Six of the highest-selling prescription medications in the United States will be “off-patent” before the end of 2012. The costs associated with those currently pricey meds will drop faster than the Dow on a bad day.
Here’s one example: The generic form of Lipitor might cost as little as $10 per month, compared to the $150 it can cost now. Yowza!
It’s a very big deal even if you have health insurance. The average co-pay for a generic formula in the U.S. is $6, as opposed to $24 for non-generics with “preferred status” and $35 for non-preferred brand. That doesn’t help much if you use a medication not afforded rock-star status by your insurer — or, worse, if you can’t afford insurance.
As welcome as these new generic formulas will be, you needn’t wait around for prices to tumble. There’s more than one way to cut the cost of medications.
Start With the Cheap Stuff
Plenty of generics already exist. Doctors sometimes prescribe the designer drugs out of habit, but maybe 10 days’ worth of penicillin would vanquish that upper-respiratory infection just as well as a pricier antibiotic. Speak up, already: Explain that you’re on a tight budget and in the market for a just-as-good-but-cheaper formula.
Taking maintenance meds? You can pay as little as $4 for a month’s worth of pills at places like Target, Wal-Mart and Safeway. Visit store websites to find which drugs are available, then ask your doctor which ones will work for what ails you.
Note that while generics generally perform as well as the pricier pills, a few of them might not. If your doctor is adamant about your staying with the name-brand stuff, there might be a good reason. Of course, it wouldn’t hurt to seek a second opinion.
Walgreens has a “Prescription Savings Club” whose $35 annual fee gets you and your immediate family discounts on more than 8,000 different meds. Of those, more than 400 generics are available for $12 for a 90-day supply.
Once you’ve gotten a prescription established, either by bringing it in or having your doctor phone/fax it in, you can refill over the phone or online. The store might even offer free shipping. Ask.
And speaking of the Internet: Sites like Drugstore.com sell prescription medications, as do online pharmacies such as Caremark and Medco Health Solutions Inc.
Caution: The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy recently issued a public health alert about fake online pharmacies, noting that 96% did not comply with U.S. pharmacy laws. The organization recommends buying only from verified internet pharmacy practice sites.
Drugs that Are Free
You might not have to pay for meds at all. Once that strep throat is diagnosed, ask if the doc has any drug samples. Pharmaceutical reps drop off boxes of free meds along with those fabulous calendars, pens and tote bags. Your doctor might reserve these drugs for desperately broke patients — but maybe that’s you. It can’t hurt to ask.
Tip: Some drugs, such as prenatal vitamins and certain antibiotics, are free at Top Foods, Meijer and Publix supermarkets.
If you’re living on a very low income, you might qualify for free medications through patient assistance programs offered by most pharmaceutical companies. Groups such as NeedyMeds, the Partnership for Prescription Assistance, the Chronic Disease Fund and HealthFinder.gov can tell you more.
Several drug companies also joined forces to create the Together Rx Access Program, designed for people under the age of 65 who have no prescription drug coverage. This free, income-based program makes it possible to save 25% to 40% on more than 300 medicines and medical products, and is accepted in most major pharmacies in the United States and Puerto Rico.
Using Less, Buying Big
If the subject is painkillers, you might not need the 20-count dose on the prescription. Ask if you can fill only a few tablets’ worth at a time. Use good judgment on this one, obviously, but I’ve filled pain prescriptions in the past and used only one or two tabs. Infuriating.
You can cut the price of certain meds in half quite literally, by splitting the pills. For example, if you have a 10-mg drug prescription request a 20-mg tablet (the cost is often about the same) and then use a pill splitter to halve the dose. The gadget can be had for as little as $3 on Amazon.com, which means it’ll probably pay for itself the first time you use it.
Caution: Do not cut pills with a paring knife. The dose has to be exact, not almost half. Spring for the pill-splitter now or for an ambulance co-pay later. Your choice.
Again, splitting works only on certain medications.
Or what about bulk discounts? No, you won’t be asking for 50 pounds of Percodan — you’ll be using the power of group buying by getting your meds at Costco or Sam’s Club. You don’t need to be a member to use the pharmacies in those warehouse clubs.
Make ’em Beg
Pharmacies now bid for your business the way travel agencies and insurance companies do. In his new book, Living Large in Lean Times: 250+ Ways to Buy Smarter, Spend Smarter and Save Money, frugal dude Clark Howard suggests a service called BidRx.com. You register and post the drug you need, and independent pharmacies will instantly throw bids at you.
The site is free but you need a referral code to register. The author has his own code, clark, but stresses that he receives zero compensation. BidRx simply set it up after Howard’s mention of the site caused a leap in business.
Brick-and-mortar pharmacies often lure us with gift cards cards for new or transferred prescriptions. Any time you see such offers, clip them out and put them in your wallet. When your spouse gets bronchitis or your daughter breaks her arm during hockey practice, head for the pharmacy with the best signing bonus.
Obviously it’s important to tell the new place about any other meds being taken. One would hope the pharmacist would ask, but maybe s/he won’t. I’ve dropped off ‘scripts and been asked only if I were allergic to any medications, not whether I was on another pill that would clash with the new meds. That’s why some people don’t think it’s safe to hop from pharmacy to pharmacy.
If this makes you uncomfortable, then don’t do it. But back when my health insurance didn’t include discounted drugs, I filled and transferred prescriptions whenever I could get a gift card. It was a nice budget-booster, whether I used the cards for groceries or gewgaws.
Here’s my favorite example. Before a minor health procedure I needed to get two tablets of a tranquilizer (pre-surgery) and an antibiotic (post-procedure). Both were generic and therefore super-cheap, and they earned me a $10 from Target and a $20 gift card from Walgreens. I used part of the Walgreens card for a special offer: Buy four 12-packs of Diet Pepsi for $10 and then get a $10 rebate.
At that time I happened to have coupons for two free 12-packs, which I’d received after calling Pepsi to complain about the tabs snapping off some cans of soda. Thus I wound up paying just $5 for the soft drinks but still getting the $10 rebate.
And in fact, I didn’t even pay the $5. I had the gift card, remember?
Please refer to me by my Latin name, illegitimus frugalis. And yes, I know that diet soda isn’t good for me. But I didn’t care — I was on Valium!

What is Branded Surveys?
Branded Surveys is one of the most popular online survey platforms and they were started in 2012.

Why does Branded Surveys pay you?
Branded Surveys and other market research companies pay you to answer online surveys because they are collecting research.
Companies hire market research businesses to learn what real customers, like you and me, actually think of their products and business. They can use the survey data that is collected to improve their product and business, or even create a whole new product that better suits the needs of their customers.
What kind of questions are asked in surveys?
Are you wondering what kind of questions you might be asked when you answer paid online survey sites?
Well, the type of questions that you receive can vary depending on the survey, but generally, they ask for your opinions on products or services, your preferences on certain topics, and sometimes even personal information such as do you have a dog or children.
For example, here are some survey questions that you may see:
How often do you go to a restaurant in a month?
How important is the price when considering a particular product or service?
What features do you look for when purchasing a _____?
How often do you use a ______?
What is your annual income?
How do you usually spend your spare time?
Have you recently purchased any new electronics or appliances? If so, what did you buy and why?
Do you usually research a particular product before buying?
How often do you shop for groceries each month?
How many hours per week do you spend watching TV shows or movies?
As you can see, they are easy. It is not rocket science!
These are just a few examples of the kind of questions that you may see when you answer a survey. Some surveys may be more focused on a specific product, whereas others may want to learn more about you.
Many times they simply want to just learn more about you, because this can help them figure out why you need a certain product or service.
How does Branded Surveys work?
The sign-up process is easy for Branded Surveys. Here are the steps:
Sign up for Branded Surveys here and receive a free 100 point sign up bonus. You can create a log in or log in with just your Facebook account.

Once you match with a survey, you will receive an invite from Branded Surveys that you can take. You will receive survey notifications in your email inbox or by logging into Branded Surveys and looking at your dashboard to see what surveys are available.
Complete the survey and earn points
After you have enough points, you can redeem your points for payout options such as cash or gift cards.
And that is all!
It is easy.
How to earn points on Branded Surveys
You can earn survey points in four main ways on Branded Surveys. The ways include:
By taking surveys. When you first create your account, you will earn points by simply building your profile. After that, you will earn points by answering real surveys.
Inviting friends can earn you 50 points once your referrals earn a silver badge. You will receive a referral link to share.
Answering the daily poll will earn you 5 points. These polls take less than a minute to answer and are asking you a very easy question.
Branded Surveys also has a leaderboard for whoever gets the most points on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. For daily leaderboard winners, you get 50 bonus points. For weekly leaderboard winners, you receive 200 points. For monthly leaderboard winners, you get 300 points.
Unlike other survey platforms, Branded Surveys sole focus is just surveys. They’ll even give you bonuses for answering the most surveys!

Each point on Branded Surveys is worth $0.01.
1,000 points are equal to $10.
500 Branded Surveys points are equal to $5.
Once you have earned a minimum of 500 points, you can redeem your points for rewards. Or, you can save your points and get a bigger reward.
How fast can you make money on Branded Surveys? How much money can you make using Branded Surveys?
On Branded Surveys, you can make around $0.50 to $5 for each survey you take.
Each survey on Branded Surveys typically takes around 5 to 20 minutes to complete. Before you start a survey, Branded Surveys will tell you the estimated amount of time – so you can see before you begin if you think it is worthwhile. Remember, this is just an estimate and sometimes you may spend more time or less time answering a survey.
How many surveys can you do a day on Branded Surveys?
If you are invited to a survey and start it before it becomes full, then you can do as many surveys as you want on Branded Surveys.
The main Branded Surveys problems are that you may not qualify for a ton of surveys, or you may be disqualified from taking a survey. This can be annoying to some people (this is typically the most common area for Branded Surveys complaints), but survey companies do this for a reason. Survey companies often send shorter surveys to see if you will qualify for a full survey. This is to ensure that you are a good fit for the survey.

No!
If you are looking for a paid survey site to pay you $1,000 a week, you will not find that because it does not exist.
Legit survey sites do not make you any promises to make you rich. They exist to give you some spare spending money in a flexible way, and that is all.
You will most likely earn around $10 or less to answer surveys in your spare time.
How much can you realistically make with surveys?
You will most likely earn less than $100 a month by taking surveys. They don’t take up a lot of your time, and they are not a scam.
If a paid survey site says you can make $1,000 a week, I would be extremely cautious because I have not heard of this yet.
To make the most money by taking online surveys, you will want to sign up for as many survey sites as you can.

Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card overview
The Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card is the middle of the pack for Southwest personal credit cards. While airline credit cards generally don’t have too many perks, the absence of foreign transaction fees and 6,000-anniversary bonus points should help offset this card’s reasonable $99 annual fee. Card rating*: ⭐⭐⭐½
*Card Rating is based on the opinion of TPG’s editors and is not influenced by the card issuer.
Savvy TPG readers know we generally don’t recommend building your points strategy around a single cobranded airline credit card, as these tend to offer fewer perks and less flexibility than a comparably-priced transferable points card.
When it comes to the Southwest Rapid Rewards card portfolio, you’ll generally find better earning rates and more flexible redemption options with cards that earn Chase Ultimate Rewards points — such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card — which you can then transfer to Southwest Rapid Rewards at a 1:1 rate.
That said, Southwest credit cards are very popular among Southwest fans. The mid-tier version of the three personal Southwest cards — the Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card — has a good balance of perks and an annual fee that could make it worthy of a spot in your card collection.
Here’s everything you need to know about the Southwest Premier Card to help you decide if it should earn a spot in your wallet.
Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card welcome offer
New applicants for the Southwest Premier card can earn 60,000 bonus points plus a 30% off promo code after spending $3,000 on purchases in the first three months from account opening.
TPG values Southwest Rapid Rewards points at 1.5 cents apiece, making the 60,000 points alone worth $900. While you can redeem points in several ways, the best value will come from using them for flights.
This is also the first time Southwest has offered a promo code as part of a sign-up bonus on a credit card. The code will appear directly in your Southwest.com account within eight weeks of meeting the spending requirement. It can be used — only once — on a single one-way or round-trip Wanna Get Away, Wanna Get Away Plus, Anytime and Business Select fare, and is available for use until October 31, 2024.

Given it is a single-use promo code, it would be best to save this for a more expensive ticket. You’ll get the biggest savings when using the code for round-trip travel and/or during peak travel periods like the summer or the holidays.
Keep in mind that you can’t earn a sign-up bonus on the Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card if you currently have any personal Southwest card, nor are you eligible if you earned a sign-up bonus on a personal Southwest card in the past 24 months.
Also, all of Southwest’s cobranded cards are subject to Chase’s 5/24 rule. If you’ve opened five or more new accounts over the past 24 months (across all issuers, not just Chase), you’re likely to be denied for this card.

Earning points on the Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card
Most airline credit cards award bonus points or miles for purchases directly with the carrier, and that’s certainly true here: You’ll earn 3 points per dollar spent with Southwest on the Premier Card.
However, it also has some other enticing bonus categories: You’ll earn 2 points per dollar spent on local transit and commuting purchases, internet, cable and phone services and with select streaming providers. You’ll earn 1 point per dollar on all other eligible purchases.
This amounts to a 4.5% return on spending with Southwest and a 1.5% return on everyday spending, according to our valuations.
Redeeming points on the Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card
When it’s time to use your rewards, one of the best things about redeeming Southwest Rapid Rewards points is the simplicity of the process. Whether you select the cheapest Wanna Get Away fares or the most expensive Business Select tickets, the cost of your award ticket is tied to the cash price of the flight.
This means you don’t have to worry about getting the highest possible cent-per-point redemption value. If you have Rapid Rewards points, you can redeem them for gift cards or merchandise, but the best value comes from using your points for Southwest flights — including options to Hawaii and international destinations.
Remember that Southwest’s policy of no change or cancellation fees means you can reprice your award ticket if the price drops. This offers valuable flexibility to get the best possible redemption.

Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card benefits
While you don’t expect an airline credit card with a $99 annual fee to come loaded with perks, there are quite a few benefits on the Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card.
You’ll receive 6,000 bonus points on each account anniversary, which TPG values at $90 — meaning that the anniversary bonus nearly offsets the card’s $99 annual fee.
Also, you’ll enjoy additional benefits like two EarlyBird check-ins per year with the Southwest Premier Card — helping you get on the plane early to snag a better seat — and 25% back on inflight purchases.
You may also be interested in earning Southwest A-List elite status to further enhance your travels with the carrier. Doing so requires completing 25 qualifying flights or earning 35,000 tier-qualifying points (TQPs) in a calendar year. You can earn bonus TQPs by spending on the Premier card: 1,500 TQPs for every $10,000 spent per calendar year.

Which cards compete with the Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card?
The Southwest Premier card has two obvious competitors: the other Southwest credit cards from Chase. However, it’s worth also considering a general travel credit card with a similar annual fee to see whether this is better for your wallet. Let’s see how they stack up:

Is the Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card worth it?
The Southwest Premier card with a $99 annual fee is mostly offset by the 6,000 anniversary bonus points, which have a value of $90, according to TPG’s valuations. If you value its other perks at more than $9, that covers the annual fee. However, most Southwest loyalists should apply for the Priority card instead, as it has more benefits.
Bottom line
The Southwest Rapid Rewards Premier Credit Card can be a good option for frequent Southwest flyers. If you fly with Southwest occasionally, this card’s price point and perks could make it a good fit for your wallet without the higher price tag on other travel credit cards.

Save more, spend smarter, and make your money go further
Pretty much everyone upped their spending on take-out food in 2020 – and for good reason. With restaurants closed for indoor dining and grocery stores experiencing unpredictable staffing and inventory issues, many consumers chose to order out for the majority of their meals.
Now that things are returning to normal, you may be wondering how to adjust your budget accordingly. We’ll walk you through how to determine the right amount to budget for take-out and dining, and give you some strategies to save money when ordering from your favorite restaurants.
How Much Should You Spend on Dining and Take-Out?
It’s hard to give an exact prescription for how much you should spend on take-out because it largely depends on the specifics of your budget and financial situation. In general, your food budget, including groceries and eating out, should make up between 10 and 15% of your income. Families with multiple children may spend more than that, so don’t worry if your percentage exceeds the recommendation.
If you’re not sure how much you spend on food, go through your transactions for the past few months and calculate the percentage.
John Bovard, CFP of Incline Wealth Advisors said consumers who have no credit card debt and invest 20% or more of their income in a retirement account can spend 10% of their post-tax income on take-out.
Ways to Save on Takeout
Want to keep your takeout tradition but still feel like you’re spending too much? Here are some tips to save money when ordering out from your favorite restaurants:
Pick up in person
Everyone knows that delivery fees add a huge surcharge to your total bill, but you might not realize how big the difference actually is. A New York Times article found that the same sandwich at Subway costs between 25% and 91% more when delivered, depending on the specific delivery app.
A $20 order could cost between $5 and $18.20 more if you get it delivered. The cost is generally higher during weekends and holidays.
Look for specials
Plan your take-out around restaurant specials. Follow restaurants on social media to see when they’re running discounts, like half-price oysters on Sundays or happy hour specials. When you’re picking up the food, ask someone behind the counter when the best deals are.
Restaurants often print coupon codes or discounts on their receipts, so don’t forget to check there.
Use discounted gift cards
Many restaurants and fast food places sell gift cards and often run special sales, like selling a $50 gift card for $45. This is especially popular during the holiday season.
Wholesale clubs like Costco and Sam’s Club regularly sell discounted gift cards to popular chains. For example, you can buy $100 worth of gift cards to California Pizza Kitchen for only $80 at Costco, or $75 worth of Domino’s gift cards for only $65.
You can also buy restaurant gift cards online through GiftCardGranny or CardCash, which sell gift cards for up to 10% off.
Skip dinner
Dinner is the most expensive meal of the day, so opt for breakfast or lunch if you’re eating out. If you get take-out a couple times a week, use one for dinner and the other for brunch or lunch.
Cash in rewards
Some restaurants have loyalty programs you can join with an email address or phone number, while others have an old-fashioned punch card system. Keep track of these rewards so you cash them out before they expire.
Order catering
If you’re eating with a group of people, see if the restaurant offers catering, which may be less expensive than ordering individual entrees. Everyone will have to eat the same thing, but it’s a great way to save money.
Sign up for restaurant emails
Both local and national restaurants often have email newsletters you can join to get extra discounts. For example, my favorite Mexican restaurant is constantly sending me emails for 10 or 15% off take-out.
Create a separate label for these emails so you can sort through them before ordering take-out. You can also add reminders on your phone to use the discounts before they expire.
Use a rewards credit card
Many credit cards offer points or cashback when you dine out, and some let you cash in points for restaurant gift cards. Look up the rewards policies for your current credit cards to see which one you should use for restaurants.
Consider opening a new card if you don’t have a dining rewards card. The Chase Sapphire Preferred offers 2% cashback for dining and also comes with a year of DashPass, the DoorDash subscription service with $0 delivery fees.
Chase Sapphire Reserve cardholders earn 3% cashback on dining, get a free year’s worth of DashPass and also have $60 of DoorDash credit for the first year.
Most dining rewards cards have an annual fee, usually around $95, so don’t open one unless the cashback rewards will exceed the fee. Some card companies will waive the fee for the first year, allowing you to see if you’ll earn enough rewards to offset the fee. Some rewards credit cards also let you cash in points for restaurant gift cards.
Buy a food delivery subscription
If you don’t have easy access to transportation, then ordering delivery may be your best option. In this case, consider signing up for a food delivery membership. DoorDash, Grubhub, Postmates, and Uber Eats all offer a monthly subscription for around $10. Each subscription comes with free delivery and other specials.
Before you sign up, calculate how often you order out and see if a monthly membership makes sense. If you have a neighbor or roommate, consider splitting a subscription with them to save even more money.
Many of these services have a free trial period, allowing you to gauge how much you’ll actually use them. Choose the app with the largest number of restaurants you like.
Use a browser extension
Browser extensions like Rakuten provide cashback when you order from delivery sites like Grubhub and Seamless. Just click on the Rakuten button on the top right of your browser when you visit either of those sites. You’ll earn up to 11% cashback with eligible orders.

Save more, spend smarter, and make your money go further
Does it pay to be Internet savvy? Yes. In more ways than many people imagine. Sure, the Internet is a great way to research just about anything you could ever want to know about; and it’s an outstanding communication, marketing, and entertainment tool. But the Internet can also save you money. And we’re not just talking 10 cents off here and there. We’re talking free (and nearly free) stuff.
Want proof? Below, we’re diving into some of the best places you can find free or heavily discounted items. Keep reading for a comprehensive explanation or use the navigation links below to learn more about a specific tip.
Use Online Community Marketplaces
Looking for a computer desk? How about a sofa, kids’ toys, electronics, office supplies, landscaping materials, or lumber? These are just a few of the hundreds of items listed in a single day in almost any city’s Craigslist free section. People are generally honest about the condition of the stuff they’re listing, and many have pictures, so you can see for yourself.
If you’re a “Mr./Ms. Fix-It” type, you’ll be in heaven. But even if you aren’t, you’ll be surprised at the kinds of things people are giving away. Look for the FREE listings under the “For Sale” section of your local Craigslist board.
Much like Craigslist, Freecycle is another site powered by the people and rooted in a belief that it is better to give items a second life, rather than filling up landfills and creating more stuff. Folks can list anything they have to give away, and others can browse the goods to find what they want. And, like Craigslist, you’ll find a ton of great free stuff through Freecycle.
Unlike Craigslist, Freecycle is run through local networks. This makes it a little more of a process to find and list items, but the advantage of this process is that it’s moderated, and people can communicate with the community at large. This reduces the likelihood of people listing garbage and describing it as treasure.
Besides those two websites, you can also look at Facebook neighborhood groups, Facebook marketplace, OfferUp, and other apps or websites where people are looking to offload whatever has accumulated in their garage.
Get Free Samples
Companies want you to take samples so that you’ll be incentivized to buy the full-sized product at a later point. Department stores and wholesale clubs offer samples in person. But if you can’t find samples, you can simply request samples from companies online.
Amazon Prime members can even buy sample boxes and get reimbursed with Amazon credit.
Costco and Sam’s Club are, of course, famous for their samples. And Trader Joe’s often opens some of its products for sampling purposes as well.
Use Coupons
Coupons are a great way to not only get free stuff but also to get serious deals. They might be “old-fashioned” but you may be surprised by the savings with coupons. Besides coupons from stores or brands, there are also online databases like RetailMeNot, Honey, and Coupons.com. RetailMeNot and Honey even have helpful Chrome extensions that automatically scans potential discount codes when you’re on the checkout page for an online store. In turn, you get the peace of mind that you’re getting the best discount possible.
Try Using Your Library Card
Books are already a wonderful free perk that libraries provide, assuming that you don’t rack up fees from forgetting to turn in your books on time. However, with a valid library card, you can also get access to different entertainment and education options as well. You might be able to see movies, rent games, check out audiobooks, attend community classes, receive free or discounted museum passes, and more. Visit your local library to see what free library services it offers.
Pay Attention to Discounts
If you fall into a certain category like student, healthcare provider, teacher, first responder, senior, military, or senior, there’s a good chance that you’ll get a discount at certain establishments. It never hurts to ask! In addition, it’s also a good idea to ask about any coupons that are available at retail stores. In many cases, retail workers will scan a coupon for you on your behalf — so make sure you’re nice!
Enroll in Loyalty Programs and Newsletters
It’s a lot less expensive for companies to retain old customers than it is to get a new one. For that reason, companies often invite you to join loyalty programs. These programs often give you special perks. For example, many stores will give you a birthday gift that might be a special discount, merchandise, gift cards, or free food.
The same idea can be applied to newsletters. You’ll often get a nice discount when you sign up for a company’s newsletter. And remember, you can always unsubscribe if your inbox is getting too full.
Takeaways: Getting Free Stuff
Does it pay to be a bit of a geek and figure out how to get free stuff? You bet it does. So, get your geek on, and fire up the laptop and get some freebies. And don’t forget, it never hurts to ask if you can get a discount if you’re at a store. The worst that can happen is they say, “No.”
If you have other examples of sites you use to get free or nearly free stuff, we’d love for you to share them in the comments section. Want to make the most of your money? Check out our article on how to become a better saver.

The Optimal Solution Payment Type Solution
The most efficient payment type is something that is instantaneous and there are no fees associated with the transaction.
Cash is the most efficient payment type: Cash payments are usually the most efficient and convenient way to pay for goods or services.
Credit cards can be a less favorable option: Credit cards tend to have high-interest rates and can lead to financial disaster if used irresponsibly.
Debit cards are a great way to keep your spending within your budget: Debit cards should be considered a top priority for budgeting because they keep you within your spending limits.
Developing a budget will help you avoid financial disaster: A budget helps you stay organized and make informed decisions about which payment method works best for you.
Today, there are so many options on which payment type to use in today’s online world.
1. Cash
Cash is a payment type that can be used to reduce debt spending. It is versatile and can be used for a variety of expenses, such as groceries, medical bills, and gym memberships.
Cash is an excellent choice for people just starting to budget and save.
It is more restrained than credit or debit cards. The envelope method of cash budgeting can be used to train your brain to reduce spending. Cash is the most traditional payment method and has the fewest drawbacks. However, you need a safe place to store your cash, and some stores may not accept it.
Benefits of Cash:
Cash is an excellent payment type when your financial goals are to reduce debt spending.
Cash is a finite payment method that prevents you from overspending.
You have a set amount of money to spend each month, so there’s no chance of overspending.
Easy to track with the envelope method: Utilizing the envelope method ensures that you are tracking your spending (i.e groceries, gas, medical bills) and making sure that you aren’t overspending.
Cash is a quick and easy way to pay for goods and services.
No Fees. No maintenance fees or interest rates as credit cards. Cash is just plain cash – printed paper of currency.
You can avoid high fees associated with card transactions: There are no associated fees when paying with cash, making it the cheapest option overall.
Cash discounts may be available. Since you are paying with cash many small businesses offer a cash discount of 2-5%.
You can use cash at any store: No need to carry around extra cards or checks.
It’s easy to get cash: You can easily get cash and make extra cash.
There’s no need for bank account details: No need for bank account details means you’re free from identity theft risks and other inconveniences that come with having a bank account.
Cash allows you to skirt some financial regulations: Because cash payments don’t fall under the purview of many financial regulations, businesses can take advantage of loopholes in the law that allow them to charge higher interest rates on loans or engage in shady business practices. (highly recommended to stay above book)
Cons of Cash:
Possibility of losing or stolen cash: Keep your cash in a safe place!
You need a safe place to store your money: Another disadvantage of using cash is that you may need a safe place in which to keep it – some stores don’t accept it as a payment method.
Why Choose Cash?
Total control over your money, so there’s little chance of unexpectedly running out of funds.
Cash is a great way to stay on budget, as you can easily track your spending and see where you need to cut back.
Unpleasant to spend money with cash, which can help train your brain to reduce spending.
Cash is a quick and easy way to pay: Using cash eliminates the need for banks, credit cards, or other forms of payment.
Verdict: Paying with cash is the best method for budgeting and saving.
Overall, cash is a great payment type when it comes to budgeting. You can immediately see how much money you’ve spent and what needs to be cut back.
You can’t make impulsive buying decisions with debit cards or credit cards.
With a finite amount you can spend, cash is an excellent choice to prevent overspending. According to research, paying with cash can feel unpleasant, which can train your brain to reduce spending as much as possible.
2. Credit cards
Credit cards offer a number of benefits, including convenience, cash back, and the ability to make large purchases or pay bills in case of emergency. However, credit cards also come with credit card debt and can lead to overspending and financial problems if not used carefully.
For many, credit cards are the easiest way to blow your budget because you don’t have control over how much money you spend.
It is possible to overspend with credit cards if you are not mindful of what you charge.
On the flip side, this is a preferred method as many credit cards also offer rewards programs that give you cash back or points for purchases. If you make the conscious decision to use credit cards, you must make payments on time to avoid penalties.
Benefits of Credit Cards
Credit cards are convenient: Convenient to use and don’t have to worry about losing cash.
Use a credit card if you are disciplined and have strict spending habits: If you are disciplined and have strict spending habits, then using a credit card can work well for budgeting purposes.
Flexibility on larger purchases: Some benefits that come with having a credit card include more cash flow as well as being able to make larger purchases.
Credit cards provide support in times of crisis: Many credit cards offer extended services that can help like 24-hour fraud protection, lost wallet services, traveler’s insurance, and many other benefits – check each issuer for details.
$0 Liability on Unauthorized charges: Your credit card company will not be held responsible for any charges that were not authorized by you. This means that if you did not authorize a charge in person, online, or otherwise, you will not be responsible for it.
Fraud protection: Check your credit card issuer, but many offer fraud protection.
New card introductory APR is helpful to pay down debt: The introductory APR for the new card may not last long.
Payments on balance transfer should be manageable: Make sure that the payments on your balance transfer are manageable.
Points: You can accrue points along with your spending which can be a great perk.
Credit card interest rates are significantly lower than payday loans: Interest rates on credit cards are usually much lower than payday loans.
Due Date is After your statement closes. Since your bill cycle is at least another 21 days between the closing date for your statement and the due date, it gives you flexibility. Personally, I still account for the credit card bill in the same month that it was accrued.
Cons of Credit Cards
Potential for credit card debt: When using a credit card, be aware of your credit limit and the interest rate that you will have to pay on your debt. Also one of the categories of debt.
Credit limit often leads people to spend money: The credit limit often leads people to spend money by giving them a false sense of security, when they should stick to a budget and pay attention to their credit card statement and the billing cycle.
Credit card overspending can lead to debt: Consider the purchase if it is essential or delay it if possible.
Ability to easily purchase something you cannot afford. Buying something that you don’t have the money saved up for will cost you interest fees associated and maybe even with a credit card balance transfer.
There are a number of fees associated with a balance transfer: Transfer fee, interest on new purchases charged to the card.
Your introductory APR may not be valid if you make too many payments late: If you fall more than 60 days behind on payments your introductory APR might be canceled and you may face higher interest rates.
Credit score can suffer from debt: When you carry a credit card balance or don’t pay your monthly bills on time, you will lower your credit score.
Avoid carrying a balance: Pay your statement in full each month to avoid paying interest and maximize your grace period.
Key Takeaways on Credit Cards
Make sure to pay attention to the dates: Don’t spend more than you can afford, and make sure you’re making your minimum monthly payments on time so that your debt doesn’t increase over time.
A credit card can be used for budgeting only if you’re very disciplined: If you know that overspending is NOT an issue and you pay the credit card’s monthly balance in full, then using a credit card is fine.
Credit card transactions usually take several days to register in the feedback system: Something to look out for!
You can step back into debit cards or cash if needed: If credit cards are not for you, there are other options available such as debit cards or cash
3. Debit cards
Debit cards are a good option if you want to stick to a budget because the predetermined amount of funds can help you stay within your means. Additionally, debit cards are more convenient than cash and just as accepted as credit cards in most places.
A debit card works more similarly to cash than to credit cards.
They provide an easier way to track your spending and avoid having to carry a lot of cash.
Pros of Debit Cards:
No Need to Carry Cash: A debit card is better than cash because you don’t have to carry a lot of paper money and change around, and they’re also safer.
Debit cards are faster and easier to use: Debit cards work just like credit cards – withdrawing cash, making purchases, and paying bills – but they are linked directly to your bank account, so there is no need to carry around a separate cash envelope wallet or purse for them.
A debit card is a good option if you want to stick to a budget: Debit cards come with a predetermined amount of funds that you can spend from your bank account just like cash.
Tracking payments is easy with debit cards: Your debit payments will appear on your issuer’s dashboard, which you can monitor anytime from any location.
Convenience: Debit cards are more convenient to use and faster than needing to write a check or carry around cash. Plus they don’t add to your debt.
Shopping online is easy. You can use your debit card to make online purchases with your bank account, and digital banking tools make tracking your spending easy.
Points: Some debit cardholders can earn points for spending on their cards, which can be redeemable for rewards such as cash back or gift cards. This is new to compete with credit cards.
Fraud protection is typically offered for free with most debit cards—meaning if your card is stolen or used without your permission, you can get your money back.
No impact on your credit report. When you use a debit card, the funds are actually withdrawn from checking or savings accounts so there is no credit reporting occurring.
Cons of Debit Cards:
An overdraft on a debit card can happen when a purchase exceeds the amount of money in the checking account, leading to overdraft fees.
Funds on hold with fraudulent charges. If your account gets hacked, your losses will be limited since most banks protect their users against fraudulent charges and online purchases with their accounts. However, those funds will be held while they investigate and you may be liable for $50.
No chance to improve your credit score. Since you are not borrowing money, you are unable to improve your credit score.
Debit cards are a great way to keep your spending within your budget and avoid overspending which can lead to many detrimental issues.
Regardless of the overdraft fee, debit cards are still better than cash because they’re safer and easier to carry around.
4. Checks
Checks… do people still write checks? Why yes they do!
Checks offer a few benefits as a payment method, even though they are slowly being replaced by more modern options.
This can help you keep track of your spending and make sure you do not overspend. Additionally, if you ever need to dispute a charge, having a check can be helpful in proving what you paid for.
What is a check?
A check is a written, dated, and signed instrument that directs a bank to pay a specific sum of money to the bearer from the check writer’s account. The date is usually written in month/day/year format. The signature of the check writer is usually on the line below “Pay to the order of.”
There are three main types of checks:
A cashier’s check is a check guaranteed by a bank, drawn on the bank’s own funds, and signed by a cashier.
A certified check is a personal check for which the bank has verified that there are sufficient funds to cover the payment.
A personal check is one that you write yourself and that is not guaranteed by the bank.
Pros of Checks
Checks are still a payment option: Checks are one of the traditional payment methods, but it is slowly dying out because of modernization.
Physical written record. It can be helpful to have physical copies of checks in addition to digital records through the bank.
You need to make both digital and physical copies of the check: Save check stubs but also transfer the information to a budgeting system.
Cons of Checks
Saving check stubs is helpful, but you still need to transfer the information to a budgeting system: Useful for tracking spending, but you’ll likely want more detailed records than just check stubs.
Not as convenient as credit or debit cards.
5. Apple Pay or Apple Cash
Apple Pay is easy to use and convenient since you only need to connect your smartphone to your cards and bank accounts via the app.
It is easy to use since you just hold your phone up to the reader and wait for the payment screen to appear.
You can even get cash back with apple pay.
Pros of Apple Pay:
Apple Pay is easy to use and convenient: You only need to connect your iPhone to your cards and bank accounts via the app.
You don’t need to carry any extra cards or cash: No need for additional cards or cash when you’re out and about
You can use Apple Pay on different devices: You can use Apple Pay on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
Transactions are secure: Your transactions are secured with Touch ID or a passcode.
Set up Spending Limits for each user. This way you can make sure you (or others with authorized access) are not spending more than you intended. Learn how.
Protection of Data during transactions. Your actual credit card number is changed to a different digital number, which allows limits your card number’s exposure.
Cons of Apple Pay:
Not widely accepted (yet). This method of payment is 100 percent guaranteed. While many stores offer apple pay, not all do quite yet.
The same rules apply if you load apple pay with a debit or credit card drawbacks include late fees, interest rates, and overspending: Keep that in mind when choosing Apple Pay as your payment method.
6. Mobile wallets like Google Pay, Samsung Pay, Venmo, or Zelle
Mobile wallets are digital payment systems that allow you to pay for items with your smartphone. Many people find mobile wallets are very convenient and becoming a traditional method of payment (such as credit cards).
With mobile wallets, you are making digital payments without having to carry around cash or cards using just your smartphone.

With a quality earning rate and discounts on gas, the BPme Rewards Visa Credit Card can help you save on your road trips this summer (and beyond.)
The card has valuable earnings rates and perks. And right now through August 1, new cardholders can earn 50 cents off per gallon on every gallon at BP and Amoco during the first 60 days of cardmembership.
To decide whether it merits a place in your wallet, let’s look at this card’s features and the value you can get from the current sign-up bonus.
The information for the BPme Visa card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.
BPme Rewards welcome offer
Rather than a stash of points or a one-time cash-back bonus, the BPme Visa card has an introductory offer of 50 cents off per gallon on every gallon at bp and Amoco during the first 60 days. New cardholders must apply by August 1 to be eligible.
Of course, the exact value of this sign-up bonus will depend on how much gas you purchase during those 60 days. Purchasing 100 gallons of fuel during the introductory period would make your welcome bonus worth $50. It’d be worth $500 if you purchased 1,000 gallons of gas in those 60 days.
After the introductory period, the standard discount will apply; cardholders earn 15 cents off per gallon at BP and Amoco gas stations in the U.S. You can find locations here.
BPme Rewards Visa Credit Card benefits and perks
The BPme Visa card is issued by First National Bank of Omaha and can be issued as a Platinum Edition Visa Card or a Visa Signature Card, depending on your creditworthiness and credit limit you are given upon account approval.
Cardmembers can enjoy benefits like free access to their FICO credit score, zero liability for fraud on the account, roadside dispatch through Visa and multiple ways in which to redeem rewards. Options include cash back, statement credits, gift cards from major retailers and travel experiences.

There are no limits to rewards-earning, and the card has no annual fee. However, there is a 3% foreign transaction fee — so this won’t be your best bet for purchases outside the country.
The cardmember perk you may be most interested in is the automatic discount of 15 cents per gallon on all BP and Amoco fuel purchases made in the U.S. using your card. This is a built-in perk of holding the card, and it’s automatically applied to the price at the pump.

BPme Rewards earning structure
Beyond the automatic discounts on gas purchases at BP and Amoco stations, BPme Visa cardholders can earn cash back across several other merchants:
5% cash back on non-fuel purchases at BP and Amoco stores (including convenience store and carwash purchases).
3% cash back on grocery purchases.
3% cash back on dining purchases (including restaurants, takeout and food delivery services).
1% cash back on all other qualifying purchases.
For those interested in cash-back rewards, these earning rates on groceries and dining are quite solid.
However, it’s important to note that you do not earn rewards on fuel purchases at BP and Amoco, since you already receive a discount (detailed above). You also won’t receive the fuel discount if you pay with a mobile wallet, as these purchases will be treated as “all other purchases” and earn 1% back.
You can read the full terms of the card and its rewards program here.
Bottom line
Earning 3% back on groceries and dining purchases is competitive but likely won’t be the best credit card for these bonus categories. However, the fuel discount is the most attractive feature of the BPme Rewards Visa Credit Card.
Saving cents on the gallon can really add up if you buy a lot of gas. And if you act fast, you can get that healthy welcome offer of 50 cents off per gallon in your first 60 days — this offer ends August 1, though, so jump on it soon.
