It’s not uncommon to hear the words “apartment building” and “apartment community” used interchangeably for this type of dwelling unit. In this article, we’ll look at the difference and explore the features that make up an apartment complex.
What is an apartment building?
An apartment building is a complex full of apartment residences. It’s simply the physical structure built by property developers.
Apartment buildings are more than simply homes, though. They contain many important rooms and features that are essential to running the complex.
What are the features of an apartment building?
When you move to a new apartment, you’ll have to get to know your neighbors and the apartment community you’re joining. Here’s what you can expect to see at a typical apartment complex or building.
Leasing office
The leasing office is where the administrative tasks happen. It’s the office that your property manager works in and where you can find leases, maintenance requests and other important documents. The leasing office is also where a resident can go if they have any issues with rent or are in need of other services surrounding living units.
Stairwell
If your apartment building has more than one floor, the building will have a stairwell to get to the ground level. These stairwells are typically located along the edge of the building, at the end of the hall. Buildings will also have elevators as an accommodation for those who cannot use the stairwells in apartments.
Curbs
The curbs surrounding apartment buildings should be well maintained and not coming apart. These will create space between the sidewalk and the road, so you can walk safely.
When you’re parking, be sure to look at the color of the curb. Concrete curbs painted red or yellow are often no-parking zones.
Street lights
Apartment complexes contain many street lamps that come on at night. This way, you can safely walk from your car to your apartment building.
Parking spaces
Apartment buildings usually have designated parking for residents and guests. If you are assigned a parking spot, it will likely have a number painted on the space so it’s easy for you to find. Apartments in major cities or urban areas usually charge an additional fee for parking.
Every apartment building will also have a few handicapped parking spaces near the complex. Parking in these spots requires a handicapped parking plaque or license plate. These spots are reserved for people who have mobility difficulties.
Patios and balconies
Patios are attached to ground-floor apartment buildings. Usually, they’re a concrete slab on which you can put outdoor furniture and plants.
If you live on an upper level, you might have a balcony which gives you some outdoor space. Even if your patio or balcony is very small, there are ways to decorate it so that you can relax and enjoy some fresh air on a nice evening.
Dumpster
The dumpster is where people who live in the apartment buildings can drop off their bagged garbage.
Dog waste bags
If your apartment allows for pets, they may provide dog waste bags. These bags are for your pet’s waste when you take them outside and put the trash in the dumpster when you’re finished.
Key card
Your key card is an electronic card that will unlock many of the common rooms and entrances of the apartment building. Examples include the security gate and fitness center. These are only issued to residents and staff and are a part of the building design to keep residents safe.
Electronic gate
The electronic gate is located at the entrance of the parking lot. These are in place for your security so only people allowed to come to the apartment can enter.
What is an apartment community?
While an apartment building provides you with a place to live, an apartment community makes it feel like home. A community is alive. It’s the residents, pets, guests and staff that live and work in the complex. They’re the friends you’ll make from down the hall and the property manager who maintains your apartment building and unit. They’re the reason you’re glad you rented there instead of somewhere else.
What are the features of an apartment community?
Apartment amenities, in a residential property that encourage people to interact, will make it easier for you to get to know your neighbors and feel like part of the community. If you’re looking to live in a socially active neighborhood, look for an apartment that has some of the following features and amenities that add value to resident life.
Swimming pool
An apartment building’s swimming pool often becomes a community gathering space. In warmer climates, it can be an especially great place to hang out on a warm day.
Fitness center
Many apartment buildings include a fitness center as an amenity, although some charge a monthly fee to use the equipment. The fitness room is for residents only and requires a key card to get in. They include things like free weights, treadmills, ellipticals and stationary bicycles.
Instead of paying for a monthly gym membership and spending time driving to the gym, you can exercise in your apartment building and perhaps get to know some of your neighbors.
Clubhouse
This is a common room in upscale apartment complexes. It will likely have a TV, a small kitchen, tables, chairs and possibly some game tables like pool or darts. Often, the property manager will allow a tenant to rent this room out for parties or special events.
Community lounge
This may be the same thing as the clubhouse. It’s a common area that’s large enough for a group to meet and relax. Some lounges have Wi-Fi and workspaces.
Pet-friendly spaces
Some apartments have designated lawn spaces for dogs and their owners to play. Apartments that offer pet-friendly housing tend to attract pet owners.
It’s easy to find some common ground with other dog lovers, so if you have a playful dog, look for a pet-friendly apartment. Some apartments will even host pet-friendly events in these designated areas, making it a great social activity for tenants (and their furry friends)!
Find an apartment building and community to suit your personality
All apartment buildings have different amenities and newer apartment listings are adding some cool modern spaces to woo new tenants and enhance resident life.
While modern features are great, to make new friends and become a part of the community, it’s important to spend some time talking to the residents before signing a lease.

2. Day care (and bring your kid)
Finding a job that lets you bring your child along can save you childcare costs and watching other people’s kids is one way to do it.
You could start your own day care or find a job at a day care.
If you want to start a home day care, then you will want to check your state’s rules for home day cares, such as if you need a license. You’ll also need a safe space for children, as well as toys and games.
You could also try to find a job at a day care in your local area. Many day care centers allow you to bring your child, or they will give you a discounted rate to have your child attend the day care as well while you work.
Another option is to become a nanny or babysitter for a family that allows you to have your child there as well.
Starting a day care, working in one, or becoming a nanny/babysitter can be a win-win. You earn money and don’t worry about finding someone to watch your kid. Plus, your child gets to play and learn with other children.

Selling printables is a great work-from-home business idea for single moms. This is because you can do this while your kids are sleeping or at school and earn passive income too!
Printables are digital files that people buy, download, and print themselves. These can include planners, calendars, wall art, grocery shopping checklists, weekly meal plans that someone puts on their fridge, and educational worksheets for kids.
You can sell your printables on websites like Etsy. This is a way to make money from home because you only need to make one digital file for each product, and you can sell it many times. You don’t have to print or send anything to your customers. You make the digital file; your customer buys it, downloads it, and takes care of the rest.

4. Virtual assistant
As a single mom, you may be looking for a job that fits into your schedule. Working as a virtual assistant (VA) could be your answer, as you get to work from home and choose hours that work for you.
I’ve worked as a virtual assistant before, and I also have virtual assistants who help me with my business. Many parents have told me that a virtual assistant job is one of the best jobs for stay-at-home moms because it’s very flexible, and I agree!
A VA is someone who works from home as an assistant for someone else. Nowadays, many businesses can be operated from home, so it makes sense that an assistant can also work from home.

For publishing your book, there are two options:
Traditional Publishing – You submit your manuscript to publishers. If a publisher likes your work, they will print, distribute, and market your book for you. In return, you’ll earn royalties from sales.
Self-Publishing – Platforms like Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing allow you to publish your book yourself. You control every aspect and get a higher percentage of the sales, but you also handle marketing and distribution.
The amount of money that you can make as a book author can vary by a lot. As a first-time author, getting published can be challenging, and earning substantial income takes time. If you self-publish and your book becomes popular, you could make a significant amount. But, this isn’t guaranteed.

What makes a city a great food city? Well, just like with any dish, it takes the right ingredients, which can vary. Perhaps the city is located in an agriculturally-rich area. Or the city is a diverse melting pot, creating a place for expression and creativity where chefs can share recipes from around the world or experiment with fusion cuisines. It also needs to have well-stocked grocers that carry specialty items.
No matter what, a great food city should be a place where chefs are supported by a population that loves dining out and supporting local restaurants. Whether you’re a chef looking for where to launch your next venture, or a food lover looking for the next big thing, here are the best cities for chefs to practice their craft.
Finding the best cities for chefs
So then, where do chefs thrive? There are different factors to consider, like grocery cost, population size and specialty stores where chefs can source high-quality ingredients. Taking all those into account, here are the ten best cities for chefs.
10. Grand Rapids, MI
While Grand Rapids may not immediately jump off the page as a great dining destination, you’d be surprised. There’s a robust craft brewing scene, top-notch cafes and a range of beloved, non-chain dining options.
Sourcing fish and seafood from the nearby Great Lakes and using area farms for fresh produce, seasonality is key. Chefs can even dine where they shop. They can tuck into fish and chips at fishmonger and restaurant Fish Lads, or grab a bite at the Grand Rapids Downtown Market while also shopping for produce, olive oil or spices.
Groceries are also the most affordable of all the cities in the top ten. Not only do chefs get to experiment with fresh, regional ingredients in Grand Rapids, but it’s extremely affordable to do so.
9. Santa Fe, NM
With its blend of cultural influences, the food scene in Santa Fe is unparalleled in the Southwest. With Native and Hispanic cuisines leading the playbill, an excellent supporting cast of other global offerings like Indian and Italian rounds it out. And lovers of spicy food find themselves falling under the spell of New Mexico’s famed Hatch green chiles, which feature heavily in local cuisine.
Against such a gastronomically diverse background, chefs also have a wide range of markets and grocers to choose from. There are 0.23 specialty grocers and 0.5 markets per 10,000 residents. So with a population of over 85,000, there are options aplenty. And that population, plus robust summer tourism crowds in Santa Fe, are only too happy to support local chefs.
8. Napa, CA
Ah, Napa.
As the seat of California wine country, this town of just over 78,000 would naturally be a great place for chefs to create exceptional meals. With a strong focus on high-end fares like Italian, French and New American, there’s an incredible variety of tastes to try. And experimenting with pairing with local wines is another plus.
The area’s agricultural history and current reputation for viticulture give Napa chefs easy access to locally-grown, fresh foodstuffs at local markets and grocers. With 0.89 markets per 10,000 residents, chefs can find everything from fresh produce to meats at spots like the Oxbow Public Market. There are also 23 non-chain establishments per capita, making it incredibly easy to support the local restaurant community.
7. Conroe, TX
Sitting on edge of Lake Conroe, the 91,000-population town of Conroe is a lakeside slice of country living within driving distance of Houston. As with many smaller towns, community and hospitality are important. So the local dining is heavily focused on family-run, feel-good food and service. Obviously, barbecue is huge here, as well as Mexican.
Chefs have their pick of the litter when it comes to specialty markets and grocers, with 0.54 grocers and 0.21 markets per 10,000 residents. And the cost of groceries is one of the lowest on the top ten list, so chefs in Conroe can prepare excellent food on a reasonable budget.
6. Cincinnati, OH
Cincinnati chili. Reuben sandwiches. Ice cream. Gooey pizza. Tender ribs. If you love big food with big, bombastic flavor, Cincinnati is the place. From regional treasures like Cincinnati-style chili, which is piled on top of spaghetti or hot dogs, to creative riffs on classics like burgers, chefs here love going big.
As a larger city, grocery costs are elevated, but there’s an abundance of markets and grocers. With 0.42 markets per capita and 0.16 grocers, in a city of over 300,000, there’s always something fresh and delicious close by for chefs to work with. From getting meats and produce at Country Farm Fresh Market to finding global flavors and fun at the famed Jungle Jim’s International Market, accessing the best ingredients is never an issue.
Cincinnati also ranks among the top cities with the most non-chain dining establishments in the top 10. So if you’re a chef looking for a place that welcomes bold flavor and never-say-die energy, head to the Queen City.
5. Asheville, NC
Over the past decade, the Blue Ridge Mountains-based Asheville has emerged as North Carolina’s preeminent food city. This scenic mountain hideaway has it all, from excellent craft brews and comforting Southern fare to elevated fine dining. This dedication to authentic food in all its forms has created a restaurant scene with 35 non-chain restaurants per 10,000 residents.
As a food scene that revels in experimentation and pushing the envelope, chefs in Asheville have an environment in which they can creatively grow and thrive. And the local supply options support that as well, with 0.21 grocers and markets per capita. And don’t forget to try that famous North Carolina barbecue!
4. Pensacola, FL
For seafood chefs seeking new stomping grounds, Pensacola, on the far western end of Florida’s panhandle, has enough attributes to crack the top five best cities for chefs. Sitting right on the edge of Pensacola Bay, fresh seafood is always within reach. The local food scene is rich with delicious seafood spots, as well as Southern and global fare.
With 0.94 markets per capita, chefs can head to specialty stores like Joe Patti’s Seafood and Four Winds International Market for both local and far-flung ingredients. And at 54 non-chain restaurants per 10,000 people, there are plenty of options for the nearly 53,000 residents of Pensacola.
3. West Des Moines, IA
Image source: Rent. / Sun Prairie Apartments
Betcha didn’t know just how vital Iowa is to U.S. agriculture. The Hawkeye State is the nation’s biggest producer of eggs, corn and pork. It also produces 14 percent of cattle in the United States, giving us tender flavorful steaks and beef. With such high-quality produce and meat, it’s no wonder chefs and meat lovers can have a field day here.
In West Des Moines, which forms the western edge of greater Des Moines, chefs will find a particularly hospitable environment for their craft. There’s an abundance of specialty grocers to choose from, like Fresh Thyme Market, providing quality meats, produce and other ingredients. Dining-wise, chefs can express themselves at classic steakhouses and casual brewpubs or branch out into other meat-heavy cuisines like Brazilian. There’s also great Mexican and Asian dining to be found in West Des Moines.
2. Marietta, GA
Snagging second-place for best cities for chefs is the 60,867-strong city of Marietta. Sitting northwest of Atlanta, Marietta is home to a hidden gem food scene. There’s something for everyone, from home-style Southern and farm-to-table to traditional Latin American cuisines.
This gives chefs a large playing field, allowing them to carry on the treasured culinary traditions to American diners, craft dishes from around the world or create exciting combos. Shopping is done at established specialty grocers like Cajun Meat Company, and with 1.15 markets per 10,000 residents, there’s plenty to go around.
One caveat: The cost of groceries is the highest of all the cities on the top 10 list.
1. Greenville, SC
The surrounding states must look on South Carolina with envy, as it’s home to two of the South’s best food cities. First, there’s Charleston (one of our best cities for brunch), and then, No. 1 on the list of the best cities for chefs, is Greenville.
This up-and-coming foodie haven has everything from top-tier Southern comfort food to sophisticated fine dining. Chefs can have fun with flavor at casual neighborhood spots, or get creative with elegant plating at high-end restaurants. And while grocery cost is second only to Marietta on this list, the local population is extremely supportive of their dining scene. There are 59 non-chain restaurants per 10,000 residents, so it’s plain to see that the inhabitants of Greenville love dining out and eating well. Here, chefs are sure to find a supportive and loving audience for whatever they want to cook.
The top 50 cities for chefs
Want to expand your cooking and culinary horizons beyond the top ten? There are many other options for chefs to choose from, as you’ll see from the top 50.
Methodology
To determine the best cities for chefs, we looked at all cities with at least 50,000 residents according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2019 estimates that had at least one specialty grocer, market and non-chain (local) restaurant. That final list included 386 cities spread all across the country. We then ranked each city by the following factors:
The average cost of groceries: The cost of an average grocery bill in the metro area of each city according to cost of living estimates from the Council for Community and Economic Research.
Specialty markets: Per capita and business density calculations in each city from a list of commercially licensed business data. Specialty markets include ethnic, organic and health food.
Food markets: Per capita and business density calculations in each city from a list of commercially licensed business data. Food markets include butchers and farmers markets.
Local restaurants: Per capita and business density calculations in each city from a list of commercially licensed business data. Local restaurants include all dining establishments that are labeled as non-chain.
Each of these factors was weighted equally, and the cities with the best overall score were determined to be the best cities for chefs.
Pet insurance can be a literal lifesaver if your furry friend needs emergency surgery or expensive medical treatment, but the premiums can also put a dent in your budget. NerdWallet gathered quotes from 15 popular insurers and crunched the numbers to help you find the best cheap pet insurance.
We shopped on the insurers’ websites for accident and illness plans in five cities around the U.S. Sample pets were a medium-sized, mixed-breed dog and a domestic shorthair (mixed-breed) cat at ages 2 and 8. Each plan had a $250 deductible, $5,000 annual coverage limit and 80% reimbursement rate. Read our full methodology.
Keep in mind that the affordability of your own rates will vary based on where you live, how much coverage you want, and your pet’s breed and age. Companies that offered the cheapest rates in our tests may not be the best fit for you.

Why we picked it: Lemonade offered some of the most consistently affordable rates for dog insurance in our tests. On top of low premiums, the company also has discounts for paying your bill annually rather than monthly and for insuring more than one pet. If you have another Lemonade policy (such as homeowners, renters or life insurance), you can save even more.
Lemonade stands out for its unique “Giveback” program, which donates a portion of company profits to charities chosen by policyholders. It also shines when it comes to claim processing. After you file your claim through the app, the company uses artificial intelligence to review and pay some claims right away. (Human adjusters review the rest.)

Why we picked it: AKC wasn’t the cheapest option in our tests, but in many states it offers a perk that’s almost impossible to find at any price: coverage for pre-existing conditions. While many companies will pay to treat curable issues that have been symptom-free for six months or a year, they generally won’t cover chronic, incurable conditions that developed before you bought your pet’s policy. So if you enroll a pup with diabetes or a cat with kidney disease, most companies won’t cover treatment for these issues.
AKC is the exception. Once your pet has had a plan for 365 consecutive days, the company may cover its pre-existing conditions. (This coverage isn’t available in all states.) Other bonuses include a multipet discount and a 24/7 vet helpline.

What determines your pet insurance cost?
Each company has its own formula for setting prices, but the following are some of the main factors that will likely influence how much you pay for pet insurance.
Where you live. If you’re in an area with a high cost of living, vet care may be expensive, too — and your premium will go up accordingly.
Your pet’s age. Just like humans, pets tend to develop more health issues as they age. Because older pets are more likely to need veterinary care, their pet insurance will generally cost more than it would for a puppy or kitten.
Your pet’s species and breed. Dogs tend to be more expensive to insure than cats, and certain breeds cost more than others. That’s because some breeds are more susceptible to health conditions such as trouble breathing, joint problems or heart issues.
The coverage you choose. Expect higher prices for more comprehensive plans offering things like unlimited annual payouts and 90% reimbursement for vet expenses. Adding wellness coverage to pay for annual checkups and vaccinations can also run up your costs. Some insurers charge extra to cover certain expenses such as exam fees or physical therapy.
How to find cheap pet insurance
The following tips can help you get the best possible rate for your pet insurance plan.
Shop around. We recommend getting quotes from at least three companies. Keep in mind that the lowest price may not offer the best value if it comes with a higher deductible or less coverage. (A deductible is the amount you need to pay before your insurer starts reimbursing you.)
Customize your coverage. Many insurers let you tweak your price by changing your deductible, adding or reducing coverage, or opting for a different reimbursement rate. For example, you can typically lower your premium if you choose to be reimbursed for only 70% of your vet expenses rather than 80% or 90%. You could also buy an accident-only policy, which will cover injuries like broken bones or snake bites but not illnesses like cancer.
Just be sure you’re comfortable with the tradeoffs you’re making to get a lower premium. The plan may be cheaper, but you’ll be on the hook for more of your pet’s vet bills.
Ask about discounts. Some companies offer savings if you insure more than one animal, serve in the military or buy multiple insurance policies (such as pet and homeowners insurance). You may also be able to save a few bucks by paying your premium in full once a year instead of in monthly installments.
Look for employer benefits. Some companies offer pet insurance at a discounted rate to their employees. Before you choose this option, however, check with the insurer to make sure you can maintain your pet’s coverage even if you leave your current job.
How to compare pet insurance plans
Aside from price, pet insurance plans vary in what they cover and how generously they’ll reimburse your vet bills. Here are a few key things to check before you commit to a pet insurance plan.
What’s covered — and what’s not
Most accident and illness plans cover things like cancer treatments or surgery if your pet gets hurt. But there are types of coverage you can’t always count on.
Say your pet develops periodontal disease and needs to have a few teeth pulled. Some plans will cover this expense; others won’t. Still others might cover it only if you’ve bought optional dental illness coverage. Learn more about pet dental insurance.
Plans may also vary in their coverage of prescription food and supplements, treatment for behavioral issues and rehabilitative therapies.
Finally, check whether your plan will cover vet exam fees. If you bring your pet in for a sick visit, some pet insurers will pay for medication and other treatment but won’t reimburse you for the exam fee.
Reimbursement
One of the most important things to know about a plan is how it will reimburse you for your vet expenses. A handful of companies can pay your vet directly, but in most cases you’ll need to settle the bill yourself and then file a claim for reimbursement.
Check how long it generally takes the companies you’re considering to process claims. Some do so in a matter of days, while others may take up to a month.
You’ll also want to make sure you’re comfortable with your plan’s coverage limit, deductible and reimbursement rate. These factors all work together to determine how much your plan will pay toward your vet expenses.
Say you have a $500 yearly deductible and $5,000 annual coverage limit with a reimbursement rate of 80%. If your dog needs a $2,000 surgery and you haven’t paid anything toward your deductible yet, your plan would cover $1,200. Here’s the math:
$2,000 – $500 deductible = $1,500.
80% reimbursement on the remaining $1,500 bill = $1,200.
You’d still have $3,800 left of your annual limit ($5,000 – $1,200) to spend on any other treatment your pet might need that year.
Waiting periods
There’s generally a waiting period between when you buy your policy and when your coverage begins. For instance, your pet’s illnesses might not be covered for the first 14 days. Some companies have extended waiting periods for certain issues such as knee injuries or hip dysplasia. Learn more about pet insurance waiting periods.

Looking for under the table jobs?
When you’re looking for ways to earn extra cash, under the table jobs can be a route to take. These jobs typically pay with cash only.
These can be part-time jobs, side hustles, or even a full-time career.
Now, with under the table jobs, the person paying you is not paying taxes. But, you still should pay taxes, as it is the law in the U.S.
Key Takeaways
Under the table jobs are a flexible way to earn cash without formal employment.
You can tap into many different job fields, from childcare to handyman services, to make extra money.
If a person pays you in cash, it’s still important to report that income to the IRS. If you don’t, it could be tax evasion, which is illegal.
Best Under the Table Jobs
If you’re looking for ways to earn cash, there are plenty of jobs that you can do under the table.
Some popular options include:
As a handyman, you can fix things around a house, like replacing a bathroom mirror or broken doors. If you’re good with tools and fixing things, this can be a great way to make some money.
If you like sharing what you know, tutoring might be a good side gig for you. You can help kids with their schoolwork or even teach music if you play an instrument.
Babysitting is a classic way to earn cash. You watch kids while their parents are away and might even help them with homework.
Love being outside? Try landscaping or mowing lawns. You can make yards look nice and make good money.
For those who love animals, dog walking or pet sitting are fun ways to make money. Spend time with pets, take them for walks, and make sure they’re fed.
Continue reading below to see the full list and learn more about under the table jobs.
1. Reseller
Resellers buy items and sell them for a higher price to make a profit.
You can find things at low prices from garage sales, thrift stores, or online clearance deals. Then, you sell them in places like eBay, Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, or even to friends and family.
You can sell things like clothes, electronics, toys, and books that people want. It’s usually a good idea to choose items you know a lot about because it makes it easier for you to know a good deal when you see one.
I personally have many friends who are resellers, and I was a reseller in the past as well (before I started blogging full-time!). It can be a great way to make cash income.
Whether you’re looking to make just a little extra cash or if you want a full-time job, this is a good option to look into.
I recommend watching the free webinar Turn Your Passion For Visiting Thrift Stores, Yard Sales & Flea Markets Into A Profitable Reselling Business In As Little As 14 Days to learn how to make money by flipping items.

This free workshop will teach you how to get into the flipping business. It will teach you how to resell furniture, electronics, appliances, and anything else you can find.
2. Childcare
A popular cash job is babysitting. Most moms and dads need good babysitters, and they’re happy to pay a fair amount for someone to watch their kids while they go out for the evening.
Babysitters make a good income these days – typically around $20 per hour.
If you think it might be tough to earn money this way, don’t worry – it’s possible. Just posting a simple message on your Facebook page could connect you with someone who needs a babysitter.
Note: I recommend making sure you check with your city or state before you begin. Also, make sure that your home is safe (if you watch children in your own home) and that you are CPR certified.

3. Home and yard maintenance
When you’re looking for a way to make some extra money, you can do home and yard maintenance jobs. These are tasks people don’t have time to do themselves (or they simply don’t like to do!).
For example, if you like being outdoors, landscaping work might be perfect for you. Jobs in this area include lawn mowing, trimming hedges, and planting flowers.
If you prefer working indoors, you might focus on home maintenance tasks instead. Tasks like house cleaning or helping to organize a garage are commonly needed.
These jobs usually pay in cash at the end of the day or after the job is done. Usually, the homeowner pays you in cash before you go home.
4. Pet groomer
Pet groomers clean pets so that they look nice and healthy (and everyone needs a regular bath!). If you like pets, then you may enjoy being a pet groomer.
Pet groomers can sometimes get paid in cash, especially when you run your own business. I have seen many pet grooming businesses that operate out of a trailer that the person pulls behind their vehicle. They go straight to the person’s home, wash their dog in their mobile dog cleaning trailer, and then collect the cash payment once they are done.
Your work will include brushing and cutting fur, trimming nails, giving baths, and maybe even brushing the pet’s teeth. You make sure pets are clean, comfortable, and looking good. Sometimes, pet owners might also ask you to style their pets’ fur in a special way as well (such as by pinning back fur out of the dog’s eyes).
5. Pet sitter
Working as a pet sitter can be a simple and enjoyable way to earn extra cash.
As a pet sitter, your job is to keep an eye on someone’s pet while they are away. This can include feeding, walking, and playing with the pet to make sure it’s happy and healthy. You may need to stay overnight at the pet owner’s home or the pet may stay with you (it simply depends on what you and the pet owner agree on).
You can find pet sitting jobs on Rover. I have personally used this site countless times to find a pet sitter for my dogs.
Another under the table job similar to this is becoming a house sitter. House sitters watch homes while the owner is away and this can be a great side hustle. I talk more about this in a section further below.
6. House cleaning
When you’re looking for work that’s paid directly in cash, without formal paperwork, you might want to start with house cleaning.
So, what does a house cleaner include? Well, you’ll do things like dusting, vacuuming floors, and cleaning bathrooms. Sometimes, you’ll wash dishes or do laundry. If the house has pets, you might need to clean up after them too. Some house cleaners may even specialize in areas like extensive deep cleans that may take a whole day or even many days (or weeks!).
House cleaners earn between $25 to $50+ an hour for cleaning for others.
To get paid in cash means that you’ll typically work for yourself and get paid once you are done with cleaning for the day or after a week or two.
Getting this kind of business going isn’t costly because you probably already have the cleaning supplies you need (like a mop and vacuum). You can let people know about your services on Facebook, tell your friends and family, or create an account on Care’s website.
7. Dog walker
Dog walkers are exactly that – they walk dogs to make money.
You can find these jobs posted on platforms like Rover or just by posting something on your personal Facebook page advertising your dog walking service.
As a dog walker, your job is to take dogs for their daily walks while their owners are busy. This may be a walk that is around 30 minutes to one hour each time, but it all depends on what you have agreed on with the owner.
Walking pets can earn you about $15 to $25 or even more for each walk per animal.
8. Snow removal
If you’re good with a snow shovel or snowblower, snow removal might be a great job for you. This work can pay cash, making it a common under the table job.
When it snows, many people need help clearing their driveways and sidewalks. Some jobs are for one-time events, while others might need you all winter right after it snows to keep their driveways and sidewalks safe for people to walk or drive on.
You can find snow removal jobs by asking your neighbors or local businesses. Sometimes people put up signs along the roads in neighborhoods or ads online looking for help when there’s a big snowstorm.
People usually pay right after you’re done with the work.
9. Makeup artist
If you enjoy using makeup and know all the latest beauty trends, being a makeup artist can be a fun way to earn money.
It’s a job where you can be creative and help people look their best for events like weddings or photo shoots.
As a makeup artist, you’ll work with different tools like brushes, sponges, and a palette of colors. Your job will be to apply makeup on clients’ faces. You could work with all sorts of people, from friends and family to clients in your area.
10. House sitting
When you house sit, you’re taking care of someone else’s home while they’re away. This could be at a house near where you already live or maybe you fly to a fun vacation destination and watch their house there.
It’s your job to make sure everything stays safe and clean and that nothing happens to the home (such as a frozen water pipe bursts).
You might need to pick up the mail, water plants, or feed pets. Sometimes, people will ask you to stay overnight to make sure the house does not stay empty.
11. Sell at farmers markets
If you’re looking to make some cash, you can start selling at a local farmers market.
Some things that you can sell include fresh produce, homemade goodies, jewelry, unique crafts, or even baking cakes are great items. You’ll want to make sure your product and booth stand out, as there will be a lot of booths around you.
Shoppers at farmers markets typically pay in cash, so you can get paid quickly!
Note: To sell at a farmers market, you might need to get a permit. You can start by checking with your county health department and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) for rules. Every place has different laws, so it’s important to understand what applies to your situation.
12. Have a garage sale
Having a garage sale is a way to earn some extra cash, and you don’t need special skills to get started. Look around your home for things you no longer use or need, and these could be clothes, toys, books, or even bigger pieces like furniture.
Items sold at garage sales typically don’t sell for a ton of money, but it can be a great way to declutter while getting paid cash.
Weekends, especially Saturday mornings, are prime times for yard sales. Make sure to check your local weather forecast as a sunny day can lead to more foot traffic. Once you have your date, gather all the items you plan to sell.
Then, you’ll want to organize your items by category. For example, put all the kitchen items on one table and all the books on another. Price everything clearly – you might use colored stickers for pricing – to avoid confusion.
You can advertise your garage sale a few days before. You can do this by posting on social media (such as by sharing it in local Facebook groups), community bulletin boards, or local classified websites. Signs around your neighborhood can also help draw attention to your sale.
During the sale, you’ll want to have change ready for customers who pay with cash, and you’ll probably want to have a calculator handy if you’re not comfortable doing math in your head.
13. Tutoring
If you’re knowledgeable in a subject, tutoring can be a good job for you. This is a job where you help others, like kids or even adults, to understand things better.
As a tutor, you work one-on-one or with small groups to teach things like math, reading, specialty exams, or even foreign languages.
Harder subjects usually pay more than easier subjects, and you may be able to earn $25 or more per hour as a tutor. You may get paid after each tutoring session. Or, if you are a regular tutor for a person, it may be weekly or even monthly – it depends on the agreement that you have with the person you are tutoring.
14. Painter
As a painter, your job is to paint walls, buildings, and other surfaces.
Your job responsibilities may include preparing surfaces by cleaning and scraping, mixing paint to get the right color, and applying paint with brushes, rollers, or sprayers.
Back when we were selling our first house, we hired a solo painter to come in and paint all the walls. This is a job that you may be able to find as well.
15. Handyman
If you’re good with tools and fixing things around the house, you might think about working as a handyman.
This job involves fixing leaky faucets, patching holes in walls, or putting together furniture. People tend to need help with these small jobs and look for someone who can do them without too much fuss.
You can find handyman jobs on websites like Craigslist or by asking friends and family if they know anyone who needs help.
With the same house I mentioned in the previous section, we also hired a handyman to renovate our bathroom as well as do around 10 other smaller things around our house too. We actually found him through a family friend, and he did so much work for us. It was great!
16. Dance instructor
Being a dance instructor can be a fulfilling under the table job in some cases. You could work with students of all ages, teaching them how to dance or different dance styles.
Of course, you will want to make sure that you are a skilled dancer, as this is not a job that anyone can do.
So, do you have experience in styles like ballet, hip-hop, or salsa? Or something else?
You can start by giving classes in your community or looking for local studios in need of instructors.
17. Auto mechanic
Working as an auto mechanic could be a great under the table job for you, and there are always people who need work done on their cars.
You’ll typically charge less than if a person would be going to a car dealership or a car mechanic business. People would usually be looking to hire a cash-pay mechanic if they were wanting to save some money.
As a mechanic, you make sure cars are running smoothly. Your job might include changing oil, replacing brakes, and making sure the engine is in top shape. Of course, you need to know what you are doing, as people are trusting their expensive cars and their lives with the repairs and updates that you do.
Working like this usually means you have to find your own customers. Good places to start are local ads or online platforms like Craigslist (start by looking under the “gig” section).
18. Photographer
Becoming a photographer can be a fun way for you to earn money if you are good with photography.
As a photographer, you can decide to work as an independent contractor, which means you are your own boss. This might involve getting paid in cash or a check for your services.
The different types of photography you can get into include:
Portrait photography – You might take photos of people and families, capturing special moments. Families like to have memories of their loved ones, and they’re willing to pay you for this service.
Event photography – This includes taking photographs at events like weddings or birthday parties. People like to remember these big events and may hire you to make sure they have great photos to look back on.
Commercial photography – This is for businesses that need photos of their products, services, real estate, and more.

19. Sell firewood
Selling firewood can be a way to make money, especially if you live in an area where wood is used for heating or camping. Homeowners in colder places are always buying wood for their wood burning fireplaces and stoves, so this can be a good way to make some extra money by selling truckloads of wood.
First, you need to get firewood. If you have trees on your land, you might be able to cut your own wood.
After you have wood to sell, think about how you will sell it. You can sell wood online on websites where people buy and sell things in your community. You can also have a place at your house where people come to buy wood from you.
If you don’t have trees of your own, look for jobs where you can gather wood. Some people will even pay you to take away old trees or wood piles they don’t want.
Note: I recommend that you always keep in mind to follow the rules about selling wood where you live. Some places have rules about moving firewood to stop bugs and diseases from spreading to other trees.
20. Junk hauler
Being a junk hauler might be a great fit for you if you don’t mind a bit of heavy lifting. People tend to hire junk haulers when they have big, heavy things that they want to get rid of after all.
As a junk hauler, you get to help people clear out unwanted items from their homes or businesses. These items could be anything from old furniture to broken appliances.
Your job will mostly involve picking up and removing junk. You’ll need to have a reliable vehicle, maybe a truck or a van, that can carry all the items. Sometimes, you’ll be recycling things or taking them to a landfill.
You can find junk hauling gigs on websites or by signing up with companies that look for contractors. These could be one-time jobs or regular work, perfect if you’re looking for a side hustle or even to grow your own junk removal business.
You’ll generally get paid after you complete a job and since it’s often under the table, payment is usually in cash. This means you get paid directly, with no checks or direct deposits.
We personally had to call a junk hauler when we had several pieces of rotten wood that we needed thrown away – it was several hundred pounds and extremely messy – not something that we wanted to mess with and we also wanted it gone right away. That same day, a junk hauler came by and took it for $125. We paid him cash and he took it to the dump for us. It was so convenient for us and good business for him.
21. Rent out a spare room
If you have an empty room at your place, you might want to think about renting it out. This can be a good way to make some money on the side without a lot of work.
I have had several roommates over the years. We would rent out our spare room to long-term renters and people that we personally knew (such as friends and my sister).
To find a roommate and make money from renting your place, you can tell people about it in different ways. You can share it on your own Facebook page, post an ad on websites like Craigslist, make a rental listing on Airbnb, and try other methods.
Frequently Asked Questions
When you’re looking into jobs that pay cash, also known as under the table jobs, you might have a lot of questions.
What are under the table jobs?
Under the table jobs are ways you can earn money that’s usually paid in cash and not recorded officially by an employer. This means no tax forms are involved and no taxes are taken out of your pay right away (but you should still pay them!).
Is under the table work legal?
Okay, this is a great question to ask. After all, this is a whole article on how to find under the table jobs. So, does that mean these types of jobs are legal?
Well, working under the table can be tricky when it comes to the law. Your employer might pay you in cash without giving you a contract. While it might seem straightforward, not reporting this cash income to the IRS is considered tax evasion. Earning cash itself isn’t illegal, but failing to report it on your taxes can lead to problems.
What are the positives of working for cash?
When you get paid under the table, you get to keep all the money you earn immediately. This kind of setup is nice for jobs like babysitting or doing yard work, and you don’t have to wait for a paycheck. But, remember, you still have to pay taxes! So, the main positive is that you are paid cash right away, instead of having to wait a couple of weeks.
What are possible risks of working under the table? Is it OK to get paid under the table? Can an employee get in trouble for working under the table?
Working under the table can be risky. If the IRS finds out you’re not reporting your income, both you and your employer could face penalties. Also, you won’t have official records of your income, which can make it tricky if you need to show how much you earn for things like loans or renting a place to live.
What jobs can be paid under the table?
You can find jobs like babysitting, pet sitting, house cleaning, or gardening that pay under the table. These jobs usually pay cash because they are informal and may not involve paperwork. There are many other jobs that I didn’t even get into in the list above, such as becoming a personal assistant (doing things like grocery shopping and setting up appointments), personal trainer, graphic designer (making logos and more), and so on.
How do I find under the table jobs? How can you find local jobs that pay in cash?
To find these jobs, you can start by asking friends or neighbors if they need help with anything. You can also look at community bulletin boards or online classifieds for local job opportunities.
How do I ask for payment under the table?
If you’re looking for cash payment for a job, be honest and up front with your employer. Tell them you prefer cash payment, but realize that it’s usually smaller gigs that will pay cash and not more regular job opportunities. Keep in mind, though, that all income should still be reported for tax purposes.
How can you find jobs that pay under the table on Craigslist?
On Craigslist, you can filter your job search by using keywords like “cash pay” or “under the table.”
Under the Table Jobs – Summary
I hope you enjoyed this article on how to find the best under the table jobs.
Getting paid cash right after you complete a job is nice – you don’t have to worry about waiting for a payment and you can pay your bills right away.
There are many ways to find under the table jobs, such as by asking people that you know or by looking at gig/job websites in your area.
Now, there are pros and cons to being paid under the table. Being paid under the table means you get cash quickly. However, there are risks like missing out on legal protections and benefits, and if not reported, it might lead to tax evasion consequences.
So, when working under the table, it’s important to keep track of how much money you make. After all, you’re responsible for your own records and taxes, even if you’re paid in cash.
So, you do still need to pay taxes on the income that you make.
When you work under the table, you’re often working part-time or full-time but without the usual job benefits. If you’re planning ahead, think about how these jobs might affect your career later on. Eventually, it may be a good idea to find a job with more regular benefits where you pay taxes straight out of your income.

Best Ways To Make $200 Fast
Below are the best ways to make $200 quickly.
Selling items from around your home
The quickest way to make $200 fast is to find stuff you already own and sell it.
When you’re in a pinch for cash, your home can be a treasure trove of items you can sell. Start by gathering gently used items or those you no longer need, such as electronics (phones, laptops), furniture (couches, coffee tables), clothing and accessories (especially branded ones), gift cards, and collectibles and antiques.
You can sell on Craigslist (ideal for bulkier items like furniture, tires, cars, etc., where local pickup is more practical), Facebook Marketplace (great for reaching a large local audience quickly), eBay (perfect for unique or more valuable items where shipping isn’t an issue), thrift stores (get cash on the spot at places like Plato’s Closet), having yard or garage sales (typically get less per item but can get rid of a lot of things at once), and more.
I have sold a ton of used items over the years such as clothing, jewelry, car tires, furniture, and more. It is easy and someone probably wants what you’re selling.

Rent out your storage space
If you’ve got extra space in your home, be it an attic, basement, or spare room, renting it out for storage is an excellent way to earn extra cash.
A site to use to rent out your space is Neighbor. This website helps you earn money by renting out space you’re not using.
You can make up to $15,000 a year by renting out your garage, driveway, basement, or even a closet with Neighbor. You get to choose the prices and decide which reservations you want to say yes to and host.
Take paid online surveys
Earning $200 a day just by answering surveys isn’t normally possible (unless you are doing focus groups or paid research studies), but you can reach your goal by combining survey earnings with other ideas.
When I was repaying my student loans, I answered lots of surveys each week. I did this before work, during lunch, or after work. It was convenient because I could do it whenever I had free time.
Survey companies pay you for answering surveys, watching videos, and testing products. Sometimes, you might even receive free products to evaluate. The best part is that joining survey companies is free!
Some of the paid online survey companies I recommend are:
Here are 11 Paid Online Survey Sites if you want to learn more.
Answer questions in a focus group
A focus group is like a paid online survey, as I mentioned before, but you can make a lot more money from it.
I’ve done a focus group in the past that paid me around $400 for 75 minutes of my time. While that’s a bit more than usual, most focus groups pay anywhere from around $50 to over $100 per hour. Compensation differs significantly depending on the study’s length and topic, but higher-paying studies do exist.
Lots of consumer research companies pay people like us to share our opinions. The companies use our feedback to make their products and services better.
One focus group company that I recommend is User Interviews. User Interviews recruits participants to answer surveys and share their feedback.
10
User Interviews pays very well for market research studies and these are some of the highest paying online surveys, with each paying $50 to $100 or more. The average pays over $60.
Play games on your phone
If you’re looking to make $200 quickly, your smartphone can be a surprisingly interesting way. By playing games on your phone, you can earn real money.
Game apps pay real money rewards because they make money from ads and in-app purchases. They share a part of their earnings with you to motivate you to keep playing their games.
The best game apps that pay real money include KashKick, Swagbucks, and InboxDollars.
When picking gaming apps to make money, check reviews and learn about how you get paid. Be careful with apps that ask you to pay to play or promise rewards that sound too good to be true. Also, keep track of the time you spend playing games to make sure it stays worth it.
Rent out your unused RV
If you have an RV that’s sitting idle, you may want to turn it into income by renting it out. Many people have RVs they don’t use very often. Instead of letting it just sit there, you might make extra money by renting it out. Yes, you could potentially make $200 a day by renting your RV to others.
Popular sites such as RVshare work similarly to Airbnb, connecting you with potential renters. They handle the bookings and insurance, making the process easier.
Another idea is to park your RV somewhere and list it on Airbnb. I’ve seen many RVs, campers, trailers, and more on Airbnb available for rent. Just make sure that you can rent it out in the location you want to leave it, as not all campgrounds or neighborhoods may allow it.
10
RVshare is one of the best money-making sites because it helps travelers save money by cutting out the middleman and offering RV rentals directly from RV owners. If you have an RV that is sitting around, then you may be able to make $100 to $300+ a day.
Proofread
If you like finding mistakes in written content and want to know how to make $200 a day, proofreading could be a good fit for you. It can be a part-time job or a full-time work-from-home career too.
It’s a job where you can make $200 in a day, and many proofreaders earn around $40,000 a year or even more.
Proofreaders check for mistakes in articles, ads, books, student papers, emails, transcripts, and more.
To become a proofreader, all you need is a laptop or tablet, an internet connection, and the ability to spot mistakes and errors.

Virtual assist
A virtual assistant (VA) is someone who helps a person, company, or business owner with administrative and business tasks, making sure everything runs smoothly. They’re just like in-person assistants, but they work from home and online.
I used to work as a virtual assistant for small business owners. I didn’t have prior experience, but I learned the skills while on the job. It not only helped me earn a good income but also allowed me to work from home. I also have virtual assistants who work for me, so I know how helpful they are! This is a very in-demand job field to get into.
Virtual assistant tasks may include:
Managing a company’s Facebook account
Managing a calendar
Scheduling appointments and meetings
Creating slideshows and presentations
Managing an email inbox and handling customer support
And more.
Typically, when you begin working as a virtual assistant, you might earn around $15 to $20 per hour. However, in some cases, you could start with twice or even three times that amount. It depends on the type of work you do and the services you provide.
This can be a full-time job or a side hustle too!

Selling handmade goods and crafts
If you want to earn an extra $200 fast, selling the things you make by hand, like crafts or handmade goods, is a great idea.
A popular place to sell handmade goods includes Etsy, which has a worldwide audience looking to purchase unique handcrafted items. You can also sell via social media or even rent a booth at a local craft fair.
You can sell all different kinds of handmade items such as jewelry, soap, furniture, art, photography, clothing, personalized gifts (such as engraved items), and more.
I have personally bought handmade goods all of these ways.
Freelance write
A person who freelance writes can make $200 in a single day.
Freelance writers work for clients, like websites, magazines, marketing teams, book publishers, and others. They write different things such as articles, blog posts for search engine optimization (SEO), marketing content, newsletters, press releases, and more.
You can find freelance writing jobs in many ways such as by searching on Fiverr or Upwork, looking to see if any of your favorite sites are hiring writers, networking with people in the industry you want to write in, and more.
I’ve been a freelance writer for a long time, and many of my friends also have this job. It’s a great way to make $200 a day or more all from home.

Transcribe
If you’re looking to make $200 quickly, transcription could be a great option. With a fast typing speed and strong language skills, you can convert audio files to text for pay.
Transcription is when you change spoken words from audio or video into a written document. Many businesses need transcriptionists because they need to convert audio and video into text.
New transcriptionists usually make about $15 per hour when they begin, and the good thing is, you don’t need any previous experience to get started.

Blog
Starting a blog doesn’t instantly make you $200 on the first day because it takes time to set it up. However, with time and effort, bloggers can make $200 a day in the future.
A blog is a website with articles, like what you’re reading now. You can create a blog on topics such as personal finance, recipes, travel, pet care, family life, and more. There are many different types of blogs out there.
You can make money from a blog by partnering with companies for sponsorships, showing ads, doing affiliate marketing (for example, selling a product listed on Amazon), and selling products like ebooks, candles, T-shirts, and more directly on your blog.
This is what I do to make money, and I earn well over $200 a day online. It did take me around 6 months to make my first $100 with my blog, so it does take time to get started. It took me about a year to reach around $5,000 a month and around 2 years to get to $10,000 a month.

Becoming a dog walker is a fun way to make some quick cash if you love pets, especially dogs. You can easily get started by signing up with well-known dog walking apps dedicated to connecting dog walkers with pet owners.
Here are some steps to help you begin:
Register on Dog Walking Apps – Platforms like Rover are great for finding dog walking jobs. You could earn around $15 to $18 per hour depending on your experience and the local demand for dog walkers.
Create a Profile – Highlight your experience with dogs and any references you might have.

My sister as well as my husband’s mother are both dog walkers on Rover, and they both enjoy this side hustle.
Sell printables on Etsy
Selling printables on Etsy can be a quick way to earn some extra cash.
Printables are digital files that customers can download and print themselves. These can include things like planners, art prints, stickers, learning tools, worksheets, invites, and organizational tools.
You most definitely have used printables in your life, and so have most people. I buy printables all the time because they make my life so much easier – and it’s so nice to just print things out and have them more easily accessible for when I need them.
One great thing about selling printables is that you don’t have to print and send anything yourself. The customer pays for the design, and they print it out on their own.
Here’s how you can get started:
Step 1: Find Your Niche
Determine what kind of printables you’re passionate about. Many people specialize in a certain type of printable, such as home, wedding, organizing, education, etc.
Research what’s popular and in demand. See what kind of printables people are actually buying right now.
Step 2: Create Your Printables
Use design tools like Canva or Adobe Illustrator.
Make sure your design is original and appealing.
Step 3: Set Up Your Etsy Shop
Create a memorable and easy shop name.
Set up shop policies and fill in all the details.
Step 4: List Your Products
Take attractive product photos or create digital mockups.
Write clear and compelling product descriptions so that potential customers can find your printables.
Price your printables competitively.
Step 5: Promote Your Shop
Utilize Etsy’s built-in SEO by using relevant keywords in your listings.
Share your printables on social media platforms.
Consider Etsy Ads for additional promotion.

Deliver groceries and food
Grocery delivery is a service that is becoming more and more popular. I’ve used it several times myself when I didn’t have time to shop or didn’t have a car available. This service is likely to keep growing.
If you’re looking to make quick cash, you can try delivering groceries and food. You have the flexibility to create your own schedule, and payment can be received pretty quickly – sometimes even within an hour.
Delivering groceries is a popular extra job, and all you need is a valid driver’s license and a car.
You get paid for each delivery and keep all your tips. Platforms like Instacart and Shipt can help you earn around $15 to $20 per hour.
Here are a couple of options for you to start earning with food delivery:
Instacart: As an Instacart shopper, you can choose to shop for groceries or both shop and deliver to customers. Being able to cash out your earnings instantly is a big plus.
Shipt: Enjoy shopping at stores like Target and CVS? With Shipt, you can earn by shopping for others. It’s a great way to combine earning with a task you already enjoy.
Sign up to become an Instacart shopper here.
Related to this: You can also deliver restaurant meals in your spare time through companies like DoorDash and Uber Eats.
Drive for Uber or Lyft
Earning $200 quickly may seem hard, but you may be able to reach this goal by driving for ride-sharing services like Uber or Lyft.
Here’s what you need to know:
Sign Up – Both Uber and Lyft require you to have a valid driver’s license, meet age requirements, pass a background check, and have an eligible car.
Flexibility – You have the freedom to choose your working hours. Whether it’s an hour, over the weekend, or throughout the week.
Earnings – Income can vary, but it’s possible to earn between $20 to $25 per hour on average. At this rate, driving for 10 hours can help you reach your $200 target.
Maximize Promotions – Keep an eye out for special promotions or peak time surge pricing (such as by driving during weekend nights or during a baseball game) as these can really boost your earnings.
Expenses like gas and vehicle maintenance will come out of your earnings, so it’s important to work efficiently and choose high-demand times and areas to increase your income.
Tutor
Tutors who know subjects well, like math, language, science, graphic design, and more, help students get better at those subjects.
Becoming an online tutor depends on the subject you want to teach. You need experience in that area, but there are options for beginners too. Tutors for advanced subjects, like calculus or college entrance exams, usually earn more than those teaching simpler topics.
Rates vary from $15 to over $100 per hour, depending on the subject and where you offer your tutoring services.

Sign up for quick Craigslist jobs
You can make $200 quickly using your local Craigslist, which has short-term jobs and side hustles listed under “gigs.”
Some gigs I’ve seen include painting a room, running errands, passing out flyers, handyman work, loading a moving truck, shoveling snow, pet sitting, transporting a boat, and more.
You can also find quick gig side hustles through a company called Taskrabbit as well!
Note: When using Craigslist for odd jobs, be cautious of scams. If something appears too good to be true, it probably is. For instance, no one is likely to pay you $2,000 for a mystery shop or a 30-minute survey. It’s important to stay alert and choose opportunities that are realistic and trustworthy. Simply skip it if you have doubts!
Get a roommate
If you’re looking to make $200 quickly, getting a roommate can be one way to do so, and if you have an extra room at home, you can make extra money by renting it out on platforms like Airbnb or finding a long-term roommate.
Renting out a room long-term could earn you around $200 or much more, depending on the room and its location. It’s a good way to utilize your extra space for additional income.
I have personally had several roommates in the past, and it was a good source of income. Plus, we had the extra space anyway that was unused. We charged around $400 a month per room, but nowadays you can definitely get a lot more (especially depending on where you live).
Here’s a quick step-by-step guide to finding a roommate and getting paid:
Advertise Your Space – You will need to find ways to get the word out about the spare room you want to rent out. You can do this on Craigslist, your personal Facebook page, placing a post in a local Facebook group, and more.
Vet Potential Roommates – You don’t want just anyone living with you as they will be sharing your space! Here are some ways to vet potential roommates:
Interviews: Have a conversation to make sure everyone is compatible.
References: Ask for and check personal and rental references.
Discuss Financials – This is all about money, so money definitely needs to be talked about and agreed on. You’ll want to think about things like:
Rent: Determine the monthly charge for rent.
Utilities: Decide how you’ll split costs like electricity, internet, and water. Will the monthly rent include all of the bills or will you split the utilities?
Set House Rules – Rules like quiet hours, guest policies, and cleaning responsibilities help avoid conflicts.
Create a Formal Agreement – Writing an agreement will lay everything out so that there is no confusion later.
Lease Addendum: If you have a lease, add your roommate officially.
Roommate Agreement: Outline terms of rent, bills, and house rules.

If you want to take it a step further, you could even get into real estate investing. You can learn more about this option at How This 34 Year Old Owns 7 Rental Homes.
Rent out baby items, such as a crib
If you’re looking to make $200 fast, you can rent out your gently used baby items to traveling families. By listing a crib, stroller, or car seat on rental platforms, you can help ease the travel burdens for parents while earning extra cash.
Here are some ideas of what you can rent out:
Cribs
Strollers
Car seats
High chairs
Toys
A website called BabyQuip lets you rent out baby equipment. On average, people using BabyQuip can make about $1,000 a month, and some earn over $10,000 monthly.
Redeem credit card rewards
If you have a credit card, then there’s a good chance that you are earning points by simply spending like you normally do.
Or, you could even sign up for a new card that has a good signup bonus to earn more points.
With rewards credit cards, you can turn your points into cash back. Here’s how it works: whenever you use your credit card to buy something, you earn points as a reward for spending money.
I have rewards credit cards and I earn points every single time I shop or pay a bill, and I don’t have to do anything special. Just pay my bills and expenses like I normally do! In fact, I just signed up for a new rewards credit card with a great signup bonus today with a signup bonus value of over $800.
Two credit cards that I personally like include:
Important note: Making the most of credit card rewards is smart only if you use your credit card responsibly. It’s not a good idea to accumulate debt just to get rewards because debt with interest is neither free nor beneficial. To really earn money from credit card rewards, you will want to make sure to pay your credit card balance in full every month.

What do you think is the best way to make $200 fast?
It’s no secret that interest rates are high. Though that may be good news for savers, it’s a harsh reality if you’re in the market for a new home. After all, high mortgage rates result in high mortgage payments. And, every quarter of a point of mortgage interest could represent thousands of dollars over the life of the loan.
Today’s high interest rates are the result of the Federal Reserve’s work to temper inflation. But with inflation cooling, many experts predict that lower interest rates are on the horizon — a beacon of hope for homebuyers.
But when will mortgage rates start to fall? Will they drop below 5% in 2024? And is it even worth waiting for lower rates to buy a home? Here’s what you need to know.

Current 30-year mortgage rates are averaging well over 7%. If it seems like it wasn’t long ago that rates were hovering below 3%, that’s because it wasn’t. Although sub-3% mortgage rates are likely a long way off, what are the chances that rates will fall to 5% in 2024?
Rates are currently high because the Federal Reserve has used increases in the federal funds rate target to combat inflation. That target sets the foundation for interest rates on loans.
The good news is that inflation is cooling, and many experts expect interest rates to move in a downward direction in 2024. Then again, a two-point drop would be significant, and even if rates fall, they’re not likely to get down to 5% within the next year.
After all, the Federal Reserve typically moves slowly when it comes to monetary policy changes. The central bank doesn’t want to shock the market by making moves too quickly.
Why you shouldn’t wait for 5% mortgage rates to buy a home
“Regardless of what the Fed does with respect to rates, I would never advise prospective homebuyers to try to time the market or trajectory of mortgage rates,” says Bob Driscoll, SVP and director of residential lending at Rockland Trust Bank. “Instead, they should focus on the factors they can control, such as the timing that works best for them in their unique financial and life circumstances and the values they are seeking in a home. Assessing these factors will result in a much higher pay-off emotionally for homebuyers in 2024.”
Here are a few other reasons why waiting for mortgage rates to drop could be a mistake:
Find out how affordable a mortgage loan can be now.
You could be waiting for quite a while
As noted, the Federal Reserve typically moves slowly when they make monetary policy changes. As a result, if rates do fall to 5%, it will likely take at least a couple of years to happen, barring some drastic, unexpected economic changes.
Ultimately, chances are you won’t be able to wait too long when it’s time to shop for a new home. You may need to move for a new job or because your lease is ending, or any number of other factors that might come into play. The simple fact is that you may not be able to wait the years it could take for mortgage rates to fall back to, or below, 5%.
Competition may get tougher
The housing market is a competitive one, but it’s not nearly as competitive as it was when interest rates were lower. After all, as interest rates rise, potential buyers leave the market. That means when interest rates fall, more buyers will likely enter the market.
When more buyers enter the market, it will be harder for you to make your offer stand out among the competition. Moreover, the law of supply and demand dictates that prices must rise alongside demand unless growth in supply keeps up — which isn’t likely in the housing market. So, if you wait too long, competition could drive prices higher.
You’re not building equity as you wait
If you don’t own your home, you’re probably renting. After all, you need to live somewhere. But there’s an inherent problem with renting. When you rent your home, you make monthly rent payments, but you don’t build a single dime in equity. As soon as the month is over, the value of your rent payment, at least to you, is spent.
Even if you purchase a home while mortgage interest rates are high, you’ll be building equity in your home with each mortgage payment. That’s equity you can fall back on in the future if times get tough.
Get on track to building equity by finding the right mortgage loan now.
The bottom line
Mortgage rates aren’t likely to fall to 5% any time soon, and waiting for them to do so could be a big mistake. Instead, consider buying a home now and taking advantage of a market with less competition. Then, when interest rates fall to a level you’re comfortable with for the long term, refinance your mortgage to take advantage of lower rates.

Landlords or property managers are essential people in the apartment or home rental process. They help you sign and understand the lease, fix and address issues within your apartment, ensure the apartment and complex remain safe and clean and are your go-to person for any problems.
But, it’s important to know the boundaries of what a property manager can and cannot do. Read on for more information about landlord-tenant law and your rights as a renter. Knowing these 10 things a landlord cannot do will help you feel safe in your home.
1. Enter without proper notice
Your landlord is not allowed to enter your apartment without giving proper notice.
In many states, the landlord may not enter without first giving 24-hours notice. The format of notice may vary from place to place. Some apartment contracts state that notice must come in written or electronic form. Double-check your lease before moving in so you can know what to expect.
Once the landlord has permission, the tenant must let them into the apartment. Property managers usually enter to make repairs, to show the apartment to future tenants or to perform a routine check.
The only time the landlord may enter without notice is if there is a true emergency.
2. Force a tenant to leave
While evicting a tenant is legal, doing it without going through proper legal channels is not. This means that the landlord must give the tenant notice before evicting them.
The amount of notice does vary from place to place — ranging anywhere from days to months. If the landlord evicts a tenant without doing it properly, they can face serious consequences.
They also cannot turn off the tenant’s utilities without notice, especially if the apartment is in an area with extreme weather.
3. Raise your rent randomly
Once you sign a lease, it is a legally binding contract. This means that the landlord can not randomly raise the rent without cause.
There are a few instances where the rent can go up —some of these include the addition of a pet or significant remodeling.
The other time rent can go up is if the apartment is within the city’s rent control area. These usually state that landlords can raise the rent only by a certain percentage as specified. This is something you’ll want to check before signing a lease. However, outside of these situations, the rental rate negotiated in your initial lease holds strong.
4. Discriminate against a tenant
Landlords can not discriminate against current or future tenants. According to the Fair Housing Act, landlords cannot discriminate based on nationality, gender, race, disability or family status.
The Fair Housing Act also states that the landlord cannot say that an apartment is not available when it is, can’t harass you and can’t end a lease due to race, gender or family status.
5. Prohibit service animals
If you have a trained service animal according to the Americans with Disabilities Act, a landlord must rent to you even if there is a “no pet” rule.
Service animals, such as seeing-eye dogs, are exempt. You’ll likely have to show paperwork about your service animal, but, you will be able to rent an apartment with one under the law.
6. Allow lead content
Landlords are not allowed to rent apartments that contain lead-based paint or any lead content. This is more common in older homes or apartments but it is still something to consider.
They are responsible for checking the lead content, making repairs and ensuring they do not rent dangerous apartments with lead exposure to people.
7. Use a security deposit for wear and tear
Security deposits are part of almost every leasing contract. They are typically held for the duration of the lease and given back when the lease is over.
The landlord is not allowed to keep the security deposit to recover things such as normal wear-and-tear.
The only time they can keep it is if there are unusual repairs that aren’t normal wear-and-tear or if you break a lease early. They also aren’t allowed to charge a security deposit that is over the state’s limit. This changes from state to state so make sure to double-check what your state limits it at.
8. Refuse to make reasonable repairs
A landlord’s job is to make sure that your apartment is safe and livable. Refusing to make reasonable repairs could end in legal action against them.
Things such as removing mold or lead paint or fixing the utilities are something the landlord must help with. These are repairs that could endanger the tenant.
It is also illegal for landlords to ask tenants to make major repairs such as fixing the balconies or stairs.
9. Use your space
As per your leasing agreement, it is the renter’s right to the space you’re leasing. This means that the landlord cannot withhold space that is legally yours.
Spaces such as parking garages or storage units cannot be used for the landlord’s personal use.
10. Change the locks
Your landlord is not allowed to change your locks without letting you know. If they want to remove you from the apartment, they must go through legal channels to do so. Changing your locks without notice could end in serious legal troubles for the landlord.
What to do if your landlord breaks these rules
If you find yourself with a landlord that breaks any of these laws, you have some options. First, file a claim with the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Make requests in writing and photograph any damage if your landlord refuses to make repairs. Should your landlord continue to neglect the problems, then you can call your local department of health and report the problems. If your landlord changes the locks without telling you, you can call the police. The landlord does not have the right to refuse you access to your apartment, even if they want to evict you. If you ever file a legal claim against your landlord they are not legally allowed to retaliate against you.
Know your rights
It is so important to know your renters’ rights. There are landlord-tenant laws in place for this very reason. Your landlord can not take advantage of you when renting an apartment. Make sure to do your research on landlord-tenant law and know exactly what a landlord cannot do so you’re not taken advantage of. With this knowledge, you’ll be better served and ready to rent an apartment.

If you’re in the market for a home, you may have come across the term “single-family home” and wondered what it means and if that is what you are looking to buy.
Generally, a single-family home refers to a freestanding home set on its own piece of property. It can be occupied by a single individual or a large family, as long as it’s occupied by a single household.
Owning a single family home comes with a number of benefits, including more privacy and space than other types of residential properties. However, this type of home also tends to come with a higher price tag and more responsibility. Here’s a closer look at what single family homes are and the pros and cons of buying one.
What Is a Single-Family Home?
Generally speaking, the term single-family home refers to a home that is designed for, occupied by, and maintained by one person or household. When you buy a single-family home, you will own both the home and the property it sits on. This is in contrast to other types of properties, such as condominiums (condos), where you only own the interior of your unit and share ownership of common areas with other homeowners in the complex.
In most cases, a single-family home is defined as one that is freestanding and not attached to homes owned by other individuals. However, the government has a broader definition. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, a single-family home includes fully detached homes, as well as semi-detached row houses and townhouses. In the case of attached units, the units must be separated by a ground-to-roof wall in order to be classified as a single-family structure. Also, these units must not share heating/air-conditioning systems or utilities.
In some places, a single-family home is defined in part by how many kitchens it has. Depending on zoning laws, adding a second full kitchen to an in-law’s apartment, for example, can cause a house to be redefined as a multi-family building. If you’re planning on doing this type of renovation, be sure to check local zoning laws beforehand.
Whether a home is classified as a single-family or multi-family home can have an impact on the type of mortgages you qualify for. Both single-family homes and two- to four-unit properties fall under residential lending guidelines. (A property with five or more units is considered commercial property.) You can use a conventional mortgage to purchase a home with four or fewer units, whether it’s a single- or multi-family home. If you’re buying a multi-family home with five or more units, you must use a commercial mortgage. Commercial mortgages have different terms than residential mortgages do. 💡 Quick Tip: When house hunting, don’t forget to lock in your home mortgage loan rate so there are no surprises if your offer is accepted.
First-time homebuyers can prequalify for a SoFi mortgage loan, with as little as 3% down.
Pros and Cons of a Single-Family Home
As you shop for homes, it’s important to consider the various advantages and disadvantages of a single-family residence.
Some of the advantages are:
• More space Single-family homes tend to offer more space than other types of housing, and it belongs to you alone. They may have large yards where children and dogs can play or where you can plant a vegetable garden. They may also have storage in attics, garages, or basements, which aren’t shared between multiple units.
• Privacy Single-family units that don’t share walls with neighbors offer more privacy. You are less likely to hear neighbors’ activities, and they are less likely to be bothered by yours.
• More design features Single-family homes may be available in a broader range of designs and layouts, from Cape Cods or colonials to ranch homes and contemporary designs. You can also make changes to the building or landscape design without input from neighbors with a shared interest in the space.
• Room to grow Single-family homes may offer you more options for additions if you have a growing family or if aging parents may come to live with you. For example, single family detached homes with larger plots of land may allow additions that wouldn’t be possible in condo units.
• May offer higher appreciation Single-family homes tend to appreciate in value more than condos and townhouses.
• Option to rent As the sole owner of a single-family home, you have the option to rent out the house if you decide to move and wish to hang on to the property.
While these factors are attractive, it’s important to weigh potential disadvantages of buying a single-family home as well. Here are some to keep in mind:
• More expensive Single-family homes tend to be more expensive than other types of homes. That can mean a larger down payment and higher closing costs, and your mortgage payments may be higher.
• More maintenanceUnless your single-family home is part of a homeowner association (HOA) that provides basic services, you’ll be in charge of all home maintenance like lawn mowing and roof repairs. You’ll either have to take the time to do it yourself or hire help.
• Possible HOA fees Planned developments usually require HOA fees to cover the upkeep of common areas and shared structures.
• Less income potential With multi-family homes, you have the option to live in one unit while renting out the others. This allows you to bring in regular income to cover the cost of the mortgage and maintenance expenses.
Finding a Single-Family Home
Before you start looking for a single-family home, you’ll want to first determine how much home you can afford. You might start by calculating mortgage costs and getting prequalified for a home loan; prequalification often only takes a few minutes and provides an estimate of how much you might be able to borrow and at what rate (without impacting your credit).
You’re probably already searching real estate listings online and noting the property types. You might also want to do some research on housing market trends, especially if you live in one of the nation’s real estate hot spots.
You may also want to engage a real estate agent. They have expertise in local housing and zoning laws, know whether a list price is fair or above or below average, and can help you negotiate the price of a home you’re interested in buying.
If there’s any question about how a house is zoned, you can often look up zoning information through a particular city’s website.

Who Should Get a Single-Family Home?
Single-family homes are a good fit for people who can cover the higher price tag, want privacy and flexibility, and are willing to take on a lot of responsibility.
If you qualify as a first-time homebuyer, there may be help available to buy a single-family home in the form of down payment assistance and low- or no-interest loans.
If you’re looking for a more affordable home and don’t mind giving up some privacy, you might want to consider a condo or townhouse.
A condo is like an apartment but is available for purchase. These units share walls with neighboring units, but you generally won’t have to worry about maintaining the property.
A townhouse, on the other hand, has multiple stories and will share one or two walls with other units. Like condos, townhouses are typically less expensive than single-family homes. Unlike a condo, you’ll own the property that the townhouse sits on.
If you’re looking to invest in real estate, you might consider buying a multi-family home. While this will likely cost more than a single-family home, you may be able to recoup the added cost (and, over time, earn even more) by collecting rent from tenants. 💡 Quick Tip: To see a house in person, particularly in a tight or expensive market, you may need to show the real estate agent proof that you’re preapproved for a mortgage. SoFi’s online application makes the process simple.

Do you ever feel like you’re just living your life between your home and the office? Does it get crowded feeling like home is completely your responsibility, and the office is only for work? If so, you might need to find what is often referred to as a “third place.” A third place is somewhere that allows for freedom of expression and exploration without the constraints of either your home or work environment. In this post, we’re discussing the top 15 ways in which you can discover how to create long-lasting moments in this particular spot.
1. High-School Gym
One user shared, “My high-school gym was like a third place. I originally went there because I had nowhere to go for lunch and a break. Didn’t want to become a target for bullying by looking lonely. Made some friends in the gym and got pretty strong in the process. After school, I joined a gym, which was the opposite experience. There’s no sense of community. Awkwardness and silent judgment fill the air. It’s more like the atmosphere of waiting at a bus stop.”
Another user responded, “I don’t really know if the gym counts as a third place anymore. Everyone’s on their air pods and not wanting to bother others or talk.”
2. City-Organized Adult Sports
Community sports are a good option, if there’s a thriving community already in place in your area. Sure, it’ll take some work at first. It might take time for your fitness level to reach the average on the sports team or group you join, and it almost always takes a while to really hit it off with new friends. But once you’re invested, the payoff can be really worthwhile. Imagine if you could count on meeting friends at least once a week, maybe more, to have a good workout, good conversation, and maybe even hang out afterwards?
Another user shared, “Depends a bit on the size of town/city you live in. In my city, there’s a group of runners that do like a Saturday morning group/ open to anyone running. Everyone is pretty friendly. Folks gather and chat for 30 minutes before the run.
“We also have adult sports throughout the city, so stuff like softball, soccer, and basketball, where they’ll paste together a team from singles or place you on a team that’s one person short. I also once took a class at REI in bike maintenance and met a couple of nice folks. REI also organizes events that I think probably draw in folks looking for an interaction (day hikes, trail runs, kayak trips).”
3. Library
Admittedly, libraries are probably not top-of-mind for most of us. But all the same, libraries have a lot more classes than just toddler story time. There’s often classes for things like poetry, story-writing, computer programming, art, and more. And while your skill might eventually outgrow the free library class, you could come away with a new hobby and new friends!
One user shared, “Hit the library friend. There’s all sorts of programming, and it’s free!”
4. Something We Have to Create
One observation of third places is that sometimes, we just have to create them. But honestly, it could be anywhere. Maybe you like hiking at a local park, or there’s a quiet coffee shop near your home. Maybe you have the space to create a special nook in your home with a bookshelf and twinkle lights, or the ability to build a shed in the backyard you can develop into your own special space. Maybe it’s as simple as sitting in your car for half an hour after you get home and playing some quiet music while you read a book for a few minutes.
“I’m glad finally someone brought it up. It’s something we have to create, and it could be anywhere. I sometimes chill in my car with the radio playing softly. Normally I am alone, but once I had a friend join me, surprisingly they said it was enjoyable,” one commenter chimed in.
5. Bars
Once upon a time, a local bar or pub made for a great third space. In some places they still do, but you may need to do some hunting. Look for a coffee shop that’s open late and maybe serves wine and bear. Maybe there’s a small diner with options affordable enough that you can become a regular. Whatever it is, a bar, coffee shop or restaurant can make an excellent third space.
One user commented, “That’s what bars used to be for.”
Another Redditor replied, “Too expensive nowadays …”
6. Suburban Strip Malls
One online Redditor commented, “I’m 24, and I’m in the same boat. I live at home in the suburbs, so I typically go to suburban strip malls or the gym, but I also don’t have much to do otherwise (other than work and occasional chores).”
7. Paddleboard
“Do you have any state parks or trails nearby? Arboretum? Rock climbing gym? What about exploring an apparatus like the Lyra or silks? Jogging outdoors?
“Do you have any lakes nearby? Paddleboarding can be an excellent meditative core workout.”, one user suggested.
8. A Tree Fort
One Redditor posted, “Build a tree fort near your house.”
Honestly, tree houses would probably still appeal to a lot of us. But even if not, why not build one for your kids? They’d probably love it, and you can instill in them the ability to curate their own special area.
9. Meetup Dot Com
“meetup dot com … Search for your interests. Rock climbing, CrossFit, doggie playdates, adult sports leagues through the park district, fibre arts, ultimate, pottery, etc.,” one user suggested.
The OP replied, “I’ve tried that, but it always seems geared towards an older demographic.”
10. A Local Recreation Center
If everyone in gyms is getting to focused on getting through their own workout without talking to anyone, try a community center. They’re usually already full of people who are looking for friendships and teammates!
One Redditor posted, “Try your local recreation center. They have classes, sports event sign-ups, sometimes pools depending on area, other resources and group gatherings.”
11. Athletic Courts
One user said, “If you’re specifically looking for fitness and activity, I would check out nearby athletic courts or social media for exercise groups.”
12. Discord Servers
“It sounds like what you need to do is meet other people as opposed to finding a new space. Are there any local Discord servers for your area for young adults? I found this very helpful for meeting more people and keeping in touch,” one Redditor stated.
13. A Community Center
Another commenter asked, “Do you have a community center? Like a YMCA or a community fieldhouse? My local ones usually have adult sports/activities going on, like basketball training, judo, etc. You can also pay to go for the day and just do whatever you want, like at the fieldhouse, people are using the different fields for basketball, soccer, football, baseball, etc.”
14. Disc Golf Place
One Redditor posted, “Disc Golf! Easier than golf, cheaper than golf, more laid back than golf. If you enjoy IPAs, jam band music, weed and dogs, then that’s a bonus.”
Another user added, “Disk golf seems a pretty social outdoor activity. Adult league sports teams. Kickball, softball, things like that. You can get a part-time serving job, decent extra money and servers like to get together after work. Maybe a local game shop has picked up games for D&D or some other tabletop game. There are local meetup apps and groups on social media.”
15. A Dance Studio
“I take weekly classes at a dance studio with all the same students for a full school year. There’s a large adult dance class offered at this studio. Many other places might not have as many options, but it’s nice to get to know the same people over the course of several months,” commented one user.
