Why Your Checking Account Should Contain as Little Money as Possible

Oct. 4, 2023 – First published on Oct. 4, 2023
A bank account is an excellent place to keep your money so it’s organized and readily available when needed. Many people keep their cash in a checking account. But, while you want to stash enough money in your checking account to cover your bills and everyday expenses, you want to avoid keeping all of your cash there. I’ll explain why here, and suggest a better place to stash your extra savings.Don’t miss out on interestThe average checking account doesn’t accrue interest. That means you won’t get rewarded for keeping money in your bank account. Instead of keeping all your cash in your checking account, you should only keep enough to cover your monthly expenses. You may want to keep a bit more than just enough to cover your bills. That way, you’ll be covered if you have an unexpected charge or a more costly bill than anticipated. How much extra should you have? It depends. For some people, a couple hundred extra dollars may be ideal. But for others, it may be a good idea to include a few hundred or up to an extra $1,000 in their checking accounts for extra wiggle room. But don’t keep every last dollar you have in your checking account. If you do, you’ll miss out on interest. Instead, move your extra savings into a bank account that accrues interest. With an interest-earning bank account, you’ll get rewarded as your cash sits in the bank. You could earn money with a savings accountMany people keep extra cash in a savings account. Review the bank’s annual percentage yield (APY) when considering a new savings account. This rate is the amount of money or interest you’ll earn over a year. The higher the APY, the more money you can make. You can take advantage of an attractive interest rate by opening a high-yield savings account. At the time of writing, the bank accounts on our best high-yield savings accounts list offer APYs ranging from 4.30% to 5.26%. If you have a significant amount of extra cash and keep it in an account like this, you can earn money without doing extra work. $5,000 in savings accumulates this much interest To determine how much interest you can earn by moving your extra cash to a savings account, multiply your initial deposit by the APY your bank account offers. This will show you how much interest you can earn by keeping your money in the bank for a year. Let’s imagine you have $5,000 extra sitting in your checking account right now. If you instead move that money to a high-yield savings account with an APY of 5% and you keep it in the bank for an entire year (and your APY doesn’t change; note that banks can raise or lower APYs at any time), you’ll earn $250. That’s much better than making $0 by keeping your savings in a checking account that doesn’t accrue interest. Now you can see why it pays to avoid keeping all your money in a checking account. You can earn extra money from interest by keeping your spare cash in a savings account that offers interest. For additional tips like this, check out our free personal finance resources.
3 Reasons I Don’t Like Aldi as Much as I Used To
By: Maurie Backman |

Sept. 13, 2023 – First published on Sept. 13, 2023
At some point in 2022, I discovered Aldi and began shopping there weekly. I found that I was able to save money on my grocery bill by purchasing certain produce items there. And since I happen to have an Aldi adjacent to my local Costco, it wasn’t particularly out of my way.But over the past few months, I’ve become less enamored with Aldi. Here’s why.1. The selection is just too limitedAldi — at least near me — is a minimally stocked grocery store. The shelves aren’t loaded the way they are at my nearby ShopRite and Stop & Shop.To be fair, this was the case when I first started shopping there. But because there’s just not a lot of selection, I’m generally limited to only buying a few items when I pop into Aldi. Not so long ago, I was running into Aldi for some fruit, which I usually buy there, and I needed to grab shredded cheddar cheese. Normally, I get that at Costco, but I didn’t want to run next door to Costco and wait in a line for cheese alone. Unfortunately, though, Aldi didn’t have the cheese I needed, so I had to make an extra stop anyway.2. The inventory is too inconsistentNot only is there a limited selection of food items I can buy at Aldi, but sometimes, I can’t even find the five or six things I’m looking for. Aldi was once my go-to source for avocados, since it’s an expensive purchase and Aldi tends to sell them for less than Costco (at least in my area). But the last few times I stopped at Aldi, avocados weren’t in stock. And that’s happened to me with other things, too. Over the past several months, I’ve struggled to find everything from cucumbers to strawberries at Aldi as well.3. What the store saves me on groceries, I lose via lost working hoursShopping at Aldi still has the potential to save me a little money on groceries. At a time when supermarket prices are up 3.6% on an annual basis, that helps. The problem, however, is that even though Aldi is right near Costco in my neighborhood, thereby allowing me to combine those trips, it still takes time to visit an extra supermarket. I have to find parking, wait in a checkout line, and spend time searching the shelves. While it’s nice to save $2 here and $3 there, the reality is that a stop at Aldi might cost me 20 or more minutes of work — especially when I don’t manage to find the things I need. And losing out on that work time often means forgoing more than $2 or $3 of income. So from a time perspective, it’s just not worth it.Shopping at Aldi could make sense for a lot of people. If you’re someone with flexibility in your schedule and grocery list, and you’re not so picky about the brands you bring home, then it could pay to spend the time visiting Aldi, even if you don’t always manage to find all the things you need. But I’ve reached the point where shopping at Aldi makes less and less sense for me, so I’ll most likely stop going there unless it’s a one-off basis.
7 Little-Known Gift Cards You Should Always Buy at Costco
By: Steven Porrello |
Updated
Sept. 29, 2023 – First published on Sept. 29, 2023
Costco gift cards are one of the warehouse’s best deals. Costco often will add 10% to 30% of value when you buy its gift cards in a bundle. It would be one thing if the gift cards were for places you’d never shop, like Bed, Bath, and Beyond (R.I.P.). But Costco gift cards are surprisingly varied and include many restaurants and retailers you’re probably already spending money with.So if you, like me, pinch pennies for your finances, here are seven gift cards you should always buy at Costco.1. Jiffy LubeCostco will add 25% of value when you buy a set of two $50 Jiffy Lube eGift cards for $74.99. While Jiffy Lube doesn’t offer the cheapest oil change on the market (Walmart will likely take the gold for that), its technicians do go through rigorous training via the Jiffy Lube University to ensure no accidental damage is done to your vehicle. If quality trumps price for your vehicle, this deal will save you $25 off your next oil change (limit of five per membership).2. Alaska AirlinesPacific Northwesterners will appreciate this deal — Costco will give you a $500 eCertificate to Alaska Airlines for $449.99. That comes to 10% off your next Alaska Airlines flight (limit of four per membership).3. Southwest AirlinesIf that was the first time you’d heard of Alaska Airlines, here’s a gift card package with a more familiar airline: Southwest. Costco will add 10% of value when you buy $500 of Southwest Airlines gift cards for only $449.99.4. Cinemark TheatresIn a great deal for moviegoers, you can buy a $50 Cinemark Theatres eGift card for only $39.99 at Costco. That’s an extra 20% of value that you can use for movie tickets, food, drinks, or merchandise (limit of 10 per membership).5. Miller PaintPainting your house ain’t cheap. Interior paint jobs will cost about $2 to $6 per square foot, according to the home improvement site HomeAdvisor, while exterior paint jobs can cost about $1.50 to $4 per square foot. To ease those costs, Costco will sell you $100 of Miller Paint gift cards for $69.99 — a whopping 30% of extra value.6. SpafinderIf you thought the cost of painting your house was bad, imagine how your back will feel after hours of painting walls. To ease that pain, Costco has an irresistible gift card deal: two $50 eGift cards for $79.99 to be used at thousands of spas and salons across the country. You can also use them at participating yoga and fitness studios (limit of 10 per membership).7. Synergy RestaurantsOne of the more interesting gift card packages I’ve come across, this extremely lucrative deal — two $50 eGift cards for a sticker price of $69.99 — will help you foot the bill at hundreds of local restaurants in numerous cities across Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, and Texas. This is perhaps one of the best deals I’ve seen and can be perfect for locals in those states and travelers who are visiting them. Most members don’t realize how many gift cards Costco actually sells. In fact, these seven packages only scratch the surface. Next time you’re at your local Costco warehouse, be on the lookout for gift card packages, which are often found at the ends of aisles. You might find a deal you can’t get anywhere else.
5 Amazing Costco Buys for Less Than $10
Costco is a favorite among bargain hunters. But because it’s a place where you typically buy in bulk, it’s often not great when you only want to spend a few bucks. Believe it or not, though, there are some deals at Costco for $10 or less. Here are five amazing Costco finds that will set you back no more than $10.1. Rotisserie chickenNot surprisingly, the $4.99 rotisserie chicken tops this list. Costco debuted its famed bird for $4.99 way back in 1994. It briefly raised the price by $1 during the Great Recession in 2008, then knocked it back down to $4.99 one year later. Had Costco raised its prices to keep up with inflation since 1994, that chicken would cost $10.48 today.Costco’s rotisserie chicken will always be a fan favorite for those looking for an effortless dinner. Just be aware: Costco keeps the prices low because its rotisserie chicken is what’s called a loss leader. The warehouse giant is willing to lose money selling them because it knows it can get customers into stores, where they’ll probably buy more than just a chicken.2. Hot dog and soda comboCostco has raised the prices of many of its food court items in recent years, but the price of one perennial favorite shows no signs of budging: the hot dog and soda combo, which has cost $1.50 since it debuted in 1985. Adjusted for inflation, the hot dog and soda combo should cost $4.28. Last year, during a quarterly earnings call, Costco chief financial officer Richard Galanti said the warehouse giant could keep the $1.50 price point “forever.”3. Kirkland Signature Creamy Almond ButterYou can use almond butter as a salad dressing ingredient, slather it on toast, put it in baked goods, or just eat it straight from the jar. If you’re the type who likes to devour almond butter by the spoonful, you don’t want to pass up a 27-ounce jar of Kirkland Signature Creamy Almond Butter, available for just $7.99. That works out to less than $0.30 per ounce. By comparison, a 16-ounce jar of Trader Joe’s Creamy Almond Butter Salted costs $6.99.4. Olde Thompson Kosher Sea Salt, 5 lbsSea salt has plenty of uses that go beyond cooking. You can use it for cleaning, as an exfoliant for your skin, and sprinkle it around your garden to keep unwanted bugs away. For just $5.99, you can score a 5-pound jar of Olde Thompson Kosher Sea Salt and keep it handy for all your household and kitchen needs.5. Bisquick Pancake & Baking Mix, 96 OuncesBisquick is another one of those things that’s handy to keep in your pantry. You can use it to whip up a quick batch of pancakes or waffles for breakfast or keep it on hand for a variety of baked good recipes. A 96-ounce box of Bisquick is available at Costco for $8.89. It’s normally priced at $10.99, but there’s a $2.10 manufacturer’s discount that’s good through Oct. 8, 2023.What are the best deals at Costco?Since Costco tends to sell large quantities, you’ll typically find that a lot of the best deals cost well above $10. Regardless of the exact price, it usually makes sense to buy products at Costco that have a long shelf life. For example, even if you find great deals on fresh produce and milk, you probably don’t want to load up on these items unless you’re feeding a large crowd, as they’ll go bad quickly. Also, make sure you look beyond the grocery department for savings. For example, getting your prescriptions from Costco Pharmacy or using Costco to fill up your gas tank could also save you money. If you want to maximize the benefits of your membership, try shopping with a Visa credit card that offers rewards. (Costco only accepts Visa credit cards.) That way you can earn travel rewards or cash back when you load up on groceries and other necessities.
5 Ways to Turn $100 Into Passive Income
By: Chris Neiger |
Updated
Oct. 1, 2023 – First published on Oct. 1, 2023
Creating passive income is one of the best ways to build wealth and protect your personal finances from an emergency, like losing a job or having your salary cut. According to U.S. Census Bureau data, about 20% of Americans have some level of passive income, with the average amount earned from passive income being $4,200 annually.Passive income strategies aren’t get-rich-quick schemes, and many initially require a significant time investment. The good news is that many can be started with $100 or less. Here are a few inexpensive ways you can start generating passive income.1. Buy stocksSome people think that owning stocks is only for rich people. It’s not. In fact, 61% of Americans own stocks, according to Gallup. And while you won’t get rich investing $100, you do have the potential to easily make money. You can open an online brokerage account for free and typically buy stocks for either little or no fees these days. The hard part is figuring out what company you think will do well over the long term so that you get the largest return.Let’s look at one popular company that many people own stock in: Apple. Let’s say you invested $100 annually over the past 10 years to buy Apple’s stock and reinvested any dividends you received to buy more shares. Thanks to Apple’s phenomenal growth over the past decade, your stock would be worth $4,848 — a 385% return on your investment.Of course, picking stocks can be difficult. If you want to potentially earn passive income in the market without picking specific stocks, you may want to buy shares of an exchange-traded fund (ETF). These funds follow market indices and can be purchased for as little as $1, thanks to online platforms that allow you to purchase fractional shares.2. Rent out an extra roomThis one is super easy and might cost you $0 if you already have the extra space. The latest Census Bureau data shows that 27.6% of Americans live alone. This means that many Americans may have a spare room in their home that could be transformed into a passive income stream. While it’s not for everyone, renting out a room in your home could be one of the easiest ways to generate passive income because you’re already in the space — either renting or as a homeowner — so all you need to do is find a roommate and collect their rent payments. This could be a very lucrative way to boost your income, considering that rent prices have skyrocketed over the past few years.3. Rent out your carWith 13% of full-time Americans working from home right now and 28% on hybrid schedules, many cars are sitting unused throughout the work week. With some planning and effort, your vehicle could quickly begin generating income through car-sharing websites like Turo. You can list your vehicle on the site for free and pay Turo a fee when you’ve rented out the vehicle. Turo says the average annual income for one car on its site is $10,516. Of course, some work is required to keep the vehicle clean and coordinate pick-up and drop-off. Still, renting out your vehicle could be a low-cost way to earn semi-passive income.4. Create an online courseMany people have accumulated many skills through jobs and even hobbies. You likely know how to get certain things done that someone else would find very useful — and pay for. There are many online platforms — including Udemy, Skillshare, and Thinkific — where you can create your own professional course and then sell it to an established online audience. You’ll need to do a fair amount of work upfront creating your course — including planning the sessions, recording videos, and making other content — but once you have it up and running, you can earn passive income from your hard work. Some course-creating platforms charge a monthly fee, while others may take a percentage of each sale you make. But while this option isn’t free, it’s certainly inexpensive.5. Start a dropshipping businessThere are many different businesses that fall under the dropshipping category, including selling T-shirts online or print-on-demand content like notebooks and journals. The startup cost for dropshipping businesses is low because you don’t buy any inventory and don’t have to rent an office or retail space. Instead, you’ll spend money setting up a website and potentially selling ads to market your products. You can even become a seller on Amazon and sell products without investing in your own online shop. You’ll have to invest significant time on the front end to build your business. Still, once you’ve found a niche and have established the relevant products, dropshipping allows you to spend minimal time keeping up the business while still making online sales.Keep these things in mindWhile all of these ideas will cost you little money and have the potential to generate passive income, you’ll still need to invest time and mental energy in setting them up. For example, you may need to do a lot of research before setting up a dropshipping business or launching an online course.Like anything worthwhile, be patient and take small steps to get started. You likely won’t be an overnight success, but making any progress toward generating passive income will move you further toward your personal financial goals.
The Barnes & Noble credit card, issued by Barclays, can help you expand your reading library one purchase at a time. And since it’s a Mastercard, it can be used nearly anywhere, allowing you to earn rewards beyond the bookshelves of Barnes & Noble’s 600 or so locations.
Still, even the most devoted bookworms will probably find that rewards accumulate slowly. A general cash-back credit card can offer higher reward rates in more everyday spending categories, as well as greater rewards flexibility, since that cash back can be used toward anything.
Here’s what you need to know about the Barnes & Noble Mastercard.
1. There’s a modest sign-up offer
You’ll earn a $25 gift card to Barnes & Noble after the first purchase or balance transfer on the card. While it’s nice that there’s no minimum spending requirement to snag that bonus, it’s a pretty lean introductory offer. Typically, store credit cards offer a large percentage discount as an incentive when you sign up for a credit card, and some may even feature a separate welcome offer on top of that.
And general rewards credit cards can boast still-richer sign-up bonuses, valuable enough to offset the cost of several book series instead of just one book. Consider a card like the $0-annual-fee Wells Fargo Active Cash® Card, which features the following welcome bonus: Earn a $200 cash rewards bonus after spending $500 in purchases in the first 3 months. The card also earns 2% cash back on all purchases.
🤓Nerdy Tip
The Barnes & Noble credit card features an introductory balance transfer offer, and unlike most other credit cards, a balance transfer will trigger the card’s sign-up bonus. That’s rare indeed. But note that the card’s balance transfer fee is on the high side: $5 or 5% of the amount you’re transferring, whichever is greater. Other balance transfer credit cards may offer either a longer interest-free window or a lower balance transfer fee of 3% — or both.
2. Rewards come as either a rebate or points
Rewards are issued in varying forms with the Barnes & Noble credit card. As a cardholder, you’ll earn:
A 5% rebate on all purchases made at Barnes & Noble (in store and online), B. Dalton, Bookstop, Bookstar, Doubleday, Ink newsstand and Charlesbank stores.
2 points per $1 spent at restaurants (not including Barnes & Noble Cafe purchases).
1 point per $1 on all other purchases.
Points do not expire as long as the program continues and your account is in good standing. But if you don’t spend a lot of money at Barnes & Noble or on dining out, many other credit cards can generate rewards more quickly that can also be used to fund your book collection.
Look for a credit card that earns rewards in everyday categories where you spend most. The $0-annual-fee Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card, for instance, earns 3% back on dining, eligible streaming services, grocery stores and entertainment, as well as 1% back on all other purchases. (Unfortunately, for this card, books don’t count as entertainment.)
🤓Nerdy Tip
If you have a Prime membership with Amazon (which of course initially made its name as a bookseller), also consider the $0-annual-fee Prime Visa. It’s not as focused on the in-store book-buying experience, but it can offer 5% back on Amazon.com and Whole Foods Market; 5% back on Chase Travel purchases; 2% back at restaurants, gas stations, local transit and commuting (including rideshare); and 1% back on all other purchases. There’s also a sign-up offer: Get a $100 (or more) Amazon Gift Card instantly upon approval exclusively for Prime members.
3. Redemptions are automatic
Redemptions for the Barnes & Noble credit card are limited, but that’s not uncommon among store credit cards. What’s less common is how your rewards get applied, since there are two kinds: a rebate and points.
The 5% rebate simply arrives as an automatic statement credit. Meanwhile, the points you earn are also automatically redeemed, but only for Barnes & Noble gift cards, and based on a threshold that you preselect.
If you don’t update your preferences, redemptions for gift cards will default to a $25 Barnes & Noble gift card delivered by mail every time you accumulate 2,500 points. Gift cards by mail will be delivered to the billing address listed on the account within seven to 14 business days after the billing statement in which they’re earned. You can cut down the wait time by choosing email as your delivery method.
Log in to your account or call the number on the back of the card to make selections.
4. The interest rate can get expensive
Carrying a balance on the Barnes & Noble credit card can be painful. Depending on your creditworthiness, you could have an APR north of 30% (accurate as of October 2023). As of May 2023, the average APR for credit cards that are assessed interest was 22.16%, according to Federal Reserve data.
By paying your balance in full every month, you can avoid interest charges. But if you suspect you’ll need to carry a balance, you’ll save more money with a credit card that offers a low ongoing interest rate, even if it doesn’t earn rewards. With good credit scores of 690 or higher, it’s possible to find such cards at federal credit unions, which cap interest rates at 18%.
5. The complimentary BN Premium membership has a steep spending requirement
As a cardholder, you can earn a complimentary BN Premium membership for 12 months (an annual value of $39.99) — if you spend $7,500 annually on the card. Terms apply. A BN Premium membership offers additional perks: 10% off most items on BN.com and at Barnes & Noble stores and Paper Source stores; free shipping without a spending requirement; exclusive deals; early access to special editions and events; birthday offers and more.
Still, that’s a relatively steep spending requirement in exchange for a relatively low value. Plus, will you spend $7,500 at Barnes & Noble alone — the card’s most rewarding category — in one year?
You can get more value with other options. For instance, it’s possible to earn decent rewards on your online book-related purchases with a card like the $0-annual-fee Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express. It offers 3% cash back on U.S. online retail purchases (on up to $6,000 spent per year); 3% back at U.S. supermarkets (on up to $6,000 per year); 3% back at U.S. gas stations (on up to $6,000 spent per year); and 1% back on other purchases. Terms apply.
🤓Nerdy Tip
Regardless of which credit card you use, it’s possible to still get membership perks at Barnes & Noble upon signing up for the free rewards program. You’ll collect 1 stamp for every $10 spent on a purchase. By collecting 10 stamps, you can earn a $5 reward.

Some of these jobs may require a degree or training program, and while it can take a lot of work to find the job of your dreams, it’s worth going for it if it’s what you really want to do. Also, you will most likely need a resume and/or portfolio to get your foot through the door.
Current Rewards
Current is a free music app (unlike other streaming apps that make you pay a monthly or annual fee!) where you can listen to your music both online and offline, so you don’t even need Wi-Fi.
You can make up to $600 a year by playing your favorite music from over 100,000 radio stations.
The more music you listen to, the more points you will earn. The points you earn can then be redeemed for gift cards, electronics, and even charitable donations.
Current’s app can be downloaded on the App Store and on Google Play.
Hit Predictor
Hit Predictor is a website where you can rate new music before it’s released, and earn gift cards.
When you first sign up, you will be asked questions such as how much music do you listen to on a daily basis.
Once you are logged in, you will see where it says “Rate Music” and you can simply click that to get started.
Then, a song will play for you. Once it is over, you get to rate it and leave comments. For each song I reviewed, I was paid 3 points for answering. The points you earn can then be put towards raffles for Amazon gift cards.
I only had to listen to less than a minute of each song, as well as answer 2 short questions.
You can learn more about HitPredictor by clicking here.
InboxDollars
InboxDollars is a popular site that rewards you for taking online surveys, and occasionally they have music surveys available.
Surveys on InboxDollars pay around $0.50 to $5.00 per survey. These typically take around 3 minutes to 25 minutes to complete, with the shorter surveys typically paying less.
InboxDollars pays you with real cash, not just rewards points. You can also earn free Amazon gift cards, Starbucks gift cards, and more.
Sign up for InboxDollars and get a free $5 bonus here.
Earnably
Earnably is a website where you can earn free gift cards and PayPal cash for watching music videos and completing other tasks.
Earnably does not pay a lot though, and you may have to watch over an hour of music videos to earn $1. But, there are a lot of videos that you can watch.
You can learn more about Earnably by clicking here.
RadioEarn
RadioEarn is a website where you can listen to songs and make passive income by listening to internet radio stations.
It is free to sign up, and you earn points which can be redeemed for bank transfers, bitcoin, and free Amazon gift cards.
Now, you will not get rich off of this website, nor will it be a full-time income. You only earn a few points per hour of listening. But, if you just have the radio stations on in the background, it can be easy to earn points.
You can learn more about RadioEarn by clicking here.
Cash4Minutes
Cash4Minutes is a website that will pay you for listening to internet radio broadcasts from a mobile device.
This one is a little different, though, because you have to use your cell phone to call a number in order to listen to the radio broadcast.
You can learn more about Cash4Minutes by clicking here.
Build a music blog
If you have a passion for talking about music, then you may want to start a music blog. This may be a blog where you review music, write about musical instruments, talk about a specific artist, and more.
And, all you need is an internet connection, a laptop, and to start listening to music.
For example, by starting a music review blog, you can turn your love of music into reviews. You can share your thoughts and opinions on the music, new albums, and concerts.
With a blog, you could make money in a variety of ways, including placing affiliate links to the albums you’re listening to. You can use your blog to share your thoughts about music you’ve listened to and host online discussions on your website platform.
Another way to make affiliate income with a music review blog is to share links to related products. When music is released, there are usually a lot of different products that are for sale as well, such as clothing, books, posters, and more.
You could also promote a music streaming platform, a musical instrument, music equipment (such as guitars, drums, keyboards, and microphones), and more.
Another way to make money with a music review blog is through display ads and sponsorships. These are ads that are typically placed in your blog posts that a reader would see as they are reading your blog post. Display advertising is very easy to get started with, but you will need page views in order to see a good income from it.
You can learn how to start a music blog with my free How To Start a Blog Course. In this free email course, you will learn how to start a blog and make money from it. Over the course of seven days, you will learn how to decide what to blog about, how to create your music blog using WordPress, how to make money blogging, how to get page views, and more.
Also related to this – you could start a podcast or a YouTube channel on music as well.
Listen to music while you house sit or pet sit
If you want to earn money while you are listening to music, one way would be to find paid house sitting or pet sitting jobs.
House sitters are paid to take care of someone’s home while they are away. You may need to water plants, take mail in, do some light cleaning, take care of pets, and so on.
You have a lot of downtime as a house sitter, and you can spend that time listening to music. House sitters make anywhere from $25 to $50 per day.
Pet sitters make anywhere from $25 to over $100 per day. I have personally paid $100 per night for a pet sitter to watch our dogs in her home.
If you are looking for a platform to begin with, I recommend listing your pet sitting services on Rover.
Can you listen to Spotify and get paid?
Unfortunately for music fans, Spotify does not pay people to listen to music on their streaming platform. Nor do they pay you for your music playlists.
But, you can join platforms such as Playlist Push to get paid for the Spotify playlist that you have created.
Do music artists get paid on Spotify?
Artists do get paid on Spotify, though.
According to Billboard, in 2022, Spotify paid 57,000 music artists more than $10,000 in royalties each.
Of that number, 1,060 artists on Spotify earned more than $1,000,000 in royalties in 2022.

Music review websites are websites where you can find new music and share what you think about it.
You may be rating the songs that you listen to, whole albums, and the artists. You would be providing feedback, which the artists and music labels seek out so that they can reach a larger audience.
The music review websites I talked about above include Slice The Pie, Playlist Push, and Hit Predictor.
Can I earn money by listening to music?
Learning how to get paid to listen to music can be a fun and rewarding way to spend more time doing something that you love.
There are many websites that will reward music lovers with extra cash for doing things such as curating playlists and listening to online radio. Or, you could find a job in the music industry, such as at record labels or in music transcription.
You may be paid with cash straight to your PayPal account, gift cards such as iTunes, and unique rewards such as free electronics as prizes. Or, if it’s a full-time job, you could be paid with a full-time paycheck, of course.

Blogger
My favorite online typing job is to start your own blog.
I spend most of my working time typing, and I really enjoy it!
Blogging allows me to travel whenever I would like, work from home, have a flexible schedule, earn an income, and more.
I created Making Sense of Cents in 2011, and since then I have earned over $5,000,000 with my blog.
My blog was created on a random day as a way to track my own personal finance progress. And when I first started my own blog, I honestly didn’t even know that people could make money blogging or how to start a successful blog!
I did not create Making Sense of Cents to earn money from home, but after only six months, I began to make money.
Blogging is quite affordable to start too, and you really just need a computer and an internet connection. I spend most of my time typing new blog posts, talking to readers and companies through email, and more.

An example would be selling a book and you link to a specific book on your blog and try to get people to purchase the book through your affiliate link.

I interviewed an expert on the topic – Linda from Internet Scoping School. She has been scoping for over 35 years and has taught scoping online for around 20 years.
She has a free course that will introduce you to scoping so that you can decide if it’s one of the online business ideas you want to pursue. You can find the free course by clicking here.

How do I create a Cash App account for my child?
Teaching kids about money management is vital for their financial future.
One excellent way to do this effectively is by setting up a Cash App account for children, giving them practical experience in handling finances while under a parent’s supervision. Also, known as a sponsored account.
This guide will walk you through the process of creating a Cash App account for your child and highlight the numerous benefits it offers.
Step 1: Download Cash App
To download Cash App, click this Cash App link to make sure you are in the right spot. Both you and your teen will need to do this step.
It’s easily recognizable – look for the white dollar sign on a green background. Once you’ve found it, simply hit ‘Install’ and sit back while your phone does the work.
Remember, this green goodness is only accessible to users in the United States.
When learning which payment type is best when trying to stick to a budget, you will be pleasantly surprised at how well Cash App works.
Step 2: Create an Account
This is a simple process. Both the teen and the adult will need to do this step separately. If as the parent you don’t have a Cash App account, then you will need to do this step.
To create a Cash App account, follow these steps:
Once installed, open the application and follow the on-screen instructions to set up your account.
You will have to enter your phone number or email address.
For security certification, the Cash App will send you a secret code to verify you. Enter it.
Select a $cashtag, which is a unique username to send and receive money (similar to Venmo)
Step 3: Connect a Bank Account
For the parent account, you need to complete this step and the teen will need to wait.
Remember, in “My Cash” you’ll spot the “Add Money” option for funding.
Open Cash App; it’s the icon with a white dollar sign on a green background.
Tap the top-right profile icon.
Navigate to “My Cash” – it’s a tab on the home screen.
Click “Link a Bank,” nestled within the options.
Follow the prompts to add your bank account or debit card info.
Once your card is linked, you’re all set.
Learn where can I load my Cash App card.
Step 4: Authorization Request of a Family or Sponsor Account
Now, you must link the two accounts together. Cash App calls this a sponsored account. There are one of two ways to accomplish this.
Option #1 – Parents Initiate the Request
To invite someone 13-17, then open the app:
Tap the Profile Icon on your Cash App home screen
Select Family
Tap Invite a teen
Follow prompts to share links using text or email
Option #2 – By the Teen
On the Home Screen, tap the Cash App profile icon.
Proceed to Family Accounts and choose the option “I’m a Teen”.
Complete the Cash App for Kids application form with your details including your name and birthday.
Hit the Request Approval button.
Enter the name, email, phone number, or $CashTag of your parent/guardian.
Lastly, tap Send. This will send an authorization request to your parent or guardian’s Cash App account. They need to approve this request before you can start using the app.
Note: You can’t add funds, send payment, or request a Cash Card until this authorization is approved.
Step 5: Have Your Child Design and Order a Free Cash Card
Now, the fun part! Ordering your own Cash App Card.
Designing and ordering your Cash Card is packed with creativity and ease.
Customize your card to represent your unique personality, with choices ranging from the material, font size, and base design, to text lines.
You can seek inspiration from an array of cool Cash App Card design ideas. Notably, the glow-in-the-dark cards are quite popular among minors.
The whole process is about making your debit card unmistakably yours.
Step 6: Limitations on Certain Features
Certain financial apps cater to teens by setting limits on transactions.
For example, a teen on Cash App can send and receive up to $1,000 every 30 days. This safeguard is designed to prevent overspending and encourage smart budgeting practices.
Furthermore, parents and guardians have the option to impose their own customized spending limits through the app according to their teen’s financial maturity. However, it’s essential to keep in mind, that these apps are not recommended to be used by teens just like regular accounts due to the risks of misspending and overspending.
Be aware that certain transactions are blocked, including bars, dating services, and rental car services
Encourage your kids to use robust, unique passwords and activate features like PIN lock and facial ID to enhance security.
You can ensure safety by setting a PIN, turning on notifications, and limiting money requests to ‘contacts only’.

Safety Measures for Using Cash App for Kids
Educating children about safety measures while using cash apps and debit cards is crucial in today’s digital age.
With increased online scams, it’s important that kids understand the equivalence of digital cash to real money and how to protect their accounts.
This brief overview will highlight key practices to ensure your child’s safety when handling digital transactions.
1. Know the App’s Safety Features
Knowing the app’s safety features is crucial for maintaining security while using cash apps.
These features can include password protection, two-step verification, and biometric scans such as fingerprint or facial ID. Many apps also offer robust encryption to secure data and transactions.
Keeping abreast of the app’s safety protocols not only helps safeguard against potential scams but also instills a better understanding of digital literacy. Understanding these safety measures and functionalities can greatly lessen the likelihood of falling victim to fraudulent activities.
Make sure they don’t learn how to unlock borrow on CashApp!
2. Talk to Your Kids About Money
It is essential to talk to your children about financial literacy from an early age especially if your parents never spoke about money.
Start by making them aware of the concept of saving by using tools like a piggy bank and elucidate the value of delayed gratification.
As they mature, introduce them to the functionalities of debit cards and apps like Cash App that provide hands-on experience in managing finances. Teach them about budgeting, saving, and investing in an age-appropriate manner.
Above all, impart the message that money doesn’t just grow on trees and that every purchase needs to be evaluated against future needs and plans.
3. Use Account Alerts to Stay Up to Date
Account alerts on Cash App are not only handy but critical to your kid’s financial safety. Setting them up is a breeze.
Firstly, head to the “Notification” tab in your app settings.
Thereafter, opt for “Account alerts” and switch it on. This will ensure you’re notified of all transactions.
For an added layer of security, enable “Suspicious activity” alerts; this helps to flag any odd movements swiftly.
4. Set Up a Strong Account Passwords
It is crucial to ensure that your online accounts are secured with robust and unique passwords.
Complex passwords that incorporate a mix of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters can provide a strong line of defense against unauthorized access. Also, you should look at changing these passwords regularly, which further enhances security.
Using a password manager, either online or paper-based, can assist in maintaining and keeping track of different account credentials, maximizing security while minimizing the risk of forgetting passwords.
However, if opting for a paper-based version, it is crucial to store it in a secure and confidential location to prevent unauthorized access.
5. Have a Conversation About Scams and Fraud
The proliferation of digital transactions and cash transfer apps has given rise to numerous scams, making it critical for users to look out for fraud.
Online scams can result in financial loss, with cash apps often not assisting in the recovery of misdirected funds due to errors or fraudulent activities.
Additionally, cybercriminals use these scams to steal personal data, leading to issues like identity theft and fraudulent transactions. Furthermore, the anonymity of digital platforms enables scammers to disappear without a trace after executing a scam, sometimes befriending and exploiting minors.
Therefore, everyone must stay vigilant about potential scams to protect their money, personal information, and overall digital safety.
Key Tips to Watch for:
Discuss current scams happening. Use reliable resources to educate them about how fraud works and precautions to take.
Teach them to *slow down* during transactions to avoid sending money to the wrong contacts.
Advise against sending money to strangers to avoid being scammed.
6. Check Bank Accounts for Any Unauthorized Payments
As a parent, it is essential to regularly check your teen’s checking accounts linked to their mobile wallet for unauthorized payments.
By staying vigilant, you can detect suspicious activity early and prevent possible instances of fraud.
Tracking their spending patterns also helps you understand if they are managing their digital money wisely or if there are sudden changes in their spending habits.
Remember, it is better to be proactive in monitoring these accounts, as most money transfer app funds are not FDIC insured, making the recovery of accidental transfers or payments a challenging task.
7. Ability to Give Your Kids an Allowance
If you choose to do so, giving your kids an allowance on Cash App is a safe and effective way to teach them about responsible money management. It provides hands-on experience while putting the power of monitoring in your hands.
To set this up, simply create an account for your minor and periodically send money to it as an allowance. They can spend or save it, while you observe their spending habits.
This is a simple way for kids and teens to start managing a small amount of money.
Cash App – Do More with Your Money
Cash App is a user-friendly financial services platform that allows users to instantly send, receive, and invest money.
Simple way to save on everyday spending and back the way you want.
Which cash app will you choose for your kids
To sum it up, equipping your kids with financial responsibility via Cash App or Greenlight is an intelligent move.
These apps provide a platform for learning about savings, investments, and the value of money.
Although risk exists its potential scams, with proper guidance, your teen can safely navigate this. The added perks of trading, direct cash exchanges, and options like BusyKid and Bankaroo can further enrich their financial literacy journey.
So, which digital wallet will you pick for your kid’s first leap into financial independence?

Business owners, marketing professionals, nonprofit organizations, educators, event planners, restaurants, and more buy templates all the time.
Canva templates come with blank spaces where buyers can add their own words or pictures, adjust colors and fonts, and more. As a teacher, you might be looking for ways to make some extra money during breaks or weekends. One option to consider is house sitting, and this is when you watch someone’s home (such as watering their plants and collecting mail) and sometimes take care of pets while their owners are away. People also hire house sitters so that their homes aren’t sitting empty because a visible presence can deter potential thefts.

31. Mystery shop
I was a secret shopper in the past, and there were often mystery shops that gave me $100 to put toward a free dinner. I always looked forward to these, as I was living paycheck to paycheck, and I used these restaurant mystery shops to reward myself every now and then.
There were other mystery shops that paid me actual money, and some paid me in free items, such as makeup, movie theater tickets, and car oil changes.
Companies hire mystery shoppers to get an understanding of their customer’s experience. Companies want to know a real product opinion, how the customer felt they were treated at their business, how phone calls were handled, and more.
Basically, mystery shopping is a way to anonymously test the entire shopping experience.
You can learn more at How To Become A Mystery Shopper.

35. Real estate agent
Some teachers are real estate agents on the side of their full-time job as a teacher. This is because you can list and sell homes on your weekends, during breaks, at night, and over the summer.
Selling homes can be more difficult, though, as your clients may want your full attention during the day occasionally and you would be busy teaching, so this is something to think about.
36. Driver’s ed teacher
A common side hustle for teachers is teaching driving lessons to teenagers and adults. As a teacher, you may be able to check if the high school near you is in need of a teacher for this subject. Or, you can reach out to a local driving school to see if they are hiring.

That huge acceptance footprint should make it even easier to maximize your rewards this holiday season. Just be sure to set your Chase Freedom Flex℠ as the preferred payment card in your PayPal app so you don’t miss out on that bonus cash back.
🤓Nerdy Tip
Rewards won’t “stack” if you make one transaction across multiple bonus categories. For example, if you make a qualifying charitable contribution through PayPal, you’ll only be eligible to earn up to 5% cash back on that transaction.
Buy in bulk at wholesale clubs
From cleaning supplies to bulk food items and beyond, wholesale clubs like Sam’s Club and BJ’s offer a great way to stock up on supplies you’ll use well after the holiday season. With some thoughtful spending, you can lock in that bonus cash back for items you won’t use until 2024. Just be aware of exclusions: You won’t earn bonus cash back on gas or other in-club services like cell phone plans, insurance or travel packages.
Another major caveat: Costco stores don’t accept Mastercard, meaning you can’t use the Chase Freedom Flex℠ (which runs on the Mastercard payment network) for in-club purchases. However, you can still earn bonus cash back by using your card through the Costco website. This works even for purchases you make online but pick up at your local store.
Make a charitable donation
The holidays are a perfect time to give back. If your personal budget allows for charitable giving, you can earn bonus cash back for using your Chase Freedom Flex℠ to make a donation to select charities (see below for a complete list). Be sure to account for any transaction fees you may incur for using a card before making the donation. If the fee is greater than the rewards you’ll earn, you’d be better off writing a check. Depending on your tax situation, donations to a qualifying charity may be tax-deductible, leading to additional savings.

Optimizing the Discover it® Cash Back
Earn cash back from your couch
In today’s busy world, Amazon has become synonymous with convenience. From electronics to pet food, you can shop from your couch for almost anything at the world’s largest retailer. And through the last quarter of 2023, paying with an eligible Discover card can earn you bonus cash back.
Qualifying purchases include those made on Amazon.com and through the Amazon app, including digital downloads, Amazon Fresh orders, Amazon Local Deals, Amazon Prime subscriptions and items sold through third-party merchants.
If you don’t need to make an immediate purchase, reload your Amazon gift card balance and grab that bonus cash back for a future purchase. Amazon also sells a selection of third-party gift cards. If you’re making a purchase at another retailer, first see whether Amazon sells a gift card to that retailer. You could earn bonus cash back on the gift card purchase, then use the gift card with the other merchant.
Target bonus cash back
Jeans? Groceries? A new flat-screen TV? Whatever you’re looking for, there’s a good chance Target sells it. And for the fourth quarter of 2023, purchases made in Target stores, at Target.com and on the Target app all qualify for bonus cash back with your eligible Discover card. If you’re shopping online or in the app, be sure to make your eligible Discover card the default payment method.
Gift cards make for a perfect stocking stuffer, and Target stores carry an extensive selection of third-party gift cards. Just head to the gift card rack and get rewarded for rewarding your friends, loved ones or colleagues.

Updates to the Marriott Bonvoy Bevy™ American Express® Card welcome offer
The $250-annual-fee Marriott Bonvoy Bevy™ American Express® Card’s latest welcome offer is sure to excite Bonvoy enthusiasts with a big jump in value for the same spending requirement.
Here’s how the two offers compare:
New offer: Earn 125,000 Marriott Bonvoy bonus points after you use your new Card to make $5,000 in purchases within the first 6 months of Card Membership. Terms Apply.
Previous offer: Earn 85,000 Marriott Bonvoy bonus points after you use your new Card to make $5,000 in purchases within the first 6 months of Card Membership. Terms Apply.
Ongoing rewards: The Marriott Bonvoy Bevy™ American Express® Card will continue to offer its ongoing rewards rate of 6 points per dollar spent on participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels; 4 points per dollar spent at restaurants worldwide and at U.S. supermarkets (up to $15,000 in combined purchases per year); and 2 points per dollar spent on all other eligible purchases. Terms apply.
Updates to the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card welcome offer
The latest offer on the $650-annual-fee Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card offers the potential for significantly more value with the same spending requirement. But since the offer comes in the form of free night certificates rather than points, you’ll sacrifice flexibility when you redeem.
Here’s what’s changing and what’s staying the same:
New offer: Earn two 85K Free Night Awards after you spend $6,000 in purchases on the Card in your first 6 months. Each award can be used for one night (redemption level at or under 85,000 Marriott Bonvoy points) at hotels participating in Marriott Bonvoy. Card Members could enjoy a value of up to $1,200 when redeeming each reward. Certain hotels have resort fees. Offer ends 11/1/2023. Terms Apply.
Previous offer: Earn 95,000 Marriott Bonvoy bonus points after you use your new Card to make $6,000 in purchases within the first 6 months of Card Membership. Terms Apply.
Ongoing rewards: The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Cardwill continue to offer its ongoing rewards rate of 6 points per dollar spent at participating Marriott Bonvoy hotels; 3 points per dollar spent at U.S. restaurants; 3 points per dollar spent on flights booked directly with airlines; and 2 points per dollar spent on all other eligible purchases. Terms apply.
Are the new offers better?
Although they’re not the best offerings, the latest welcome offers on AmEx’s Marriott Bonvoy cards are quite a boost in value. For the Bevy card, you’ll earn nearly 50% more points than the previous offer. And if you’re able to use the free night certificates for full value for the Brilliant card, the new offer represents a 78% boost.
But while the latest Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card offer carries significantly higher value, it comes with far less flexibility. The two Free Night Awards are worth up to 85,000 points per night, but they expire one year from when they’re issued.
Plus, it may be difficult to redeem them for full value. If you redeem the 85,000-point certificate at a hotel that’s charging 60,000 points for the night you want to stay, you won’t get the difference back in points. On the other hand, an 85,000-point certificate may not cover a luxury St. Regis or Ritz Carlton hotel stay, which could cost 100,00 points or more per night. (Marriott does allow you to apply certificates toward a higher-priced room and cover the difference with up to 15,000 points.)
Marriott Bonvoy points can be redeemed at more than 8,600 hotels worldwide. Bonvoy points can also be transferred to certain airline partners, or redeemed for car rentals, gift cards, and other options. The value of points may vary depending on how you redeem them.
How the cards compare
When comparing these new welcome offers, there are a few more factors about the two cards worth keeping in mind, most notably the difference in annual fees. The Marriott Bonvoy Bevy™ American Express® Card, which comes with complimentary Gold status, carries an annual fee of $250. Notably, it does not come with an automatic free annual stay. The Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card comes with automatic Platinum status and a higher (though less flexible) welcome offer. But with an annual fee of $650, those extra perks come at a steep cost.
Here’s a breakdown of how the two cards compare:

With most of the year under our belt, the holiday season is just around the corner. No matter what you celebrate, this season is full of food, celebrating and spending time with loved ones.
While you’re hard at work prepping for the holiday season, scammers are too. A survey conducted by Experian found that a full 1 in 4. Americans have been a victim of identity theft or fraud in the holiday season. If you’re worried about scammers this year, don’t worry—we’ve got tips on how to look for holiday shopping scams this season.
When the pandemic hit in early 2020, COVID-19 scams became a popular method for criminals to get access to your information and steal your identity. However, the holidays are when these scammers go into overdrive, meaning it’s important to be extra cautious as you do your online shopping and holiday giving. Here are some of the most common holiday shopping scams to be aware of.
Illegitimate Charities
Many people use the holidays as a reason to be a bit more generous, but be careful before you make that donation. Many scammers create fake charities in an attempt to get you to donate. They get your money—and possibly access to your identity info—and no good ever comes from that generosity.
Check for social media presence, news stories, financial records and proof that any charity you’re considering donating to actually exists and has a good reputation.
I just watched a documentary on the dark web, and I will never feel safe using my credit card again!
Luckily I don’t have to worry about that. I have ExtraCredit, so I get $1,000,000 ID protection and dark web scans.
I need that peace of mind in my life. What else do you get with ExtraCredit?
It’s basically everything my credit needs. I get 28 FICO® scores, rent and utility reporting, cash rewards and even a discount to one of the leaders in credit repair.
It’s settled; I’m getting ExtraCredit tonight. Totally unrelated, but any suggestions for my new fear of sharks? I watched that documentary too.
…we live in Oklahoma.
Fake Online Stores
Online shopping is a convenient way to check off all the items on your list without having to actually brave the holiday crowds. However, it’s important to ensure that the sites you’re shopping from are actually legitimate. Scammers create fake online storefronts—sometimes even mimicking well-known retailers—and you don’t know it’s fake until the merchandise never comes or you start seeing evidence of identity fraud.
Empty Gift Cards
Gift cards are the perfect choice if you’re not sure what someone on your gift-giving list wants or if they like to pick out items themselves. But selling gift cards that have a $0 balance or have already expired is a common and remarkably easy scam. This happens most often on local sales sites, such as Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace.
Email Scams
Have you ever gotten an email about something you bought online—but you never actually purchased anything from that retailer? Maybe the email said you needed to reset your password or gave you a link to track your package. These are phishing email scams designed to get you to enter your personal info so scammers can use it for identity theft.
Shipping Problems
One of the biggest worries that comes with online shopping—especially with the supply chain issues that have come as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic—is whether the gifts will arrive on time. Criminals capitalize on this fear by sending out emails, texts and other communications letting you know there’s been an issue with your package. You’re asked to provide personal information such as your address, credit card info and birth date to confirm your order, but all you’re really doing is giving scammers the information they need to steal your identity.
While the holidays are a common time for shopping scams, it doesn’t mean there’s nothing you can do about it. Learn what to look for and how to protect yourself from identity theft with these tips.
1. Pay Attention to Website URLs
Online searches can lead you to scammer-run websites that unleash computer malware or collect credit card numbers for identity theft. Carefully read website domain names. Watch for unfamiliar vendors or missing letters, misspellings or other tweaks to the name of a legitimate company. Pay special attention to the last letters. For example, tiffanyco.mn indicates a Mongolia-based website, not the legitimate website for Tiffany & Co., tiffany.com.
2. Make Sure the Site Is Legitimate
Before ordering, check the “Contact Us” page for a phone number and physical address and the “Terms and Conditions” link detailing return policies and such. Unlike legitimate vendors, bogus websites are less likely to post these—or they’ll provide them in a suspicious manner, such as via a faxed request only.
How do you know if a holiday website is legit? Check the Better Business Bureau as well as Facebook and Google reviews before you buy from a new place. If the business doesn’t have any social media or online presence other than the website, that’s a red flag.
3. Only Buy Gift Cards From Retailers
Buy gift cards directly from the retailer and avoid shopping for discount gift cards through local swap sites. You may also want to buy gift cards online or from the checkout instead of the display racks, which are less secure. Fraudsters can peel off stickers to glean gift card codes, replace them in envelopes and wait for an unsuspecting shopper to buy them. Once purchased and activated, they enter stolen codes at the retailer’s website to make online purchases—leaving the intended recipient with a useless card.
4. Look for HTTPS Sites
When buying online, check the URL to see whether the website starts with “http://” or “https://.” The “S” is for “secure” and is your best bet for safe shopping. Some legitimate retailers may use http sites, but your information is much more vulnerable to attack in this case because it’s easier for hackers to get to it. Even with a secure page, avoid using public Wi-Fi hotspots for online shopping or other financial transactions.
5. Use Prepaid Gift Cards for Online Shopping
Consider buying prepaid cards for online shopping instead of using your actual debit or credit card. These cards are often reloadable for ease of use, and if your information does happen to be stolen, hackers will only have access to the amount on the card and not your entire bank account.
6. Take Care on Craigslist
On Craigslist or when answering local classified ads, deal only with sellers who provide a phone number you can verify. Don’t rely solely on email correspondence. Assume any request for wire-transfer payment is a scam, and be suspicious of prepaid debit card transactions. Using PayPal or a credit card is your safest bets.
7. Avoid Deals That Seem Too Good to Be True
Stay clear of prices from private sellers that seem too good to be true or are tied to hard-luck stories, such as a need to sell quickly because of divorce or military deployment. No one is selling the latest gaming console for only $50, no matter how hard up they are. These are common scams to get advance payment—and you’ll likely get no merchandise.
8. Don’t Open Holiday E-Cards From People You Don’t Know
Delete E-Cards or general holiday emails if you don’t know the sender. These mass-sent greetings likely contain malware. Legitimate card notifications should include a confirmation code to safely open the card at the issuing website.
9. Beware of Undeliverable Package Emails
Avoid emails claiming that FedEx, UPS, DHL or the U.S. Postal Service has an undeliverable package with links for details. The links will install malware that can log keystrokes to steal computer files and passwords. Unless you previously provided an email address, courier services won’t contact you this way. This scam baits you to call for details—at which point you’ll be tricked into making an expensive overseas call or revealing your personal and financial information. Look up the callback number yourself if you’re curious.
Gearing up for the holidays? Go ahead and enjoy your holiday shopping this year. Just be a little careful—keep an eye out for anything suspicious and make sure that any website you buy from is legitimate.
If you’re worried that you might already be a victim of identity theft or just want to keep a closer eye on your credit, ExtraCredit can help you know what’s going on with your credit report and spot identity theft as soon as it happens.
