Though the Halepuna Waikiki by Halekulani hotel sits in the heart of tourist-packed Waikiki on the island of Oahu, it’s quiet and relaxed. The 284-room boutique hotel offers a refreshing alternative to the sprawling resorts that dominate the area.

But the real standout about this boutique oasis? No resort fees.

I visited Halepuna Waikiki for two nights, as part of a longer trip to Oahu. The resort initially caught my attention for its lack of resort fees. I grew even more interested when I learned about how much it included. Notably, it offered complimentary access to multiple museums that I had long been yearning to visit given my family’s Hawaiian heritage.

Though nightly rates typically run over $300 a night (slightly higher than Oahu’s average nightly hotel room rate of $272, based on May 2024 data from the Hawai‘i Tourism Authority), the free museum access alone went a long way in justifying it. Without that complimentary access, my travel companion and I otherwise would have spent more than $150 combined on museum tickets.

That made the decision easy — and it didn’t hurt that the hotel was quite fancy, too.

About the Halepuna Waikiki

Halepuna Waikiki by Halekulani is the sister property of Halekulani, On the Beach at Waikiki —one of the oldest (and most famous) Waikiki beach hotels. As for the Halepuna Waikiki, this property is relatively new. It opened in October 2019, but closed for more than a year during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The hotel reopened in April 2021 with several awards and titles to its name. That includes a AAA Four Diamond Award, which is a prestigious award recognizing hotels for their upscale style, amenities and service.

Features include a rooftop infinity pool with ocean views, plus a sleek lobby designed with custom light fixtures, vaulted ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows that offer up a light and airy aesthetic.

The Halepuna Waikiki offers the best of both worlds in that it has ocean views without sitting directly on the beach. That means you can still get a great view without the exorbitant beachfront price tag.

The hotel sits just one block from the beach on one side, and one block from Kalakaua Avenue — Honolulu’s main shopping street — on the other side. Since the hotel sits tucked away on a side street, it tends to be a little quieter than most other Waikiki hotels, and it usually won’t have as many non-hotel guests wandering through the lobby.

Halepuna parking is available, but it’s not cheap. Whether you opt for valet or self-parking, you’ll pay $50 per day. Given the hefty parking fee coupled with the hotel’s prime, walkable location, you might not actually want a rental car in Honolulu anyway.

To get there from the airport, it’s usually best to take a taxi or rideshare. Ubers generally cost about $30 to $40 between Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport and the hotel.

Halepuna Waikiki rooms

Halepuna Waikiki by Halekulani has 284 guest rooms and four suites. The best views are from the oceanview rooms on higher floors (floors 19 through 23), as they’re not obstructed by the buildings in front.

These Deluxe Ocean View rooms tend to cost about 15% more than the Ocean View rooms with obstructed views and about 30% more than the standard Waikiki view rooms.

The rooms have modern amenities, like a bedside and dress charging station with ports for USB and HDMI, plus a Bluetooth connection. Shades are remote controlled, and bathrooms have nice features like a lighted vanity and magnifying mirror.

The rooms also have some nods to the local culture. For example, each room has a unique photo taken by a local photographer, and the bath amenities use locally-sourced Hawaiian oils and extracts.

One unique feature caters to the workcation crowd — the business center and hospitality suite. This room offers work desks where hotel guests can post up with no reservations required. If you do need to reserve a private space, there’s also a separate, bookable meeting room that accommodates up to 24 people.

One underrated amenity is a coin-operated laundromat, which is also located on the eighth floor.

In addition to the on-property amenities, the Halepuna offers some free events and tickets. For example, guests can participate in complimentary, daily surf demonstrations held on the beach in front of Halekulani.

Halepuna guests also receive complimentary admission at the biggest museums in the state, including the Bishop Museum and Honolulu Museum of Art. Given that general adult admission costs $34 to the Bishop Museum and $25 to the Honolulu Museum of Art, that alone could go a long way in justifying the hotel room rate.

The Halepuna has two restaurants:

Halekulani Bakery: This morning spot serves coffee and pastries, and it’s most famous for its Halekulani Coconut Cake.

Umi By Vikram Garg: This seafood-centric restaurant open for breakfast and dinner is located in the hotel lobby. Each dish uses high-end and unique ingredients, such as fried rice made with seafood, bacon and koshihikari rice. Even the pancakes are elevated; the “Mai Tai Pancake” is served with caramelized pineapple and a rum-coconut essence.

Halekulani restaurants

Dining options are slim at Halepuna, but that’s where Halekulani, its sister property across the street, shines. The hotel has about a half-dozen different places to eat, and Halepuna guests can charge purchases made at Halekulani back to their room.

La Mer: The award-winning La Mer serves French cuisine with ‘flavors of Hawaii.’

Orchids: Though it’s open all day, Orchids is a great spot for Waikiki brunch in particular, as well as Waikiki afternoon tea given its ocean views and diverse menu that embraces both Asian and American cuisine.

House Without A Key: Then there’s one of the most famous restaurants in Waikiki: House Without A Key. Though it’s not fancy, it’s still an elevated spot for lunch, dinner or drinks. Don’t plan on rushing through a meal here, as the draw is enjoying the Hawaiian music and hula performances held in front of the restaurant’s century-old kiawe tree.

The food is just as good as the vibes. There’s all sorts of burgers, fish and flatbreads. The highlight, though, is found on the sunset cocktail menu: kabayaki fries. With this dish, fries are doused in the famous Japanese sauce, and then topped with furikake, garlic, onions and kewpie mayonnaise. Don’t miss it.

The Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa is an icon in Waikiki, a beachfront neighborhood in Honolulu popular amongst tourists. In fact, it was the first hotel in Waikiki Beach. Walking through the lobby of the hotel, which first opened its doors in 1901, feels like stepping into a bygone era. Much of the elegant architecture remains — and of course, so do the ocean views.

The sprawling courtyard, shaded by a massive, 100-year-old banyan tree, is a delightful spot for an afternoon mai tai as you soak up the Hawaiian sunshine. And the Moana Surfrider breakfast — held on a wraparound porch overlooking the water — is divine.

But here’s the thing — anyone can visit the bar or restaurant, whether they’re a hotel guest or not. So do the rooms make it worth staying at the hotel? Or, would you be better off staying at another hotel on an Oahu vacation and simply popping over to the Moana Surfrider for a meal or drink?

The Moana Surfrider location

The Moana Surfrider’s beachfront location is top-notch. It offers direct access to Waikiki Beach, steps away from the ocean.

The opposite side of the hotel lines Kalakaua Avenue, which is Honolulu’s main shopping street. The prime location means it’s bustling with people, both outside the hotel and on the beach.

Speaking of cars, though, you might not want a rental car in Honolulu given this hotel’s central location, proximity to public transportation and expensive parking rates. The Moana Surfrider parking fee is $65 daily for valet, which is the only option.

There’s also no free airport shuttle sadly, so you’ll have to book a shuttle or rideshare if you forgo a rental car.

Moana Surfrider rooms with an ocean view are exceptional; the best rooms offer a panorama that includes both the ocean and Diamond Head, which is a volcanic tuff cone that now stands out as one of the most iconic natural landmarks on Oahu. However, these rooms tend to cost about $200 or more per night as an upcharge for the view.

Bathrooms typically feature a tub, though it’s not an oversized tub you’d necessarily want to soak in for a long time.

Rooms also have amenities including a mini fridge and hair dryer.

The Moana Surfrider charges a $42 daily resort fee, but there are a fair amount of amenities that potentially make the resort fee feel more worth it.

The gym is good, but not amazing. Its low ceilings feel a bit cramped, but the cardio machines that face Kalakaua Avenue offer a nice view. There are dumbbells, weight machines and other small pieces of strength equipment like plyometric boxes.

Other, employee-led activities or classes vary by day but include yoga, hula dancing, lei making, a historical hotel tour and a traditional sunrise ceremony.

The resort fee also covers a few extras like a complimentary shopping tote bag and GoPro camera rental.

There’s one key amenity that’s not included in the resort fee: Moana Lani Spa. As is usually the case with resort spas, services like facials and massages come at an additional cost. The Moana Surfrider spa is unique in that it’s Waikiki’s only oceanfront spa.

The Moana Surfrider has one main restaurant serving breakfast, dinner and afternoon tea. There’s also a beach bar, a cafe, a coffee shop and a cocktail lounge.

Dining on the wraparound porch

For a fancier meal, head to the Moana Surfrider’s wraparound porch facing the water. That porch moonlights as a few different restaurants, depending on the time of day.

In the morning, it’s called the Veranda at the Moana. You can choose to dine either buffet-style or order a la carte. Menu items embrace Hawaiian flavors, including the hearty loco moco (a Hawaiian dish of rice, hamburger patty, gravy and egg) and the mango pancakes served with lilikoi curd (lilikoi is the Hawaiian word for passion fruit).

If you are committed to dining here, it can make sense to upgrade to the buffet, which offers one of the best brunches in Waikiki. It costs about $10 more than ordering entrees individually, but it entails an all-you-can-eat version of many items on the a la carte menu. Rather than decide between mochiko (local rice flour) waffles, Moana pancakes or an omelet, you might just try it all.

Moana Surfrider afternoon tea

After breakfast, the space turns into the site for afternoon tea. Prices for Moana Surfrider tea start at $73 per adult and $37 per child. There, you’ll sip on island flavors like Hawaiian coconut or passion orange guava tea. Treats include tropical sorbet.

In a breakdown of average daily room rates in May 2024 by island, Oahu shines.

One reason for Oahu’s lowest average room rate? The island also has the biggest supply. In fact, Oahu had more than double the number of hotel room nights than Maui, the next closest contender.

Even when broken down by hotel class, Oahu still has the most affordable room rates across every level, from economy and midscale to luxury options.

Midscale and economy rooms in Oahu cost $151 per night on average. That’s 30% less than the average price for the same class of room across the entire state. And if you have a penchant for the finer things in life, you’ll save on Oahu, too. In fact, you could save about $223 per night by choosing to vacation at a luxury hotel in Oahu versus Maui.

The Plumeria Lounge is one of two Hawaiian Airlines lounges at Honolulu’s Daniel K. Inouye International Airport. It’s available to Priority Pass members, as well as to select Hawaiian Airlines business and first class travelers, plus frequent fliers with Hawaiian Airlines’ Pualani Platinum elite status.

Unlike the tropical paradise you’ll find elsewhere on Oahu, this lounge is more like an oasis of beige. It has some snacks, but don’t arrive seeking a feast. If all you need is a comfy chair, a place to charge your devices and a brief escape from the pre-flight pandemonium, the Plumeria Lounge is just fine.

There are a few types of seating options, including counter seating, table seating, booths and armchairs. Most have access to power outlets. The Plumeria Lounge also has a strong, lounge-exclusive Wi-Fi network, so it should be easy to get connected before your flight.

Some people judge lounges based on the food offerings. At Honolulu’s Plumeria Lounge, the food is solidly mediocre and spare. There is a self-service buffet with complimentary light snacks.

There are also a few types of prepackaged snacks such as pretzels and gummies. Delightfully, though, there are cookie jars with Hawaiian desserts including Honolulu Cookie Company shortbread and Mele Macs macadamia nuts.

There’s a coffee maker for lattes and espresso, as well as a standard drip coffee dispenser. A soda fountain nearby offers standard soft drinks.

The alcoholic beverages are also self-serve. There are wine bottles on the counter, so you can pour yourself a glass. Or you can grab a beer from the fridge.

Purchasing a Plumeria Lounge day pass

You can purchase a day pass either as a walk-in directly upon arrival at the lounge or beforehand during check-in.

The general admission price is $40, though there are discounts for passengers with Pualani elite status. Day passes for Pualani Gold cost $30 and Pualani Platinum can purchase day passes for $25.

Though, don’t try buying a day pass if you’re flying out of Honolulu on any other airline. You must present a same-day Hawaiian Airlines boarding pass to be able to purchase a day pass.

Getting to the Plumeria Lounge inside HNL

The Plumeria Lounge is located in Terminal 1 on the third level.

Honolulu Airport has two terminals, Terminal 1 and Terminal 2. Both are connected post-security, which makes it possible to access the Plumeria Lounge even if you’re flying out of Terminal 2, but it could be a long walk. You also could take the Wiki Wiki Shuttle between the terminals.

Other HNL lounges to consider

Honolulu’s other Priority Pass Lounge is the I.A.S.S. Hawaii Lounge. It’s adorned with colorful walls, plumeria print chairs and a view of lush plants outside. It might be more aesthetically appealing, but the snacks at the I.A.S.S. lounge are almost nonexistent, so if you prioritize complimentary food, the Plumeria lounge is the better choice.

Is the Plumeria Lounge Honolulu worth it?

The Plumeria Lounge is hardly making any lists of best airport lounges. But if you received complimentary access anyway (by purchasing a premium airfare or having a Priority Pass membership), then it’s tough to complain about this lounge.

The food isn’t fancy, but few airport meals are. You’ll have a place to set down your bag. And don’t overlook the unlimited supply of coffee, soda and other drinks. The Honolulu Cookie Company shortbread treats are tasty, too.

As far as whether it’s worth purchasing a day pass, that’s a tougher decision. If you’ll otherwise purchase multiple adult beverages elsewhere in the terminal, then that might end up justifying a good chunk of the $40 day pass fee right there. If you’ve got a long layover, a delayed flight or just got to the airport way too early, then it might be easier to justify the day pass simply given how many more hours you’ll get out of your stay.

Sure, you’d much rather be lying on the beach in Waikiki. But, if you’re stranded in the Honolulu Airport, then the Plumeria Lounge has some complimentary food and drinks to help pass the time, but not much else.
