Well that went fast.
A 6,400-square-foot penthouse perched atop the iconic 56 Leonard Street — the 60-story Jenga-like tower designed by Herzog & de Meuron — was listed for sale a couple of weeks back.
And before we even got a chance to obsess over it, a buyer swooped in to claim it.
COMPASS, the agency that had the listing, reports that Penthouse 53 of the famed building has already gone into contract.
And since the asking price was a hefty (yet suited for the address) $27 million, this was the number one contract signed in Manhattan for the last week of February.
Penthouse comes with 360-degree views of Manhattan
So what makes a $27 million penthouse sell faster than hotcakes?
Well, the building, for one: the unit is one of the pricey penthouses atop Herzog & de Meuron’s cascading Tribeca tower — 56 Leonard — an architectural wonder that’s been getting people talking since news of its design broke and everyone was excited to see the unique structure complement NYC’s already impressive cityscape.
Location: towering over downtown Manhattan, the 56 Leonard building is located at the intersection of Church and Leonard streets, placing it right next to internationally acclaimed restaurants, year-round events and festivals, not to mention galleries, museums, and public art displays that make Tribeca the cultural focal point of Manhattan.
Last but not least, the penthouse itself: a massive 6,400 spread set on the 53rd floor of the tall and skinny building that is 56 Leonard, with a private (key-locked) elevator that opens up to a large living space, marked by 14-foot ceilings and walls of windows.
Wrapping around to the right of the great room is a formal dining area with breathtaking northern views all the way up to the Empire State Building.
Continuing past the dining area is an enormous chef’s kitchen, uniquely crafted by Herzog & de Meuron featuring an Absolute Black granite grand piano-shaped island and custom-sculpted fully-vented range hood.
Satin-glass etched cabinetry surrounds a modern selection of premium Miele and Sub-Zero appliances. Off the kitchen and dining areas is an unprecedented 1,000+ square foot wraparound terrace for the new owners to throw extravagant parties and ogle the staggering views north and east across the city.
There are three additional bedroom suites, each with its own luxurious en-suite bathroom and one with a private balcony. There’s also a bonus room/exercise room, as well as powder room and a fully equipped laundry room.
The lightning-fast sale was brokered by Clayton Orrigo and Stephen Ferrara of Hudson Advisory Team at Compass — the listing agents of the property.
But if you’re looking to buy into 56 Leonard and missed your chance to get your hands on this stunning penthouse, know that there are other units up for sale. Check out apartment 46E — a 4,000-square-foot unit with three terraces — that’s currently on the market for $12,500,000. Henry Hershkowitz with Compass holds the listing.
