but other people do this with success and claim it has revolutionized their life and their food budget.
Some people use Google calendar for this, others use spreadsheets (find a free template at the bottom of this Unclutterer post), and some people just create a paper grid and fill in the meals. However you do it, highlight the winning recipes and get rid of the duds so you don’t repeat the meals no one likes.
What I’ve heard is that most of us repeat the same 21 meals most of the time. Picking out your standard meals, maybe supplemented with one or two new recipes a month, sounds really easy. Creating a systematic way of doing this is where I fail. But here are some tips to help you:
- Always menu plan at the same time every week (if planning weekly).
- Create a generic shopping list with items that you get every time you shop (milk, bananas, etc.) and fill in the rest of the shopping list based on your meal plan.
- If it works for you, create a basic framework of meals. For instance, Meatless Mondays, Chicken Tuesdays, Pasta Wednesdays, Slow Cooker Thursdays, and Clean-Out-The-Fridge-Fridays. Then it narrows down which type of meal you need to cook.
- On busy nights, plan for quick meals.
- Cook once, eat twice. For instance, plan for Roasted chicken on Tuesday and then chop the leftover chicken up and give it new life in Chicken Fettucine on Wednesday.
- Maybe you want to meal plan based on the food you need to use up. If so, I use www.allrecipes.com because I can put in an ingredient I want to use up (like cilantro) and find recipes that include that ingredient.
- Mark off the days that you won’t be home. This is a no-brainer, but I think this is one of my main problems: We don’t need all the meals I plan. One solution is to only plan for 4 to 5 dinners a week to allow for other plans that may pop up unexpectedly or lots of food leftovers.
3. Paid subscription services. Google “menu planning” and you will find paid subscription services that vary in their scope (although it seems like the pricing is fairly similar between the different companies).
Emeals and $5 Meal Plan are examples. You can pick from many types of meal plans (paleo, slow cooker, clean eating, etc.) and they will give you recipes, meal plans and shopping lists for at least $5 per month. Plan to eat is another one. In this case, you put in your own recipes (or use other members’ recipes). By dragging and dropping the specific recipes you want, your menu plan and shopping list are then created. It is normally $4.95/month, but they will run a Black Friday sale for 50% off a yearly subscription, starting November 28.
